Chapter 812 Still Alive?
"Did you see Azalea just now?" Saskia grabbed Nathaniel's arm, her voice shaky. "I need to go back and check. The fire was massive. What if she didn't make it out?"
Just the thought made Saskia feel like she couldn't breathe.
Azalea had died in a fire.
What if Azalea was still alive but died again because of Saskia's negligence? How could Saskia ever forgive herself?
"Saskia, don't go back. The police have already sealed off the area," Nathaniel said, trying to hold her back.
"But what if that was Azalea..." Saskia's voice was desperate.
"You said it yourself, you're not sure if it was her. Why risk your life for a possibility? Have you thought about what would happen to Benjamin if something happened to you?" Nathaniel's tone was firm.
He had another thought he didn't voice: What would happen to him if something were to happen to her?
Saskia stared at him, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Nathaniel pulled her into a comforting embrace. "I'll have my assistant look into it. Let's go home first."
Hearing him mention home, Saskia felt a flicker of warmth despite her earlier resistance.
"Okay," she replied softly.
What Saskia didn't know was that a van was parked not far from the mansion.
Inside the van, a woman in a black dress with long curly hair sat, her face cold and aloof like a rose blooming in the night.
If Saskia were here, she would be shocked.
Because this woman was Azalea, the one she had been thinking about.
But Azalea had changed drastically.
"You deliberately let them go," Ken sneered from the driver's seat.
Azalea was startled and denied it. "I didn't!"
Ken said, "Don't pretend. I saw it. Who would've thought that after dying once, you'd still care about your sister? Is this what they call blood ties?"
Azalea replied, "I really didn't."
Ken laughed, not caring about her denial. "Say what you want, but the fact is you didn't complete the task I gave you. No antidote for you this month."
"You can't do this! You promised!" Azalea's eyes widened in panic, and she grabbed Ken's arm.
Yet, Ken remained unmoved. "I promised you the antidote if you completed the task. Did you complete it?"
Azalea glared at Ken, her intense hatred nearly clouding her judgment.
But the last bit of reason told her she couldn't fight back.
At least not now.
Ken watched her struggle through the rearview mirror, a satisfied smirk on his lips.
"Smart choice. Remember who holds your life in their hands now," he said.
He paused, his voice turning harsh. "No second chances."
Azalea's eyelashes trembled. "I understand," she replied.
The van drove away so quietly that it felt as if it had never been there at all.
Azalea stared out the window at the passing scenery, her heart aching as she thought of Saskia.
She had to find a way to tell Saskia.
The investigation into the mansion fire went on for days without any leads.
There was only one suspect.
A cleaner who had escaped that day said they saw a woman in a black dress with a faint smell of gasoline.
Upon hearing this, Saskia went to find the cleaner.
"Are you sure you saw a woman in a black dress that day?" she asked.
The cleaner nodded.
Saskia felt as if all her strength had been sapped, her heart aching yet oddly relieved.
The good news was that Azalea was likely still alive.
The bad news was not knowing why she did it.
Nathaniel soon noticed that.
But he chose not to ask directly."Mom, you haven't seemed happy these past few days. Did I do something to upset you?" Benjamin's voice pulled Saskia out of her daze as she sat beside him, lost in thought.
Saskia quickly reassured him. "No, sweetie, you didn't do anything wrong. Why would you think that?"
Benjamin hugged her, trying to comfort her. "But Mom, you don't seem as happy as before. What's going on?"
"Sometimes adults have a lot on their minds," Saskia said, looking at Benjamin's innocent face. She didn't know how to explain, so she kept it simple.
Benjamin seemed to understand a little, but he was already trying to comfort her by holding her hand. He said, "I hope you won't be sad, Mom. I'll share half of my happiness with you."
Saskia couldn't help but smile, her mood lifting significantly.
She played with Benjamin for a while before he dashed off on his own.
Thinking Benjamin might be restless but wouldn't go far, Saskia didn't worry.
Benjamin had actually run to the bedroom door.
"Mr. Egan, I did what you said, but Mom won't tell me anything. What should I do?" Benjamin hugged Nathaniel's neck, a bit frustrated.
Nathaniel tapped his nose. "That's good enough. Making your mom happy is the best thing."
Hearing this, Benjamin smiled again.
But a child's happiness was different from an adult's.
Saskia didn't immediately feel better from this simple comfort, and Nathaniel became worried because of her anxiety.
Until one day, Saskia received an anonymous text message.
The message was only one line: [I'm Azalea. Someone wants to harm you. Be careful.]
Saskia stood up abruptly, the chair scraping the floor with a harsh sound.
A servant ran out, hands still wet. "Ms. Fuller, what's wrong?" she asked.
Saskia stared at the message for a long time, taking several deep breaths before sitting down. She replied, "Nothing."
But her mind was already in chaos.
Saskia's first reaction upon seeing the message wasn't to think someone was pretending, but to believe it was genuinely from Azalea. Azalea wasn't dead!
Immense joy washed over Saskia, but it was accompanied by deep confusion, especially with Azalea's warning.
Saskia sent several messages in a row, asking why Azalea hadn't come back and what was going on.
All went unanswered.
It was as if the sender had used the number just for that message and then abandoned it. There were no replies, and no calls were answered.
Saskia couldn't reach Azalea.
One day, Nathaniel was working late at the office.
When he returned, the servant immediately told him about Saskia's odd behavior.
Nathaniel frowned, not even changing his clothes before going to see Saskia.
And he was hit with the news that Azalea wasn't dead.
He asked, "What did you say?"
Saskia replied, "Azalea isn't dead. She's still alive."
Saskia was certain, repeating herself to make sure Nathaniel believed her.
She had said this many times before, but Nathaniel had always been skeptical, not believing Azalea was alive. After all, they had seen her buried.
But this time was different.
Saskia didn't say much; she just showed him the message. She said, "She sent me a message, cautioning us to stay careful. I think Azalea was saved back then. That charred body wasn't hers."
"How does she know these things?" Nathaniel's eyes scanned the message several times.
Unlike Saskia's natural trust in Azalea, he was more suspicious.
If Azalea was alive, why hadn't she come to them? And why send such a cryptic message?
