Chapter 275 Do Me a Favor
They were not the only reporters there.
With the internet booming, journalists race to break news first. Whoever's first and most accurate gets the best viewership.
A runway show isn't huge news, but it's live.
Everyone wants that initial traffic.
Models were already on stage, and several celebrities were in the audience. Pearl was hunting for the best photo angles.
"Ms. Harris."
She turned and saw Eileen behind her. It was mostly staff around, with celebrities inside. "Ms. Collins, what are you doing here?"
Eileen smiled, "Just call me Eileen."
Pearl liked her. "What are you doing here? Go inside; it's all staff here, and you'll get blocked by photographers!"
She knew how wild reporters could get.
Running out like this, Eileen's safety wasn't guaranteed.
Eileen didn't mind. Seeing the reporters focused on other celebs, she smiled, "They don't notice me."
Pearl saw they were either shooting the stage or some well-known female artists.
She realized Eileen wasn't as popular as before.
Pearl didn't want to hurt her feelings. "But you're still very beautiful. We'll take some photos of you later."
"Alright, thank you," Eileen said, smiling.
Her assistant chimed in, "Eileen's popularity dropped after she played a supporting role for Haley. She hasn't gotten good roles since. She won't take bad roles, so she's been on hold."
Her assistant was more worried than Eileen, fearing she'd be forgotten.
Eileen, still smiling, and asked, "Are you a reporter now? I remember you were with Mr. Brown. Did you change jobs?"
"Yes," Pearl replied.
"Make way, make way, Haley is coming through!"
Haley emerged from backstage, as glamorous as ever.
She always kept a high profile, even with fluctuating popularity. She made sure to show off, especially at big events, to remind everyone she's a rising star.
Eileen's assistant couldn't stand it, but Eileen stepped aside.
Haley had been in the spotlight recently, even with negative news, which reporters loved.
Being controversial was better than being ignored.
Pearl watched Haley, surrounded by people, with some fervently taking pictures.
Haley tried to cover up but managed her expressions well. Even when avoiding cameras, she did it beautifully.
"Haley, look this way!"
A photographer from a well-known magazine called out.
Haley, knowing it was a famous magazine, glanced up.
Even a glance, captured by a pro, looked good.
As long as she had attention, she could stay relevant.
Pearl watched and thought Haley's resilience was impressive. Even if her facade cracked, she'd find a way to rise again.
While Haley thrived on controversy, Eileen stayed aloof, refusing bad roles.
In today's entertainment industry, it was tough to make a name. Newcomers popped up fast, and the old ones were quickly forgotten.
Some people got famous with one show, but without another hit, they fell from the top.
The competition was brutal. Even though Pearl wasn't in the industry, she saw the harsh reality.
Even if someone took bad roles and their reputation suffered, as long as they got attention, they were still a hot commodity.
"You're a great actress. Your acting is excellent, and you don't follow the crowd. It's rare to see that," Pearl told Eileen. "You'll definitely have your day."
Eileen smiled, happy with the praise. "Thanks for the encouragement. I'll keep working hard."
She handed Pearl a business card. "Even though I'm not as famous as before, if you need help, I'm here."
Despite seeming aloof, Eileen was easy to get along with. Pearl accepted the card.
"Madam."
Harold suddenly approached Pearl.
She was surprised to see him and felt more at ease since Oscar wasn't around. "Why are you here?"
Harold held a bag. "Mr. Brown was worried you were working too hard, so he asked me to bring this."
He took out several bottles of hot milk and handed one to Pearl. "Mr. Brown said this is your favorite."
Pearl looked at the bag full of sweet milk and pursed her lips slightly.
Eileen noticed but didn't comment. "Ms. Harris, I'm heading inside. Look for me later if you want photos."
Eileen and her assistant walked away.
Pearl looked at Harold. "I'm working."
"Mr. Brown knows you're serious about work, but he also said you tend to forget things when you're busy. He said you shouldn't forget to rest, especially for the sake of the baby," Harold reminded her.
Pearl instinctively touched her belly. Not wanting him to interfere, she took the milk from Harold. "I'll drink it."
Haley saw this scene.
She had noticed Pearl earlier but pretended not to because of the cameras.
Seeing Harold take care of Pearl and hand her milk, it was clear it was Oscar's idea.
Oscar always cared about Pearl!
Haley clenched her hand, feeling unbalanced. She thought, 'Why does Pearl get all the good things?'
But when she saw the milk brand, it looked familiar.
In high school, Oscar had prepared this brand of milk.
Oscar didn't like drinking milk. Was this a coincidence?
Haley's grip tightened. Seeing Pearl touch her belly, she almost forgot: Pearl was pregnant, and the baby was likely Oscar's!
Haley's gaze turned cold. She couldn't let this baby be born.
If she couldn't have it, Pearl shouldn't either.
With many cameras around, Haley, who loved the spotlight, surprisingly left and went to the lounge.
The lounge was empty. Haley sat for a long time before dialing a number saved without a name. "I need you to help me with something!"
