Chapter 255 Do Not Take It to Heart
"Isn't she your kid?" Hathaway asked.
Alfonso shot her a cold look. "I don't even want marriage, let alone a child!"
Hathaway's face went pale. "I knew you'd say that, Alfonso. I should never have married you. I regret it. If I could do it over, I wouldn't have married you!"
Alfonso was just as harsh. "Weren't you the one who used every trick to marry me? I never wanted this."
Hathaway's heart felt like it was breaking, her eyes welling up. "Yeah, I did, and you've been punishing me ever since!"
He stayed out all night, sometimes not even coming home.
Since they got married, he never saw this place as home.
She felt like a widow.
"Revenge?" Alfonso's eyes were icy. "I never cared about you."
Hathaway's heart grew colder. What was she holding on to?
Was she hoping Alfonso would change?
No.
She just couldn't let go. The child had already grown up, and she had come to terms with everything.
But Alfonso kept hurting her.
He didn't even want to look at her. Every time he came back, it was for something specific, coming and going quickly, indifferent to everything at home.
His heart was too cold.
Since Hathaway married in, the Brown family had no place for Alfonso.
Even when David passed away, he refused to come back.
Alfonso, with a cold face, walked past her. No matter how sad or angry she was, he never looked back.
Naturally, he didn't feel sorry for her.
Just then, Haley came downstairs and saw Alfonso. She instinctively stopped and called out, "Uncle Alfonso."
Alfonso looked up at Haley, seemingly understanding everything, his face still indifferent. "This is the Brown family. If you have any issues, talk to your parents, not her!"
At such a heartless remark, Haley clenched her fists tightly. "Uncle Alfonso!"
Alfonso paused again.
"Have you never felt a hint of regret?" Haley asked.
Alfonso replied, "I've never done anything I regret!"
It wasn't just Hathaway who was heartbroken.
Haley was also instantly hurt by him. A hint of sarcasm played on her lips, and she remained silent.
And Alfonso walked away from her.
Haley looked at Hathaway, who couldn't even control her own husband. At that moment, she understood that in such a family, there would be no affection.
They were all cold-blooded. How could they sympathize with her plight?
No one could be relied upon.
She could only rely on herself.
Haley lifted her head, forcing back her tears. To cry further would show weakness.
She couldn't be weak; she had to be strong.
She couldn't lose to anyone.
Everything she did wasn't wrong, and this path had to be continued.
Haley went downstairs and looked at Hathaway, whose face was full of tears. "Aunt Hathaway, I'm going back."
Hathaway wiped away her tears and looked at Haley, still gentle. "You're leaving already? I haven't made you a cup of coffee yet. Wait for me."
Hathaway immediately went to the kitchen, still very concerned about Haley.
Watching her busy figure, she felt no gratitude.
She knew why Hathaway was so good to her, but it was too late.
When she was trapped, they hadn't helped her.
Now that she was better, she didn't care anymore.
She left without looking back.
When Hathaway came out again, Haley was gone.
At that moment, Hathaway felt completely alone.
No one would be by her side.
--
Pearl returned to the hospital.
This time, Magdalen was awake, who looked tired, lying still on the bed.
"Magdalen," Pearl said, carrying a bunch of stuff.
Magdalen turned and smiled. "Hey, Pearl."
"How are you feeling?" Pearl asked. "If you're uncomfortable, you need to tell me."
Magdalen glanced at Oscar behind her, paused, and then said, "It still hurts, but I can bear it. Don't worry, I'll be fine in a couple of days!"
Pearl nodded.
"Oscar," Magdalen looked at him, feeling guilty about what happened at the cemetery. "I'm sorry, I spoke without thinking. Don't take it to heart."
Though she was mad at Oscar, she felt she had said things she shouldn't have.
It would inevitably affect Oscar.
Oscar looked at Magdalen and said in a deep voice, "Don't dwell on it."
Magdalen sighed, her face full of sorrow. "It's hard for you too. Growing up in such an environment, no one cared about you except me and your grandfather. I couldn't take care of you, and you still had to rely on others, enduring hardships. I'm trying to stand up for you. If you weren't in our family, you would have a better life."
"It's fine now," Oscar said. "I don't feel like I've suffered. Magdalen, you need to take care of yourself."
"I know, I will get better," Magdalen said, holding Pearl and Oscar's hands. "My greatest wish is for you two to be well, to take care of the child, and to take care of Pearl."
She looked at Pearl's belly. "Before my grandchild is born, I can't rest easy. Oscar, you must ensure Pearl's safety."
Oscar held Magdalen's hand. "Don't worry."
"Don't worry too much," Pearl said with concern. "I will take good care of myself."
"I don't know why, but I always feel uneasy."Since her fall, Magdalen had been afraid, fearing something might happen to them.
"Get some more rest," Oscar said.
Magdalen nodded. Maybe she was just getting old, which made her worry all the time.
Pearl stayed with Magdalen for a while. Seeing that she was fine, she felt relieved and left the ward.
Oscar followed her out and called, "Pearl."
Pearl turned around. "What's up?"
Oscar's eyes were serious. "Don't get involved in Haley's matters."
Pearl stared at him and asked, "Are you worried about Haley, or are you worried it will affect your company?"
"There are many things you don't understand," Oscar said. "I don't want you to get hurt by getting involved."
Pearl hesitated for a moment and then said, "I'm not a child anymore. I know what I'm doing, and I will take responsibility for my decisions. The same goes for Haley."
Oscar frowned. "Pearl..."
"Pearl."At that moment, Adrian came to pick her up, interrupting their conversation.
Pearl glanced at Adrian and then said to Oscar, "I'm leaving now. Take good care of Magdalen."
Oscar's expression turned serious. "Since when did you and Adrian become so close?"
Why was Adrian picking her up?
Pearl said, "I don't have a car, and Adrian offered to give me a ride."
"What about the car I gave you?" Oscar asked.
