Chapter 737 Miscarriage
"Hey, have you tried hitting up Pearl? She lives super close now, so she'd definitely know if something went down," Jimena suggested, trying to be helpful.
Louis thought about calling but checked the time and did some quick math in his head.
It was already nighttime where Pearl was, and she was probably asleep. Calling now would definitely wake her up.
"Let's leave it for tonight. It's too late. I'll call her tomorrow around noon. You should get some rest; I'll crash in the study tonight," Louis said, giving Jimena a kiss on the cheek.
His desk was buried under a mountain of documents that had to be done tonight.
By the time he finished, it would probably be the early hours of the morning. Since Jimena's sleep had gotten lighter during her pregnancy, any noise he made getting into bed would wake her up.
It was better for Louis to sleep in the study tonight to avoid disturbing Jimena.
"When are you planning to take a break tonight? You've got that big meeting tomorrow. Can't this work wait until then?" Jimena asked, looking worried.
Louis was concerned about disturbing her rest, but deep down, she felt the same way.
Louis shook his head. There was no point in hiding anything, so he handed her the documents. "Yesterday's earthquake in the southern city caused a lot of casualties and left many homeless. The meetings are about that. If I don't finish these documents tonight, tomorrow's meeting can't happen," he said.
Even though, in his position, no one would mind if he delayed things by a day, Louis couldn't get past his own conscience.
He couldn't stand the thought of people suffering while he slept soundly. Every time he closed his eyes, he thought of their plight, which was heartbreaking.
Seeing this, Jimena understood and said, "Then go ahead and work. I'll head back. Don't forget to drink the soup."
She didn't want to waste any more of Louis's time, so she didn't say much more.
A few words wouldn't help; it was better to let him finish his work sooner and get some sleep.
Back in her room, Jimena sat on the soft bed, unable to sleep.
She decided to help with other tasks so that Louis could rest after his meeting tomorrow.
That night, both of them stayed up late, only falling asleep near dawn.
Louis had only gotten a few hours of sleep before heading to his meeting, while Jimena slept a bit longer and woke up to find it was already past ten in the morning, with Louis still in his meeting.
Jimena quickly freshened up, tied her hair into a neat ponytail, and sat at her vanity to continue working until noon.
When she stood up, a wave of dizziness hit her. She managed to grab the edge of the table to avoid falling.
At first, Jimena thought she just needed a moment to recover, but the dizziness grew stronger, and she eventually collapsed.
When she woke up, she found herself in a hospital room with Louis sitting beside her, his eyes red and puffy."I'm okay," Jimena said, trying to reassure him with a forced smile. "I probably just had low blood sugar from not eating all morning. Really, I'm fine. You should go rest."
"Jimena," Louis said, his voice hoarse and filled with pain. Why did this have to happen to them?
They had been so excited for their baby's arrival, preparing clothes and even picking out names.
But fate seemed to be playing a cruel joke on them.
"I'm really fine. Don't look at me like that. It makes me sad," Jimena said, trying to comfort Louis.
The more she tried to reassure him, the more it hurt Louis.
His gaze moved from her face down to her now-flatter stomach.
He didn't know if he should tell her the truth.
If he did, how could she bear such a heavy blow? But if he didn't, she would eventually find out.
Words failed him, and Louis couldn't bring himself to speak.
"Louis, don't look at me like that. I'm in good shape; there shouldn't be any problems," Jimena said, unable to help following his gaze.
One look was all it took for Jimena to be stunned.
Just one look, and Jimena was completely stunned.
She trembled as she lifted her hand, placing it on her belly, feeling it up and down. "Where's my baby? This can't be happening. Louis, where's our child?" Jimena kept asking, her voice growing more desperate.
Louis wrapped her in a tight embrace, whispering comforting words in her ear. "We'll have more children in the future, many sweet little ones."
"Why? What did I do wrong to deserve this?" Jimena sobbed, tears flowing down her cheeks.
Since becoming pregnant, she had been extremely careful, steering clear of anything that could potentially harm the baby.
Yet despite all her precautions, she couldn't hold onto the baby.
Was it simply not meant to be?
"You did nothing wrong. It's not your fault. It was just an accident," Louis said, his heart aching even more.
A deep sense of guilt washed over him.
If he had paid more attention to Jimena, would this have happened?
"Why did this accident happen to me?" Jimena asked, tears flowing down her cheeks.
She truly couldn't understand. They hadn't done anything wrong; on the contrary, they had always tried their best to help others, donating to displaced orphans and even building free schools for them.
She had shown so much kindness to other people's children.
Yet in the end, she couldn't keep her own.
"Jimena, can we please not think about this anymore?" Louis said, his voice filled with deep pleading.
The pain of losing their child weighed heavily on him, just as much as it did on Jimena. Yet amidst his sorrow, he forced himself to stay strong and comfort her.
He had already lost a child; he couldn't bear to lose his wife as well.
Yet Jimena shook her head, saying, "Can you really stop thinking about it? I can't. Every time I think of our baby, I just want to cry. He never even got to see the world."
Hearing this, Louis held her close, his heart breaking for both of them.
