Chapter 684 I Don't Care
Desiree froze in her tracks.
She turned to Harold, eyes wide with disbelief.
She got every word he said, but together, they sounded so unreal.
"You mean to tell me your mom drugged you? With that kind of drug?" she repeated.
"Yeah," Harold nodded, feeling the embarrassment wash over him.
He had to tell her, no matter what. Whether they stayed together or not, he didn't want her thinking he was some player messing with women's hearts.
"I can't believe this... I, I..." Desiree stammered, at a loss for words.
Tears welled up in her eyes and finally spilled over, streaming down her face.
She thought about her mysterious miscarriage.
Back then, it was so strange. The baby was fine, her health was good, but as soon as Ember came to help, she lost the baby.
She had her suspicions about Ember but felt guilty for even thinking it.
Sure, Ember didn't like her, but this was her grandchild. How could she be so cruel?
Now, hearing Harold, she felt so foolish.
Ember would do anything to break them up, even drug her own son. What wouldn't she do?
Desiree didn't even need the evidence of her causing the miscarriage anymore.
She pulled her hand away from Harold. "So what if she drugged you? I saw you two hugging, Harold. Don't tell me nothing happened. Just because nothing happened now doesn't mean it won't in the future."
"Desiree! You don't trust me?" Harold's eyes were filled with pain.
Desiree shook her head.
If she didn't trust Harold, she wouldn't have married him. "It's not you I don't trust, it's your mom. My mom always said dating is between two people, but marriage is between two families. I didn't get it then, but now I do."
All that stuff about true love conquering all was for teenagers. She was too old to be that naive.
Ember didn't accept her and would do anything to break them up, even if she was pregnant.
She didn't care about the baby, she just wanted them both gone.
How sad was that?
Desiree didn't think she was that bad, but how did her life end up like this?
After thinking it over, she realized she just met the wrong person.
"But Desiree, if you judge me because of my mom, that's not fair," Harold had so much to say, but the words just wouldn't come out.
Desiree nodded. "Yeah, it's unfair to you, but staying with you and dealing with your mom's constant crap is unfair to me. Harold, let's end this on good terms. I'll see you next Monday."
Daryl had been watching from the sidelines.
He worried Desiree might change her mind because of Harold's words.
Thankfully, she didn't. He shot Harold a smug look. "Mr. Lewis, you're a CEO now. Don't go acting all clingy. It won't look good if people start talking."
Harold didn't care about his reputation if it meant winning Desiree back.
He started the company to give her a better life, after all.
But being clingy would only make things worse for Desiree, so he couldn't be selfish.
"Let's drop it. I'm tired. Let's finish picking out skincare products for Mom and go home," Desiree said, giving Harold one last look.
She had loved him deeply, and that love hadn't completely faded.
Even if they were getting divorced, she didn't want to hear others badmouthing him.
Daryl quickly took her hand. "Let's skip the shopping for now. Let's find a place to sit and eat something. After you rest, we can buy the skincare products. It's just us, no rush."
Isolde came over and grabbed Harold's arm.
She raised her voice, making sure they could hear. "Harold, let's go eat too. I just took some pictures of lipstick shades. I'll send them to Hermione and see which one she likes."
"Isolde, this isn't a stage, and we're not filming a movie. You don't need to act," Harold said, shaking her off.
Even if Desiree was with Daryl, he didn't want to be tangled up with Isolde.
They weren't kids who needed to hurt each other to prove a point.
He just wanted Desiree to be happy, and he'd be content watching from the sidelines.
"Harold! I'm just trying to help you!" Isolde snapped, clearly angry.
She pointed at Desiree's back. "You two aren't even divorced yet, and she's shopping with another man. How is she worth your concern? Mrs. Lewis was right, she's just a slut..." She didn't finish because Harold slapped her.
She covered her face, looking up at Harold in shock, her voice trembling. "You actually hit me?"
In the middle of the mall, in front of everyone, Harold had slapped her hard. He didn't show her any respect.
"Sorry about that," Harold said, but there was no remorse in his tone. "You know I love Desiree. Whether we're divorced or not, she's the only wife in my heart. I can't tolerate you insulting her."
He couldn't hit his own mother, but he could teach Isolde a lesson.
Isolde's tears fell. "You think she's your wife, but does she see you as her husband? If she trusted you even a little, it wouldn't have come to this."
"That's my business, not yours," Harold said. He'd rather Desiree not trust him so he could explain.
But the truth was, she didn't trust Ember, and everything she said was true. So he had nothing to say.
He couldn't change Ember, so he could only give Desiree her freedom.
Isolde told him, "I'm the only daughter-in-law Mrs. Lewis accepts. Harold, I don't care about your past, I just want a future with you. Your business has somthing to do with me."
