Chapter 678 He Couldn't Renounce Us
"I totally get where you're coming from. We can't let Harold keep being so stubborn. But you gotta think about your health too. If you get too worked up and something happens, our whole family could fall apart," Wesley said, trying to calm her down.
They'd been through so much together to get to this point. The last thing he wanted was for Ember to get sick because of Harold's antics.
Ember was about to say something when a lightbulb went off in her head.
She quickly pulled Wesley to sit down. "I just thought of a plan. Harold doesn't want to see us now, but if I get sick and end up in the ICU, do you think he'd still ignore me?"
"You can't mess around with your health like that," Wesley immediately objected.
He thought to himself, 'The ICU is for people who are really sick. Ember has to pretend to be sick and get admitted to the ICU just to trick Harold into coming back; that's absolutely out of the question.'
Ember slapped her thigh in frustration. "Come on, you're not thinking straight. Do you really have to be sick to get into the ICU? With enough money, we can get in anywhere."
She just wanted to use the ICU as a ruse to get their son back and push him towards Isolde. It was all just an act.
"My brain's never been as sharp as yours, even when I was younger. Now that I'm older, I'm even slower," Wesley said with a self-deprecating laugh. "But I think your plan could work. Harold's a good kid. No matter how much he loves Desiree, he can't ignore us."
Ember felt a pang in her heart.
They only had one child, Harold. They'd poured all their love and money into raising him.
How could he renounce his parents?
Even if Desiree tried to sway him, it wouldn't work. And now that Desiree was out of the picture, they had to seize this chance to break them up for good.
"Let's call Hermione. They've been friends since they were kids. Harold might listen to her," Ember suggested.
Early the next morning, Hermione Lewis took leave from her university in the neighboring state and came over. As soon as she walked in, Ember shoved some money into her hand.
"Ember, what are you doing?" Hermione was startled and tried to give the money back. "This is too much, I can't take it."
"Yes, you can. It's just a token of our appreciation. Take it," Ember insisted, pushing the money into her hand. "We just need your help with something."
At first, Hermione didn't want to get involved in Harold's marriage and kept refusing. "If Harold wasn't married, it would be different. But he's already married. I can't convince him to get a divorce."
Then she saw the photo. With Wesley and Ember egging her on, her eyes filled with anger. "So what if she's a Sandvik? Harold's such a good guy. How could she treat him like this?"
Hermione cursed inwardly, 'Cheating in a marriage is disgusting, no matter who does it.'
If Desiree didn't care about Harold, she shouldn't have married him in the first place. Why put him through all this pain?
"Don't worry, I'll help you break them up and get Harold to see the light," Hermione promised.
"With you on our side, I feel so much better," Ember said, her smile widening.
She couldn't understand why Desiree was making Harold suffer.
But Desiree was a Sandvik, spoiled since birth. Ember wanted to see how long she'd hold on against all this pressure and if she'd still cling to the Lewis family.
Meanwhile, on Desiree's end...
She felt wronged but didn't want to go back home.
She had defied Liam and Tessa's wishes to marry Harold. She hadn't forgotten the things she said to them.
But she didn't expect them to drive over and follow her to the hotel.
Hearing a knock on the door, Desiree thought it was her food delivery. But when she opened it, there stood Liam, Tessa, and Daryl.
Desiree asked, "What are you guys doing here?"
"If we didn't come, we wouldn't know how much you've been suffering with Harold!" Tessa said, her eyes filling with tears. "Desiree, you've lost weight."
With just that simple sentence, Desiree's tears started to flow.
Since leaving home, she hadn't been eating or sleeping well. She often woke up from nightmares, feeling like someone was calling her 'Mom.'
But there was nothing around her.
She knew it all stemmed from her obsession with that child.
She thought to herself, 'People cope with the loss of a child in different ways. Some may find it easier to move on, while others may struggle with the pain for a long time. The quiet of the night can often intensify these feelings.'
"Alright, let's go inside and talk. Don't stand in the hallway for everyone to see," Liam said as he walked in.
Desiree quickly stepped aside.
Even though she didn't want to see Daryl right now, he was already here with Liam and Tessa. She couldn't just kick him out.
Once inside, Liam started scolding her, "We told you to find someone of equal status, not a poor guy, but you wouldn't listen. Now look what happened? Your mom and I aren't even dead yet, and Harold isn't the richest man in the country, but he's already abandoned you!"
Desiree kept her mouth shut, saying nothing.
Liam was right. She had been so confident in front of them, betting that she hadn't misjudged Harold, but reality had proven her wrong.
Tessa gently tugged on Liam's sleeve and gave him a look. "Don't bring that up anymore. Everyone meets a few jerks when they're young. Just find a good person in the future."
Desiree was stunned.
She thought, 'Does Mom mean to find me a new husband?'
She glanced at Daryl standing nearby and immediately understood everything.
"Desiree, your dad and I think Daryl is great. He's genuinely good to you, and our families are well-matched. A girl shouldn't marry down. Isn't he better than Harold?" Tessa directly stated her intentions.
