Chapter 332 Who Else Can I Care About
Pearl couldn't hide her excitement.
She quickly answered the phone, shouting, "Adrian!"
But the person on the other end spoke a language she didn't understand.
Pearl's smile faded. "What are you saying? Aren't you Adrian?"
The noise on the line was loud, and she couldn't make out a word.
She could only tell it was a man.
This made Pearl anxious. 'Why isn't Adrian answering?'
"Don't hang up, I'll find someone who understands you," Pearl said urgently, looking for a translator.
But how could she find one in such a short notice?
Before she could do anything, the call disconnected.
Pearl felt helpless.
She dialed again, but the phone was off.
This made her even more anxious.
She was sure Adrian didn't have the phone.
'Could he be in danger?' Pearl panicked and felt lost.
Eileen saw her distress and asked, "Pearl, what's wrong?"
Pearl looked at Eileen, unsure what to do. "Adrian is in danger."
"Adrian?" Eileen remembered. "He's been missing. Was that call about him?"
"The caller was a stranger, speaking a language I didn't understand. The phone isn't with Adrian. Doesn't that mean he's in danger?"
"Pearl, don't panic," Eileen tried to calm her. "Things aren't that bad yet. Don't think the worst until you know for sure."
"Right," Pearl said. "Things aren't that bad yet. He'll come back safely!"
But if he was in danger, what should she do?
Pearl couldn't stop worrying. Even though she told herself Adrian would return safely, she felt guilty. "I have to find him!"
Eileen stopped her. "No, if you go, what about the show? And think about the baby you're carrying!"
There were many things holding Pearl back.
She couldn't just leave, which tormented her.
She sat in her chair, her hand propped against her forehead with a sense of powerlessness.
"I don't know exactly what's going on, but staying here is the best choice. Adrian wouldn't want you to risk your life to find him!" Eileen comforted her.
Pearl understood, but she was overwhelmed with guilt.
Maybe it was because she was pregnant, and her thoughts were all over the place.
Pearl was struggling.
If she went to Eldorians, she'd just be a burden.
She had come this far and didn't want anyone else to sacrifice for her.
So she needed to stay calm.
Pearl went to the bathroom to wash her face, trying to clear her mind.
When she came out, several people were looking at her, concerned.
"I'm fine now. Let's focus on filming. That's what we should be doing!" Pearl said.
Seeing her calm down, Eileen sighed in relief but still worried Pearl was overthinking.
In their spare time, someone found news online about a female corpse with her organs removed.
"Be careful at night. Don't walk alone or go to deserted places. There's news like this again!"
"This is terrifying! How can people live like this?"
"Just be careful. The killer hasn't been caught yet!"
Such news had the whole city on edge.
Who would dare go to deserted places at night?
"How is this still happening? Feels like we're back in the dark ages. It's terrifying!"
"Girls should avoid deserted places. Even if it's not this case, there are still rape and murder cases. Better safe than sorry!"
Hearing them talk, Pearl felt uneasy.
With everything going on, she couldn't shake the feeling that some people were plotting something.
'Removing organs. Isn't that organ trafficking? Are criminals this bold now?' Pearl clenched her fists, her fear turning into intense resentment.
She couldn't help but think of The Crimson Eclipse Society.
After the night shoot, Pearl was ready to head home.
Eileen reminded her to be careful and avoid deserted places.
She walked with Emma.
When they parted ways, she walked alone.
Even though it was night, the streets were still busy.
But she felt someone was following her. Online, people said girls were only attacked in deserted places.
In such a monitored area, there shouldn't be any chance for an attack, right?
Seeing the shadow under the streetlight, Pearl felt a bit scared.
She quickened her pace to the corner.
However, the mysterious person following Pearl suddenly lost sight of her and started looking around.
Until a stick hit the one on the head.
"It's you!" Before the stick could reach, Pearl saw who it was.
She didn't expect it to be Barbara, who had tied her hair up and was wearing a baseball cap.
Barbara took off her cap and said, "You've become more vigilant."
Thinking of her identity, Pearl didn't let go of the stick and asked, "Is that female corpse case related to you? Are you following me at night with no ill intentions?"
"If I had any, you'd be dead by now," Barbara said coldly, lighting a cigarette in front of Pearl.
Just as she lit it, she saw Pearl's belly and put out the cigarette. "Sorry, I forgot you're pregnant."
"What do you want by following me?" Pearl asked with a stern face. "Is the recent case of bodies with missing organs related to you?"
"I didn't do it," Barbara told her. "I don't know about the others."
"I'm following you just to tell you not to take your anger out on Jeffery. Otherwise, his life would be too worthless!" Barbara's eyes were filled with a deep sadness.
Jeffery's life had been too hard. No matter how heartless she was, she couldn't watch his good intentions go to waste.
"Is that all you wanted to say?"
Barbara said, "Besides him, who else would I care about?"
"You like him?" Pearl asked again.
Barbara thought for a moment and then laughed. "Like? Not really. But if he dies, I'll be the only one left in this world. He's like family to me."
"What do you mean by that?" Pearl didn't understand. "Why would he die?"
"Didn't you say before that we were all locked in a dark room?" Barbara asked again. "Why don't you remember anything now?"
Speaking of which, Pearl was also confused. "I don't remember. I just dreamed about it. I feel very familiar with you and Jeffery."
Barbara laughed. "You're lucky. You weren't turned into a puppet like Jeffery and me."
Pearl saw that she had more to say.
Even though Barbara had injected her with that poison, she wanted to put it aside for now and understand some things she didn't know.
Pearl put aside her prejudice and said calmly, "Let's go back and talk."
