Chapter 36 Going Home
'How could he say such a thing?'
Haley was struck dumb, stopped crying, and stared blankly at Oscar, completely incredulous.
This was not the Oscar she knew.
Before, Oscar was the most caring towards her, never allowing her to suffer any grievances.
Now he had changed, showing no tenderness towards her, not even consoling her.
She couldn't believe this was Oscar.
There must be a reason behind his actions.
Releasing his hand, Haley attempted a smile that wouldn't come. "How do you propose we settle this between us?"
Oscar replied, "I will cure your ears."
"I don't want that. I might as well be dead!" Haley became more agitated, grabbed a fruit knife from the side, and was about to cut her wrist.
Mae saw this and quickly restrained her. "Don't do this, Haley."
Haley, with red eyes, said, "Oscar, everything I did was for you. I love you so deeply that I'd sacrifice my life for you. You owe me, and it's impossible to settle the score!"
Later, the doctor came in, saw Haley's unstable emotions, and said to Oscar, "Mr. Brown, the patient is emotionally unstable, you can't keep upsetting her."
Oscar looked at the hysterical Haley, clenched his fists slightly, and said coldly, "Give her a sedative injection!"
Upon hearing Oscar's words, the doctor gave Haley the injection.
Haley resisted vehemently, requiring several nurses to restrain her.
Her eyes were fixed on Oscar, with a mix of love and unwillingness, murmuring, "Oscar, you wouldn't be so heartless to me. You promised to protect me forever. Your words should hold true."
Then, Haley lay quietly on the bed, her hands hanging weakly, only her eyes moving restlessly.
"Take care of her." Oscar instructed Mae and then left the room.
Outside, Oscar stood at the door of the ward for a while, took one last look at Haley through the window before leaving the hospital.
Pearl walked aimlessly, thinking about Haley's question.
If it weren't for her, could Haley have married Oscar smoothly?
In fact, Pearl already had the answer within, but couldn't help feeling sad.
Her phone rang, Pearl glanced at it, it was Oscar calling, probably checking if she had returned home.
Waiting for him at home was her duty as Oscar's wife.
She was a bit tired and didn't want to follow the rules, doing things Oscar liked.
After ignoring several consecutive calls, Oscar eventually ceased trying to reach her.
Finally, it was her mom, Kittie Harris, and dad, Evans Harris, who called.
Due to work and family reasons, Pearl had not been in touch with her family for a long time.
"Pearl." Kittie called, connected, very happy, and affectionately said, "Pearl, are you busy now? I hope I'm not interrupting your work."
Hearing Kittie's voice, Pearl's eyes filled with tears. No matter how difficult it was outside, only Kittie and Evans always cared for her.
She suppressed the urge to cry and said, "Mom, I'm not busy. Today is the weekend, I'm not working."
Kittie responded warmly, "That's good. Evans told me not to call you, but I miss you. You haven't been home for a long time, we miss you very much."
Pearl held the phone tightly."I miss you too."
Kittie then said, "Pearl, do you want to come home for dinner?"
"Okay." Pearl agreed.
It would be nice to go home.
Feel the warmth of Kittie and Evans, she realized she had missed out on much of their companionship.
After graduation, she was busy with work and had her own family.
Kittie and Evans didn't want to bother her, so they hardly called her. She was also busy with other things and neglected Kittie and Evans.
Back home, Evans opened the door for her, holding a newspaper in his hand and wearing glasses. When he saw Pearl, his usually serious face immediately lit up with a smile. "Pearl is back, come in quickly."
Pearl walked in, and Evans helped her put on slippers. "Your mom knows you're back and is making your favorite food. You must be hungry."
"Okay, I want to eat the steak Mom makes." Pearl linked arms with Evans. "I also want to eat the grilled fish Dad catches."
Evans chuckled, "You have a big appetite."
Pearl took off her coat, rolled up her sleeves, and said, "I'll go to the kitchen to help Mom."
"No need." Evans tried to stop her.
However, before she entered the kitchen, she noticed it wasn't just Kittie in there; she also saw Oscar. He had shed his expensive suit and was standing beside, washing vegetables.
Oscar noticed her arrival, turned to look at her, and said softly, "You're back."
"Pearl is back." Hearing the voice, Kittie turned around happily, wiping her hands on her apron. "Pearl, let me have a good look at you, see if you've lost weight."
Kittie came out, pulled Pearl around, and said, "You haven't lost weight. It seems Oscar is taking good care of you."
Pearl looked at Oscar, very surprised, "Mom, why is he here?"
"Pearl, didn't you ask Oscar to come see us? Oscar is good, he came even earlier than you and is helping me."
Kittie beamed with happiness; as long as Pearl was happy, she was content.
Oscar finished washing the vegetables and spoke to her, "Don't worry, Mom. As long as I'm here, I'll take good care of Pearl."
"See what a good guy Oscar is." Kittie looked at Evans. "Evans, don't you agree?"
Evans was reading the newspaper, but when he heard the conversation, he glanced over, made a perfunctory sound, then turned back to the newspaper.
Meanwhile, Pearl pursed her lips.
Kittie pulled Pearl aside and gestured towards a table filled with items.
"Pearl, all of these were bought by Oscar. He knew about my cervical spondylosis, so he got me a massage chair. And this one is for Evans. Just look at these," Kittie praised. "I've never encountered a man as considerate as Oscar. You must treasure him."
Pearl had never disclosed her feelings for Oscar to Kittie and Evans.
They were unaware of the truth and believed she and Oscar were deeply in love.
When she married into the Brown family, they all thought it was because Oscar loved her that he paid back Evans, but they never knew about David's involvement.
She didn't want them to worry, nor did she want them to feel like she was being sold. She never brought it up.
Pearl could only comply and say, "I understand, Mom."
"Is your neck hurting again recently?" Pearl asked with concern.
Kittie sighed. "As people age, they will have some ailments. I ache so much at night that I can't sleep."
Pearl gently massaged her shoulders, but Kittie said, "Pearl, don’t worry about me. You should pay more attention to Oscar. Look, he's still in the kitchen."
