Chapter 654 Confession
Daryl popped the question again, and Desiree could feel his desperation, which made her think about bailing.
The next day, after Desiree's fever broke, she told him she wanted to leave. Daryl froze. "You're still sick. Why do you want to go? Dr. Chapman said you need more rest."
Rufus did say that before he left yesterday.
But Desiree didn't trust him, especially seeing how chummy he was with Daryl.
So she stood her ground.
Daryl's eyes went cold. He didn't say a word, and the living room got real quiet, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
Brynn and the others kept their mouths shut.
After what felt like forever, Daryl finally spoke. He wiped his mouth with a napkin, all calm and collected. "You can't leave right now."
"Why not?" Desiree frowned.
"Have you forgotten the mess online? Until that's sorted, you're not safe. Maybe you should tell Harold to step up and shut those people up." Daryl's lips curled into a sneer.
Thinking about the rumors online, Desiree frowned harder, her fists clenching.
She had no clue where those rumors started.
Harold said he'd handle it, but days had passed, and the gossip was still going strong.
Desiree told herself to trust Harold.
She took a deep breath. "But I can't stay here. I've decided. I've been a burden for too long. I'll pack up and go home tonight. If you can, please arrange a car for me. If not, I'll manage."
She could find her own way back if she had to.
Daryl's eyes darkened as he watched her. For a moment, he thought about forcing her to stay.
But in the end, he let her go.
He arranged for a driver to take her back to the Sandvik Family.
A black Lamborghini pulled up, and Tessa came out when she heard the noise. She was surprised to see Desiree and then delighted. "Desiree, where have you been these past few days?"
"Mom," Desiree said, then turned to the driver, "You can go back now."
The driver drove off.
Tessa looked confused. "Wasn't that Harold's car? Who brought you back? Harold's been worried sick about you. He's called us so many times." She was really worried too.
At first, she thought Desiree had seen the online gossip and was hiding out somewhere. She even thought about calling the cops.
Liam stopped her, not wanting to make a bigger scene.
Desiree's face was complicated. "Let's talk about it later."
Seeing her reluctance and the sadness in her eyes, Tessa felt her heart ache, and she didn't push, quickly bringing her inside.
"Liam, Desiree is back, come down quick," Tessa shouted upstairs.
Soon, Liam came out, hands behind his back. "Why are you shouting? Do you think I can't hear?"
Tessa ignored him. She was just happy to get him downstairs. She pulled Desiree to sit and started asking about the past few days. Desiree hesitated for a moment but eventually said, "The driver who brought me back was Daryl's."
Tessa was stunned. "Didn't you say you didn't want anything to do with their family anymore? What happened?"
Desiree looked down.
Tessa sighed, wanting to ask more but not knowing how.
She had her doubts, but Liam didn't hold back.
"He said he'd treat you well after getting married, and you'd have a good life together," Liam snorted, "How long has it been, and now this happens."
"This isn't entirely Harold's fault," Desiree said.
"You're still defending him! Fine, tell us, if it's not his fault, why haven't we heard from you for two days?" Liam shot back.
Desiree was at a loss for words, her fingers twisting under the table, her mind racing.
She knew Liam and Tessa too well.
They both had fiery tempers. If she told them she was mistreated at Harold's mom's place, Tessa would be the first to confront Harold's mom.
And Liam, who had reluctantly agreed to their marriage, would insist on a divorce.
In their eyes, anyone who treated her poorly was unacceptable.
So, Desiree stayed silent.
This worried Liam and Tessa. Desiree was back, but she wouldn't say anything, leaving them clueless about what had happened.
"Fine, if you won't talk, I'll ask Harold!" Liam said, reaching for his phone.
Desiree quickly stopped him, calling Tessa to help.
They finally got the phone back, but Liam's anger remained.
"You have two options: either you talk today, or I'll call Harold." he declared.
"Liam, why are you pushing her so hard?" Tessa asked.
Liam snorted, "If I don't, she won't say anything."
No wonder it was said that the parents knew their child best.
Desiree had planned to keep silent.
But with Liam's harsh words and Tessa's persuasion, she couldn't hold out and told them everything.
After hearing the whole story, Tessa was furious and wanted to confront the Lewis family.
Liam was even angrier, slamming the table. "Call Harold right now! This marriage can't go on. It's best to divorce before the wedding, better than anything!"
Things unfolded just as Desiree had predicted, but she couldn't divorce.
Liam and Tessa couldn't understand her insistence and kept pressuring Desiree to call Harold and get a divorce.
Finally, she had no choice but to reveal the truth, "I'm pregnant, so we can't divorce."
This statement was like a thunderclap, stunning her parents.
"What did you just say? You're pregnant? Since when?" Tessa's eyes widened in disbelief.
Desiree took a deep breath.
Since she had already said it, there was no need to worry anymore.
She slowly said, "I was already pregnant before Harold and I got the marriage certificate. That's why we were in such a hurry to get married. Afraid you wouldn't accept the child, so I didn't tell you."
"You..." Liam raised his hand in anger.
