Chapter 929 How Do You Know He Is Unwilling

Ruben clenched his jaw, glaring at her, clearly wanting to push further. Just then, Lyra was pulled back.

Jeffery shot him a cold look. "Back off. You don't get to touch her."

"Jeffery!"

Ignoring him, Jeffery turned to Lyra. "You okay? Did he hurt you?"

Lyra's wrist was red, but seeing his serious face, she felt reassured. She shook her head. "No, I'm fine. With you here, he wouldn't dare."

"Let's not deal with him here. Let's go."

"Alright." Jeffery nodded, giving Ruben a final icy stare before delivering a parting shot.

"I won the bet this time. Go tell your mentor to keep his hands off Willow Creek and City A. Otherwise, I'll ruin his reputation, no matter his age."

With that, they left the corridor.

Lyra didn't see Ruben's reaction. After they left, she was a bit worried about Jeffery. "Are we completely at odds with them now? What about Dr. Adams?"

Dr. Adams had a significant reputation. Even someone like her, who focused solely on her career and avoided socializing, had heard of him. She was worried Jeffery might face trouble.

Jeffery glanced at her, the coldness in his eyes softening into warmth, as if he could read her mind. "Don't worry, there won't be any trouble. Besides, we've been at odds for a while now."

Lyra studied him carefully, and seeing that he genuinely didn't seem concerned, she felt relieved.

After Gregory's surgery, he still needed to continue medication to slow down cell division, with an observation period of several months to half a year.

Even so, he was content and deeply grateful to Lyra.

"Thank you. If it weren't for you, I might never have left the research institute." Gregory smiled at her.

Lyra was stunned for a few seconds. It was the first time she had seen Gregory smile. She had to admit, good-looking people looked even better when they smiled, especially someone as ethereal as him. She almost lost her composure.

It wasn't until Gregory coughed twice that she noticed his signal.

Before Lyra could react, Jeffery walked over with a blood test report, his face cold. "Here's the latest test report. This one shows the red blood cell count, and this one shows the regular cells. The division rate has significantly slowed compared to before the surgery."

He spoke quickly, and Lyra couldn't help but feel that Jeffery seemed unhappy.

It must be her imagination.

"That's great! If you stay in the hospital for a while longer and maintain these numbers through the observation period, Gregory, you can be officially discharged!"

Gregory glanced at Jeffery, then at Lyra, who was oblivious to Jeffery's mood beside her, and smiled faintly. "I'm afraid that's not possible."

He said with a hint of frustration, "You might not remember, but I'm the CEO of a securities company. I had to be hospitalized due to my illness. Now that I'm better, I need to return, or the company will be in chaos."

"Really? But your body hasn't fully recovered yet."

Jeffery suddenly cut in, "You can get home care, hire a reliable family doctor, and come to the hospital for regular check-ups. No need to stay here all the time."

Lyra slapped her forehead. "I totally forgot that was an option!"

She didn't think too much about why Jeffery, who usually didn't meddle in non-work matters, would suddenly get involved. She didn't realize Jeffery didn't want Gregory staying in the hospital.

After all, Lyra was the person Gregory was closest to in City A's hospital. If Gregory stayed, she'd be the one taking care of him, and Jeffery, being in Willow Creek, couldn't keep an eye on things.

Just the thought of these two spending day and night together made Jeffery's expression turn icy.

The discharge procedures were completed quickly.

By the afternoon, Gregory had packed his things and was ready to leave.

Since he was a patient she had treated and known for a while, Lyra put aside her work to see him off.

Gregory glanced at Jeffery beside him and deliberately asked, "Dr. Cole, can I have a hug?"

Lyra was taken aback.

She instinctively wanted to look at Jeffery, but held back.

He was asking her, not Jeffery. This was her decision to make. When did she start needing someone else's approval for such things?

Chiding herself internally, Lyra boldly agreed. "Sure."

She then hugged Gregory, a simple farewell gesture with no romantic undertones, and quickly let go.

But Jeffery still found it jarring. Before Lyra could step back, he reached out and pulled her away by the collar.

"Mr. Gray?" Lyra looked at him, bewildered.

Jeffery realized he might have overreacted.

Gregory, sensing the tension, gave him an out. "Mr. Gray probably doesn't want any rumors that could harm your reputation. My apologies, I didn't consider that."

Lyra was immediately convinced, waving her hands. "It's fine, really. I don't mind."

Jeffery's expression darkened again. For the first time, he felt the urge to grit his teeth at Lyra's obliviousness.

After Gregory left, Jeffery finally let go of Lyra.

"What don't you mind?"

Seeing Lyra's confusion, Jeffery repeated, "You said you didn't mind. I didn't realize my student was so broad-minded that she didn't care about her reputation."

Lyra, sensing his anger, said, "That's not what I meant."

Seeing her fearful and anxious expression, Jeffery rubbed his temples. Maybe he had been too harsh. "Forget it. You should go back. I have something to take care of."

Realizing his emotions were off, Jeffery decided to leave immediately.

However, Lyra didn't understand his thoughts.

She thought Jeffery was angry.

She wanted to chase after him, but with so many eyes in the hospital, she couldn't risk his reputation. He had never had a suitable woman by his side for years, perhaps because he didn't want to get married.

In the end, Lyra just lowered her head and sent Jeffery an apology text.

Jeffery's phone buzzed, and a message popped up.

He glanced at it, frowning, resisting the urge to reply. Just then, he received a call.

"Mr. Gray, it's me." The voice on the other end was familiar.
