Chapter 139: You don't have ten million dollars
"Besides you, Pearl has nowhere to go," Oscar's voice revealed a firmness, even a hint of indifference.
Pearl suddenly sat up. She realized it was already dawn.
Janetta's sarcasm could be heard clearly. "Oscar, don't you think what you're saying is ridiculous?"
It wasn't a dream. Oscar was here.
Pearl got out of bed and walked out of the room to see Oscar and Janetta facing off against each other in the living room. Oscar was wearing a smoke-gray shirt today. Janetta was half a head shorter than Oscar.
"Oscar, if you came here to give me what I want, then I'll go with you," Pearl said, pursing her lips as she walked towards Oscar.
Oscar and Janetta both looked at Pearl at the same time.
Oscar saw the pajamas on Pearl. They had a cartoon pattern on them.
Oscar fell silent all of a sudden.
Pearl watched Oscar watching her, never having worn this type of clothing before.
Coupled with Pearl's long hair naturally falling on both sides of her shoulders and her makeup-free face, her face exuded a relaxed aura, but her eyes were as cold as ice.
Oscar walked towards Pearl. "Go change your clothes. I brought you breakfast. After you and Janetta finish breakfast, you'll come home with me."
Oscar's voice was particularly gentle when he spoke, but Pearl knew that Oscar was insisting on getting his way.
"Okay."
With Janetta present, Pearl didn't want to be laughed at by Janetta.
Janetta also knew Pearl well, and couldn't stop her from leaving.
Pearl drank some milk and ate half a fried egg and a few spoonfuls of oatmeal.
As Oscar was about to walk toward Pearl, he suddenly asked, "Has the venue for Ms. Clark's art exhibition been confirmed?"
Janetta didn't expect Oscar to suddenly ask her this.
Out of politeness, Janetta replied, "We're still in discussions with the exhibition staff."
Oscar took Pearl in his arms. "I haven't heard you mention it. I'll have Harold talk to the person in charge later. Those people over there are old friends of mine."
"I forgot about it." Pearl was a bit nervous. She didn't expect Oscar to subtly threaten her with Janetta's affairs here.
On the surface, Pearl could only respond to Oscar in this way.
Waving goodbye to Janetta, Pearl and Oscar went downstairs and got into the car one after the other.
Before Pearl could speak, Oscar took her hand and gently rubbed the back of it with his fingertips. "We're going to Serenity Haven Estates now. If you're not satisfied with the arrangement there, you can tell me, and I'll have Harold find someone to make changes immediately.
"You can do what you like, there's no need to hide anymore."
Oscar's tone was really gentle now.
Pearl felt like crying. If it weren't for Haley, if Pearl hadn't heard Magdalen ask Oscar that question, if Oscar hadn't admitted it himself…
If Pearl hadn't lived with Oscar for these three years, she would have been immersed in his gentle affection.
Suppressing the discomfort in her heart, Pearl said, "I understand the implications of your words. Oscar, if you don't terminate the agreement by the deadline, what do you want to do? Don't tell me you've fallen in love with me."
With that last sentence, a sarcastic smile played on Pearl's lips.
Oscar wouldn't terminate the agreement; he could have a thousand reasons, but it definitely wasn't because he didn't want to let Pearl go out of love.
"Pearl, you're good. We don't need to go that far for now." Oscar held Pearl's hand and didn't let go. He said, "I didn't see you eat much just now. Are you still not feeling well? If your stomach is still bothering you, I'll take you to see a doctor."
Oscar could be gentle or tough, but he never mentioned divorce.
Pearl wanted to pull her hand away, but Oscar held on tighter. "Pearl, don't make a scene."
Pearl felt even more uncomfortable. "How is this making a scene? If you and Hathaway think alike, I can give you back the ten million."
"You can't truly have ten million dollars, Pearl?" Oscar didn't believe Pearl.
At that moment, the car was moving slowly.
The doors were locked and couldn't be opened.
"I don't have it, but I can earn it," Pearl said.
Oscar chuckled and said, "And how do you plan to earn it? If you leave the Brown Group, who do you think will accept you? How much do you plan on paying me back each month?"
Before Pearl could say anything, Oscar continued. "How long do you plan to take to repay this ten million?"
Pearl fell silent. She hadn't thought about it that much yet.
But now that Oscar had asked, Pearl decided that she could do part-time jobs, borrow money from Janetta, and work as a model or a translator.
She would repay the minimum amount every month.
Suddenly, Oscar spoke into her ear, his words tinged with a smile. "Pearl, you're oversimplifying things. Think about it: earning ten million dollars, without seeking help from anyone? If you find a job now, even if you earn fifteen thousand dollars a month, you still have to cover your daily expenses. Ten thousand dollars a month, a hundred and twenty thousand dollars a year, how long will it take you to repay ten million dollars?"
Just as Pearl was about to say something, Oscar preempted her. "And that's without considering interest. Why bring this up when I haven't mentioned divorce?
"What can that guy Magee give you? Would being with him be better than being Mrs. Brown?"
What Magee gave Pearl was the light of youth.
He had been the most important person in her life.
Oscar had forgotten, and who knew if he would ever remember.
Since Oscar mistook Magee for someone else, she would let him misunderstand the situation forever.
Pearl chuckled lightly, "What he brought me is the same as what Haley brought you."
"Pearl, I don't want to be a divorcee for now." Oscar took a deep breath, restraining his anger.
Pearl remained calm. "Then I'll have to go through the legal process."
"Do you think anyone in the whole of Willow Creek would dare to take on this divorce case?" Oscar didn't take Pearl's words seriously.
Oscar was very famous in Willow Creek and had a significant influence in the business community.
Anyone who dared to take on Oscar's divorce case in Willow Creek would be looking for trouble!
Pearl felt very uncomfortable. Did she really have to divorce Oscar, and could she only do it the way Janetta suggested?
At that moment, Oscar's phone rang. It was Magdalen.
She said frantically, "I'm hosting a masquerade ball at Dreamscape Retreats tonight. Bring Pearl over and don't tell me you have other plans. I won't accept any excuses. If I don't see the two of you, you'll pay for it!"
After saying that, Magdalen hung up.
Oscar said, "You heard that. We can't disappoint Magdalen."
Pearl felt uneasy. She could continue to be obedient, but what about Oscar?
