Chapter 292 Not Sure Who Was Offended
Hearing it, Pearl got worried and asked, "Are you okay? Where does it hurt?"
Her eyes widened as she looked at him.
Oscar's eyes darkened, and he said hoarsely, "I feel uncomfortable."
Pearl quickly checked him over.
When she felt his hot skin and heard his heavy breathing, she realized what was going on.
Her face turned red, and she let go of him, annoyed. "Seriously? Now? Can't you control yourself?"
"It's a natural reaction. How can I control it?" Oscar said, trying to calm down.
Pearl snapped, "You think about it too much! It's always on your mind!"
Oscar looked at her and said, "If I didn't think about it, that would be a problem. If I can't get an erection with you this close, I might as well be useless!"
Pearl blushed, still not used to such blunt talk.
"Just sleep," Oscar said, pulling her close and trying to suppress his desire. "I'll manage."
Pearl lay on her side, her back against him.
She was scared he'd force himself on her, but quickly dismissed the thought. He'd never done that in all their years of marriage, out of respect to her.
Still, with Oscar holding her so tightly, she could feel his arousal.
She stayed still, too afraid to move.
Soon, Pearl fell asleep.
Being pregnant made her more tired, and she'd been having nightmares lately, affecting her sleep.
But in Oscar's arms, she felt safer and didn't have any nightmares.
Watching her sleep, Oscar felt at peace. As long as she was with him, everything was okay.
He smiled, gently rubbing her face and moving her hair from her forehead to make her more comfortable.
When Elijah and his team came in, Pearl was already asleep. Oscar put a finger to his lips, signaling them to be quiet.
They immediately shut up and tiptoed out.
Oscar watched Pearl for a bit before moving his arm and placing a pillow under her head.
Seeing she didn't wake up, he got out of bed and walked to the door of the ward.
Elijah saw him and got worried. "Oscar, why are you out of bed? You're still hurt."
Oscar clutched his chest, needing to talk. "Did you catch the people who kidnapped Pearl yesterday?"
Elijah lowered his head. "Sorry, Oscar. The roads were complicated, and they knew them better than we did. We lost them."
They had tried their best, but the area was like a maze, and the kidnappers knew it well.
Oscar, focused on saving Pearl, had noticed the kidnappers' eyes on him. "Could they be someone like Kevin?"
Elijah asked, "You mean The Crimson Eclipse Society?"
"Yeah."
Elijah hesitated. "Kevin's still in prison, right? But if they targeted Ms. Harris, did she provoke them?"
Oscar hadn't figured it out yet, but it seemed the kidnappers had been watching Pearl for a while.
"It could be a hired hit," Oscar speculated. "This isn't the first time. If they failed once and tried again so soon, Pearl must have pissed someone off."
He was using the process of elimination.
The attackers had shot at him, making it feel personal.
The only unresolved case from back then was the human trafficking case.
They were only after Pearl, who was a woman, not a child.
As a criminal gang, they'd more likely target kids, but organ trafficking was also a possibility.
After being exposed the first time, they'd be cautious and not target the same person again.
Moreover, Pearl's status wasn't one they'd typically choose.
Unless someone had hired them to harm Pearl.
"Oscar, Haley is here to see you again," someone reported. They couldn't stop her no matter what.
Haley was standing not far away. Seeing Oscar awake, she got emotional, tears welling up in her eyes.
As a public figure, she always wore sunglasses when going out, covering herself up, especially during this period when she couldn't afford any negative news.
As soon as she arrived, she took off her sunglasses, her eyes red, tears streaming down her face, looking deeply emotional.
"Oscar, are you okay?" Haley was genuinely worried. "I've been so worried about you. I'm so glad you're awake. If you hadn't woken up, I wouldn't have been able to sleep."
She was emotional, with a sense of joy at regaining something lost.
She reached out to check Oscar's injuries. "Where are you hurt? Let me see."
Oscar blocked her hand, his face pale but his eyes sharp as he stared at her, "Did you come by yesterday?"
Haley remembered Pearl's suspicions from yesterday and feared Oscar would be suspicious too. She quickly explained, "I've been feeling uneasy these days, always worried about you. I've been wanting to find you. When I heard you went out of town, I was even more anxious, afraid something would happen to you. I came for a check-up and saw Pearl here with so many people. I knew something had happened to you. I was worried all night and couldn't sleep."
Haley wasn't wearing makeup today, and it was clear she looked unwell.
She was haggard and pale.
Oscar kept staring at her and asked tentatively, "Are you involved in this?"
Haley's heart tightened. "What do you mean? I know you were shot. Are you suspecting me?"
As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, and she cried even harder. "Oscar, how could I ever hurt you? Back then, I risked everything; how could I harm you?"
She was emotional and started to choke up.
Oscar knew very well about the past but couldn't change anything. He spoke without any emotion, "I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about Pearl. The kidnappers wanted her dead too!"
Haley looked up. "Oscar, I didn't expect you to think of me this way. I wouldn't do such a thing, nor would I harm Pearl. If you suspect me, what's the point of me being alive? I might as well have died back then!"
Oscar was tired of hearing these words and didn't want to see her cry anymore.
Pearl was still sleeping inside, and he didn't want to wake her up and make her unhappy. He said coldly, "Enough. I'll find out the truth. If you have nothing else, you should go. For the sake of your reputation and the company's image, at least maintain your appearance."
Haley's sobs quieted down, but hearing Oscar's distant words felt like a needle pricking her heart.
She wanted to say something, but then she glanced back and saw someone still lying on the bed in the ward.
It was Pearl!
