Chapter 87 Be careful
The car quickly left the front of the building.
Pearl watched as the car drove away, unconsciously clenching her fist.
"So the young lady wasn't lying. She does have a connection with President Oscar," the receptionist muttered uncertainly.
"He took her away in his car. Their relationship must be good. If President Oscar blames us, we'll be in trouble."
Hearing this, Pearl felt a bit dejected. She had seen Oscar's heartlessness toward women, as well as his passion for them.
It all depended on whether he liked them or not.
If he liked Haley, he would nervously bring her to the hospital to have her minor injury checked.
Likewise, he would worry about Seraphina being injured and immediately drive her to the hospital.
The receptionist also started to panic. Seeing Pearl there, she pleaded, "Pearl, if President Oscar holds us responsible, you have to explain on our behalf."
Pearl snapped out of her thoughts and said, "Today's situation was unexpected. You don't have to blame yourselves. I will go back and explain it to President Oscar."
"Okay, thank you." The receptionist felt relieved.
Pearl nodded and returned to her office.
Within ten minutes of Oscar taking Seraphina away, the whole office already knew about it.
Rumors circulated that Oscar had found a new love interest and
Seraphina happened to still be the type of woman he preferred.
Pearl found herself pondering, 'What type does Oscar like?
Haley belongs to that type, and so does Seraphina. How far am I from that type?
When can I meet his taste and get him to look at me more?'
She felt that her thoughts were too naive.
She was born with a certain personality, and that determined her character.
How long can she keep Oscar's interest if she changes her own personality?
In the end, she realized she should simply be true to herself.
After work, Pearl went to see Felix out of boredom.
She had just finished watching Evans not long ago and decided not to go since he had someone taking care of him.
However, she hadn't been to Felix's side for a few days.
As Oscar had said, Felix didn't have many people around him and was lonely. He needed someone to take care of him.
Pearl was spoiled by her grandparents when she was a child, and she was heartbroken when they passed away.
After she married into the Brown family, Charlie also loved her, and she felt cherished once again.
She seemed to be well-liked by the older generation. She also found them very kind and enjoyed talking to them.
When Pearl arrived at the ward, Felix was reading a book with reading glasses on.
She glanced at the book cover and knew he was reading a war book.
When Pearl came to see him, Felix was surprised and put down the book he was holding. He was happy and asked, "Pearl, why are you here?"
Pearl, not being very familiar with him, was somewhat reserved and said, "Oscar asked me to come and check on you, so I came."
Felix sat up, and Pearl quickly went to fetch a pillow for him.
He remarked, "He wants to be filial to me, that's his business. Why doesn't he come himself and send you instead?"
Pearl paused for a moment and replied, "He's busy, and I also wanted to come and see you."
"It's plain as day that he's making an excuse. But you're great," Felix praised Pearl, then looked outside where the weather was nice. "Let's go for a walk outside, it's too boring here."
"Okay."
Felix could now get out of bed, but he still needed a wheelchair.
Pearl helped him get dressed and placed his hat on his head, feeling reassured to let him go outside.
She pushed him out; the weather was nice, not too hot.
"Felix, I saw you reading earlier, do you usually like to read?" Pearl asked.
Felix smiled and said, "Not really, I just want to read more, to learn more! I fought on the battlefield my whole life, but I haven't experienced the stories of that generation. Now that I'm old, I miss my younger years. We were very impoverished back then, but our ancestors had it even tougher. We could still eat compressed biscuits, but they could only eat tree bark."
When Felix talked about these things, he could empathize.
Having been through so many wars, he knew how hard-won the present days were.
The country needed to be strong, so people wouldn't be bullied. They had to protect this hard-earned homeland.
Pearl hadn't experienced the cruelty of that era, but she could still understand that Felix's most glorious moments were when he was young. Even in his old age, he still wanted to do more for the country.
Felix's eyes turned red as he talked.
Pearl listened carefully and saw the scars left on his leg from being shot, which made her understand their hardships.
"Felix, now that the country is strong and there are many talented individuals, there won't be a war," Pearl comforted him.
Felix said, "We shouldn't be too proud."
Suddenly, he thought of something and said with a smile, "There are indeed many talented individuals. Oscar is one of them. He achieved great things at a young age. It's all Charlie's fault for making him go back home to inherit the family business. If he had stayed with me, he would have been even more formidable than I was when I was young."
This statement shocked Pearl.
Oscar, when he was young, would have been around her age. It was during
that time that she first met Oscar.
Could he be on a mission?
Felix continued, "Pearl, I'm telling you this because I consider you a close friend, but please don't tell anyone else about this."
Pearl nodded and simply replied, "Alright."
Oscar had mentioned that their families didn't interact to avoid suspicion.
Felix said, "You can't talk about what happened between Oscar and me before."
Pearl then escorted Felix outside and wrapped him in a blanket. The breeze outside was gentle and balmy, and Felix seemed to be enjoying it. She had learned that Felix had a sweet tooth, but with age, he indulged less frequently. When she inquired about it once, he simply shrugged and remarked that enjoying them occasionally wasn't a big deal.
Upon noticing the candy in the child's hand, Felix felt a sudden temptation. Seeing this, Pearl stepped outside to purchase a lollipop for him. Opting for a relatively small one, she reasoned that it would be easier for elderly individuals like Felix to bite into.
Felix was even happier now. He took the lollipop from Pearl's hand and smiled, saying, "Pearl, we have only known each other for a short time, and you already know that I love sweets. You are like my own granddaughter!"
Pearl reminded him, "You can occasionally have one lollipop, but for this month, you can't have it anymore."
"Okay, I understand."
Felix was satisfied to be able to have this lollipop.
Seeing Felix satisfied, Pearl also smiled. She enjoyed being with him.
However, she saw Oscar rushing in a hurry.
Is he ready to leave the hospital?
At the same time, Pearl didn't see Seraphina. Could Seraphina be seriously injured?
Pearl looked in the direction he was going and frowned. That was the obstetrics and gynecology department. Seraphina had only bumped her head; it wasn't that serious. At most, she would be in the orthopedics department.
How could she end up in the gynecology department?
Felix also noticed Oscar's figure, but he didn't ask much and only said, "Pearl, Oscar just left the hospital. You're not going with him? Is he going to see someone?"
Felix sensed that something was wrong and reminded her, "He left from the obstetrics and gynecology department, so be careful."
