Chapter 925 Career Is the Most Important

Jeffery glanced over, and without needing any further prompting, Lyra got into the car.

When it came to choosing a seat, she initially aimed for the backseat, but before she could get there, Jeffery said, "Sit in the front. It's easier."

Lyra hesitated for a moment, not wanting to seem fussy, and complied.

Although there was a saying that the front seat was reserved for girlfriends, Jeffery didn't seem like the type to care about such things, so she pretended not to know.

Once in the car, Lyra fastened her seatbelt. Suddenly, a phone appeared in front of her, and she looked up, puzzled and surprised.

Jeffery glanced at her, his hand on the steering wheel, the car still off. "I haven't checked out any restaurants yet. I'll be driving soon. You look and see what you want to eat."

Lyra took the phone.

So, Jeffery drove while she browsed through his phone.

She narrowed it down to three options, but couldn't decide due to her slight indecisiveness.

Biting her lip, Lyra asked, "Do you prefer steak, French cuisine, or pizza?"

All three had good reviews, and she didn't look at any others.

She wasn't a picky eater herself. As long as it wasn't terrible, she could eat it.

Jeffery didn't even look, his tone indifferent, "Anything's fine. Whatever you like."

Lyra tentatively suggested, "How about steak?"

"Sure, let's go with that," Jeffery replied after a long pause.

Lyra wanted to ask what he had been thinking during that silence, but she figured if he suggested something else, she might feel worse. After all, she had spent a lot of time choosing.

So she decided not to ask.

They soon arrived at the restaurant.

The restaurant was on the third floor of a mall, not a standalone place, but it was well-decorated with soothing Western music that made one feel relaxed.

When the menu arrived, Lyra's hand trembled slightly.

She hadn't noticed the prices while in the car, but now she saw that a steak cost over a hundred dollars!

She had never eaten a steak that cost more than fifty dollars!

Lyra thought it was too expensive.

Jeffery, however, smoothly placed the order, "One steak, medium-rare, and black pepper pasta. That's it."

"Sir, would you like a bottle of wine? We have a special offer, 20% off a bottle of wine with the steak."

Lyra was tempted.

Although she didn't drink, the wine in such a place shouldn't be low-quality and could make a nice gift.

In the hospital, socializing was necessary. For instance, Lyra planned to continue her studies later in the year, and she would need to find a mentor.

How could she approach a mentor without a gift?

But she was afraid it would be too expensive, so she asked the waiter, "How much is the wine?"

The waiter smiled and quoted a price she couldn't afford.

Lyra immediately dismissed the idea, "No, thank you. We have to drive, so we can't drink."

The waiter looked disappointed.

Just as he was about to take the menu to the kitchen, Jeffery spoke up, "We'll take a bottle."

The waiter was delighted. This would count towards her sales!

Lyra was a bit taken aback because she remembered that Jeffery didn't drink. "I thought you were against alcohol?"

Jeffery liked to keep a clear head and stay sober.

Back when they were at Willow Creek Serenity Health Center, Lyra had seen people try to bribe Jeffery with alcohol, but he always returned it.

Jeffery took a sip of coffee and said slowly, "You joined a new hospital. As your half-mentor, I haven't given you a congratulatory gift yet."

"A gift for me?"

Jeffery saw her surprised expression, "Don't like it? We can return it and get something else later."

He started to signal the waiter.

Lyra quickly stopped him, "No, I like it."

She didn't want to go shopping for a gift on the way home, which felt too much like a date. BesidesJeffery wouldn't buy anything cheaper than the wine.

Better to leave it.

Lyra admitted that since that day when she got hurt, she had wanted to distance herself from Jeffery. But being a bit cowardly had its advantages.

She didn't want to misunderstand again.

Jeffery looked at her for a long time. During that time, who knew what he was thinking, or maybe he wasn't thinking at all.

He said nothing, nodded, and withdrew his hand. "Alright, if there's anything else you like, let me know."

Because of his words, Lyra's heart skipped a beat.

But seeing Jeffery's calm demeanor, she settled down.

She told herself, 'Don't overthink it. Jeffery was just giving me a congratulatory gift, nothing more.'

After dinner, Jeffery drove Lyra home to rest.

Before leaving, Jeffery paused at the door and gave her his address, "I'm temporarily staying at 10 Garden Road, a friend's house."

"If you need anything in the next few days, you can come find me or call."

Lyra nodded, "Okay, I got it."

Watching him leave, her shoulders, which had been tense a moment ago, slumped, and she collapsed onto the living room sofa, exhausted.

On the table was a gift bag with that ridiculously expensive bottle of wine.

She took it out and placed it in the cabinet.

After closing the cabinet door, she patted her cheeks, "Lyra, stay clear-headed. Last time you almost made a fool of yourself. He has no interest in you, so stop overthinking."

Maybe the self-suggestion worked because Lyra didn't overthink anymore and felt at peace.

The next day, she attended Jeffery's lecture.

Mia saw her and was surprised, "I thought you wouldn't come this time either. What changed? Did something happen?"

Lyra paused slightly, a subtle movement only she noticed, "What are you talking about? I heard you guys say the lecture was useful, so I came."

"Don't forget, I'm planning to further my studies later this year. Of course, I need to listen to useful knowledge."

Saying this, she put her things down and sat.

Lyra genuinely looked like she was there to learn, different from those who were there for Jeffery's looks.

Mia was speechless, not knowing what to say, "You... really love studying? I have to hand it to you."
