Chapter 638 The Banquet
Oscar threw out a bunch of ideas and let Harold pick one.
The meeting wrapped up in no time.
Harold headed back to his office, mulling over the meeting, looking pretty worn out.
"Harold! I heard something major went down at the company. You okay?" Desiree burst in.
"What are you doing here?" Harold tried to mask his fatigue, not wanting her to worry. "Didn't I tell you not to come by every day?"
Seeing him force a smile despite his exhaustion, Desiree got mad. "Don't give me that! I heard on my way here that a bunch of partners are bailing, and the company might go under. Why didn't you tell me?"
Desiree felt really hurt.
It wasn't just about the situation, but Harold's attitude.
He never told her anything, clearly wanting to keep her out of his life. What did he take her for?
Seeing Desiree's anger, Harold turned her around by her shoulders, realizing his mistake. "You're right. I shouldn't have kept you in the dark. Can you give me another chance?"
"This is the last time. If it happens again, I won't forgive you." Desiree glared at him, her slightly red eyes looking more reproachful than fierce.
Harold didn't take it lightly and nodded.
After calming Desiree down, Harold filled her in on everything that had happened in the past two days, including what Oscar said in the meeting.
After hearing it, Desiree panicked. "Is the company's cash flow really that bad? How about I put some of my money into it..."
"No," Harold cut her off firmly.
He could listen to Desiree on other matters, but not this one.
"If I use your money, starting the company would be pointless," Harold said.
"But now..."
"I'll handle the company's issues. We've got plans in place." Harold's gentle reassurance was firm and undeniable.
Seeing his resolute attitude, Desiree had to drop the idea of using her savings.
But this was their company. Even if she couldn't invest money, she couldn't just let it fall apart. In the following days, Desiree almost went to the company every day.
Liam and Tessa were not happy about not seeing Desiree all day.
Finally, one day when Desiree came back to grab something, they stopped her.
Tessa said, "You're out all day. Are you still involved with that assistant?"
"Mom." Desiree frowned and stopped. "I'm an adult now. It's my business. Can you stop controlling my life?"
Tessa immediately got angry and snapped, "What are you saying! We just want you to have a good life."
Desiree's lips curled into a mocking smile.
Liam and Tessa had always used this line to keep her in check.
Everything was for her own good, and as parents, they couldn't help but think of their children. But what had she gotten in the end? Before meeting Harold, almost none of her dreams had come true.
She was like a princess with a castle but nothing else.
Seeing the disappointment in Tessa's eyes, Desiree took a deep breath and said, "I'm just here to grab something. If you don't want to see me, I'll leave right away."
She turned to go.
At that moment, Liam, who had been silent, spoke up in a heavy tone, "You're not going anywhere."
"There's a banquet tonight hosted by the Fields Family for Daryl. You should go and see him."
He gave Desiree no chance to refuse.
Desiree's pent-up anger exploded, and she shouted, "I'm not going."
Liam's eyes instantly darkened. He was a man who didn't speak often, but when he did, he didn't like being contradicted.
Desiree's behavior was undoubtedly testing Liam's limits.
He was holding back his anger only because Desiree was his daughter.
"Desiree, don't talk to your father like that," Tessa chimed in. "Our families have always been close, and Daryl is your friend. We should show some respect."
"I know what you're trying to do. You just want to set me up with him, right?" Desiree sneered and said firmly, "I'm not going."
Liam stood up, his face showing the same cold smile. "Then you can't leave."
In the end, Desiree was locked at home by Liam and Tessa, who insisted she attend the Fields Family's banquet and even took her phone away.
Desiree couldn't message Harold and was extremely anxious but had no way out.
The next evening, Desiree, dressed in a black dress, went to the Fields Family's banquet.
Tessa went along as well, tasked with ensuring Desiree stayed for the entire banquet.
Getting out of the car, Desiree frowned the whole time, ignoring the people around, which made many unhappy.
Tessa looked at her with slight dissatisfaction. "Mind your expression. Bronte Langley is coming over."
Following Tessa's gaze, Desiree indeed saw a dignified woman in a suit, with short hair, looking more like a female executive than a socialite.
Bronte also saw them and immediately smiled warmly at Desiree. "Desiree is still as beautiful as ever. Even after all these years, I can recognize you at a glance."
Desiree put on a polite face and awkwardly exchanged pleasantries with Bronte, whom she hadn't seen in years.
"Oh, Daryl is coming over. Come and see Desiree," Bronte called Daryl over from a distance.
Desiree instinctively wanted to run.
But her hand was tightly held by Tessa, so she couldn't escape and had to watch Daryl.
As the main character of the banquet, Daryl was dressed impeccably.
With short hair and eyes reflecting countless stars, he walked straight towards Desiree, his gaze making her frown uncomfortably.
Bronte made a few teasing remarks, and Daryl finally looked away, a smirk forming on his lips. "Actually, we met just a few days ago."
Hearing this, Bronte raised an eyebrow instinctively.
