Chapter 239 A Clean Break
Adrian knew Pearl inside out. He was aware of everything.
"Great, you two team up now, and I'm the odd one out!" Oscar said, disheartened. He turned to Pearl with a cold smile. "Is this what you wanted to tell me? That you and Adrian are tight?"
From that moment, Pearl knew they were done for good.
Her heart still ached, but thinking about how he cared for Haley, even if he stayed married to her, it was a barrier she couldn't overcome.
He would never let go of Haley, which was something Pearl could never get over.
"Think whatever you want," Pearl said. "I've said all I needed to say."
"No need to say anything more," Oscar replied.
His gaze was icy as he pulled their marriage certificate from his suit pocket.
Holding up the two certificates, he mockingly said, "You don't want our marriage, and neither do I!"
Right in front of them, he tore the marriage certificate apart.
Pearl watched, her heart breaking as the pieces fell to the ground like snowflakes.
"Pearl, we're done. Completely done!" Oscar coldly threw down those words and walked out of the ward, never looking back.
Pearl stood silent, her gaze vacant, unable to react.
She instinctively looked down at the pieces on the ground, at the torn photo on the marriage certificate.
Oscar's face was indifferent, devoid of joy or love, while she, like a young girl in love for the first time, was brimming with happiness.
Their marriage had always been like this—only she was happy to have married him, while his thoughts had never been on her.
Pearl knelt down, her fingers caressing the torn pieces, picking them up one by one.
Adrian watched her, seeing that she was truly heartbroken.
She couldn't be indifferent to Oscar.
A tear fell to the ground.
Adrian quickly grabbed her hand.
Pearl looked up at him blankly. "What's wrong?"
"Are you crying?" Adrian asked, his eyes fixed on her. "Do you like him that much?"
Pearl hadn't realized she was crying. Hearing him, she quickly wiped away her tears, blinking to hold them back. "No, maybe my eyes are just uncomfortable."
"Pearl, you can tell me anything," Adrian said. "I know you like Oscar."
Pearl couldn't hold back anymore, tears streaming down as she looked at him. "How did you know?"
She thought she had hidden it well, but Adrian had figured it out.
Adrian said, "Because I care about you a lot, so naturally I noticed the secret buried deep in your heart."
"This isn't good," Pearl began to choke up, covering her face with her hands. "This means I have no secrets. You shouldn't know this; it makes me feel so embarrassed. I shouldn't have fallen for him, making myself so miserable!"
"I shouldn't like him!" Her emotions surged, and she couldn't stop the tears from falling.
This was a secret she found hard to speak of, which Oscar did not know, but Adrian did.
She had never mentioned it to anyone.
Adrian's words hit her hard; by paying attention to her, he knew she liked Oscar.
This indirectly showed that Oscar had no clue because he never focused on her.
She felt deeply sad.
Adrian's heart ached; he had never seen Pearl cry so painfully, just because Oscar had torn up their marriage certificate.
He didn't need to do anything else.
Adrian went over and held Pearl in his arms, gently patting her back. "I understand you. There's nothing wrong with liking someone."
"I was wrong," Pearl shook her head. "I was wrong from the beginning. I thought I was special, but I was just a passerby in his life. It was wrong from the start!"
She liked Oscar because he had saved her.
That was a life-risking act, and she thought Oscar must value her greatly. However, he treated others the same way, not just her, but many others, so she was not special.
Oscar could not remember her.
Her wishful thinking had harmed her.
She longed to turn back time, believing that had she known this, she wouldn't have been so invested.
She wouldn't have mistaken his indifference for attention, and she wouldn't have fallen into this love trap woven with knives.
"It's all going to be okay." Adrian's eyes were also red, and he said hoarsely, "Time will erase everything, and you will break free from it."
Pearl still clutched the pieces tightly in her hand.
She cried for a long time, tears flowing until she finally calmed down.
She had cried many times for Oscar, but this time was the saddest, her heart slowly breaking, unable to heal.
Eventually, she regained her composure, except for her red eyes, sitting in silence for a long time, holding onto the marriage certificate.
She needed time to heal.
She also believed Adrian's words that time would change everything, and she could kick Oscar out of her heart.
However, she had not yet found the right way to do so.
Adrian, seeing her like this, was still very worried. She needed someone to be with her, so he called Janetta over.
Janetta dropped everything to go to the hospital.
Seeing Janetta's arrival, Adrian said, "I'll leave her to you."
Janetta saw the worry on Adrian's face and said, "Adrian, I think you did the right thing. Since Oscar still cares about someone else, he should know that Pearl is also cared for and not lacking in love!"
Adrian said nothing. He had made the decision on his own and did not know if it was good or bad for Pearl.
He still walked out of the ward, leaving space for them.
Pearl wiped her face, afraid there were still tears, feeling too disheveled, which was unlike her. "I'm fine now. People have emotions, after all. Crying is a way to vent, to make oneself feel less miserable."
Janetta said, "Pearl, you should consider Adrian. The way to let go of the current one is to start with the next. Without him, the world won't stop turning."
Taking a deep breath to ease her suppressed emotions, Pearl shook her head, "I'm pregnant. It's not appropriate. It's unfair to him."
Janetta had a different view. "Adrian has waited for you for many years. Do you think he has been secretly in love with you for so long without taking any action?"
