Chapter 359 Because He Was Afraid
Pearl turned to look at her.
Haley's eyes sparkled with pride, her lips curling into a nasty smile. "You won't make it; no one can save you. This is your fate. I'm the winner. I live a bright life, while you'll just end up in the dirt."
She laughed even louder.
Pearl had never seen her laugh so crazily before.
Haley's harsh words still made Pearl's face change and her heart race a bit.
And at that moment, Oscar, grim-faced, approached with his men.
"Oscar." Haley stopped laughing when she saw him, switching to a weak act, tears in her eyes. "Oscar, are you here to save me?"
Pearl turned to look at him.
Oscar went straight to Pearl, not even glancing at Haley. He took Pearl's hand, concern in his eyes. "Didn't I tell you to stay in the car? Why did you come out? Are you okay?"
Pearl shook her head. "I just needed some fresh air."
She looked at Haley and asked, "What are you going to do with her?"
Only then did Oscar look at Haley.
Haley yelled, "Oscar, they don't respect me at all. I saved you, and they still treat me like this."
Oscar's eyes were cold. "Follow the procedure."
Haley's face changed. "Why? What did I do wrong, Oscar? Have you forgotten how I saved you?"
Oscar stared at her coldly. "If I didn't do this, how would you have brought me to see Kevin?"
Haley was stunned, feeling utterly hopeless.
Her eyes filled with tears. "Is everything a lie? You pretended to be nice to me just to get to Kevin! It's all for Pearl!"
She almost shouted.
Her love was crushed.
Oscar said, "You're right, I did it to find a cure for Pearl."
"How can you treat me like this!" Haley accused. "I loved you, sacrificed so much, even risked everything to bring you to Kevin, and you destroyed everything. My father's life is uncertain, Oscar, how can you be so heartless."
Oscar was used to Haley's ways. In her world, she was never wrong; everyone else was.
Oscar's eyes were cold. "If you hadn't done these things, it wouldn't have come to this."
"Is what Kevin did right?"
"Don't forget what you and Kevin are. If not today, some day it would still end like this!" Oscar continued. "I showed you leniency for your parents' sake. You didn't cherish it and walked into this dead end!"
At first, his feelings for her were partly because she had saved him.
Another part was because Hathaway was her mother.
And his identity had swapped with Haley's.
Putting aside the grudges of the previous generation, he indeed owed her.
He also tried hard to repay her, but he knew her initial act of saving him was also to use him to escape her other identity.
With that, Haley felt as if her heart had died, her passionate heart plunged into icy water.
She had lost once since birth, abandoned by her parents and given to Kevin.
But she still foolishly believed in love again.
It was mainly because the dream Oscar gave her was too sweet. She thought she could be loved, but she was wrong.
Oscar still didn't love her.
Tears streamed down Haley's face as she asked, "You risked your life for me—was that just a lie? You went through all that, even putting yourself in danger."
No one would risk their life for a play.
Even Kevin was deceived by Oscar.
Kevin thought Oscar was poisoned, disregarding life and death, believing Oscar would stand by her side.
Oscar glanced at Pearl, not wanting her to know everything, and didn't answer Haley's question. "Take her away."
Haley started laughing again, tears streaming down her face.
But she still couldn't hate Oscar because she truly loved him.
When she left The Crimson Eclipse Society, she did want to use Oscar to escape her identity.
But back then, Oscar was genuinely good to her with kindness she had never experienced.
So even now, she couldn't hate him, only obsess over him. She wanted to marry Oscar.
She wanted to succeed and then marry him, to be a woman worthy of Oscar.
This time, Haley didn't struggle. She was helped into the car.
The door closed, severing her feelings for Oscar.
She thought, 'Why couldn't the dream last a bit longer?'
Even if it was a dream, it shouldn't have ended so quickly.
She still hated Pearl for being between them.
If Pearl hadn't gone abroad, everything wouldn't be like this.
She and Oscar could have been in love, but because Pearl married him, everything changed.
It was Pearl's fault, and the Brown family's fault!
"Let's go. Stop looking," Oscar reminded. "Get in the car, we're going home."
Pearl watched Haley's car leave, then asked, "What did she mean by saying you risked your life for her? What did you do?"
Oscar's face remained calm, and he didn't answer immediately.
But Pearl's eyes were on him, waiting for an answer.
Her heart, which had just calmed, started racing with worry again.
Then Oscar spoke, "At Donald's place, I had to choose between two options. I chose Haley, but in the end, Donald didn't let her go. I risked my life for her, that's what she meant."
"Is that all?" Pearl was skeptical, but what he said wasn't wrong. It could be considered risking his life for Haley.
"Yes," Oscar replied softly. "What else do you think?"
Pearl still felt uneasy, but Oscar smiled and touched her face.
"Don't overthink it, it's not that complicated," he tried to comfort her.
But as soon as Oscar touched her face, Pearl quickly slapped his hand away. "Don't touch me, we're divorced, you're crossing the line!"
Oscar's eyes showed helplessness. "Pearl, I'm sorry."
"What's the use of sorry? You broke my heart!" Pearl complained, turning away.
Oscar said again, "I had no other choice. I couldn't just watch you die!"
He wasn't invincible.
Facing death, he was powerless and had to bow his head because he was afraid Pearl would die in front of him.
