Chapter 726 Pleasing to the Eye
"Alright," Harold said, not really paying attention to what she was saying. Whatever she said, he'd go along with it.
Seeing him like this, Desiree felt like they were back in their dating days. Back then, when they first got together, Harold would look at her and smile like a fool every day.
She had asked him what made him so happy, and his answer was always the same. "As long as you're by my side, no matter what happens, I'm happy."
But now, they were never going to see each other again. The baby in her womb had her love, along with the love of Liam and Tessa, but it lacked Harold's love.
"Desiree, do you blame me for secretly following you?" Harold asked, "I know you don't want to see me, but I was really scared you might be in danger, afraid he wasn't a good person."
"No," Desiree shook her head.
"You don't blame me, or..."
"I don't mind seeing you," Desiree interrupted him, "We once loved each other deeply, and we didn't break up because we stopped loving each other, but because of misunderstandings and our parents' interference."
She didn't want to keep living like this with him, but that didn't mean she hated him.
Harold's heart was racing.
Just then, the police arrived, interrupting them, "Who called the police? And why is there someone passed out on the ground?"
"It was me. He tried to assault me, and I sprayed him with pepper spray. The injuries on his face were from my husband fighting to protect me," Desiree explained briefly. "And those vendors outside, they took his money, so they closed up early and went home. He admitted it himself."
After getting the gist of the situation, the police took the unconscious Daryl away and then told Desiree, "You two should come to the station to make a statement."
Desiree nodded and followed.
When getting into the car, Harold suddenly grabbed her hand. Facing Desiree's puzzled look, he asked, "What did you call me?"
"My husband. We haven't received the divorce decree yet, so we're still married. If you have any objections, I won't say it like that in the future. Anyway, we'll get the divorce decree soon." Before Desiree could finish her sentence, Harold held her hand tighter.
"Of course not. I wish we wouldn't get divorced. Once we get the divorce decree, let's remarry."
Desiree didn't respond to this; she still hadn't decided what to do.
Soon, the police car arrived at the station. Desiree and Harold both made their statements. Daryl was still unconscious, so the police had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital for treatment.
Desiree accompanied Harold to the hospital to treat his wounds. During this time, Liam and Tessa got the news and rushed to the hospital. Seeing that Desiree was fine, they were relieved.
"That scared the hell out of me! I never thought he could be so extreme. It's our fault for not seeing him clearly before," Tessa said, still in shock.
Desiree was in the early stages of pregnancy. If Daryl had succeeded, the baby could have been lost. How could Desiree handle such a shock?
Desiree kept reassuring Liam and Tessa, "I'm really fine. Harold showed up just in time to protect me, and I had pepper spray in my bag. It worked really well."
Daryl still hadn't woken up.
"How's Harold doing?" Liam asked, suggesting they go see him.
Desiree led them to the ward. Harold was getting his wounds treated. When he saw them, he quickly stood up to greet them.
"Sit down and get your wounds treated first," Liam said, looking at him with mixed feelings.
Liam had always been unhappy with Harold, especially during the divorce. He wished Harold would never show up again. But today, Harold had protected Desiree. Because of that, Liam started to see him in a better light.
Tessa felt the same way. She walked up to Harold, looked at his wounds carefully, and then told the doctor, "Use the best medicine, try not to leave any scars."
The doctor agreed.
Tessa wanted to say something to Harold but didn't know what to say. They had never really talked much before.
In the end, it was Desiree who broke the silence, "Mom, Dad, you should go home first. I'll stay with him to get his wounds treated. After that, we might have to go to the police station again."
"Okay, you stay with him," Liam said, turning to leave.
Desiree walked them out.
Before leaving, Liam told Desiree, "If you decide to be with him, we won't oppose it."
"We'll talk about this later. I haven't decided yet. Dad, what's up with you today? You always wanted me to divorce him before," Desiree said, feeling he was acting a bit off.
Could it be that the incident with Daryl had left them too shaken?
Liam sighed, "He looks good, so the baby should be good-looking too. And he's willing to stand up for you. I heard his mom is very sick, so she probably won't be able to trouble you in the future."
Desiree was stunned. She hadn't told anyone about Ember's illness. But then she thought, her parents must have investigated the Lewis family while looking into Daryl.
"I'll think about it carefully. See you tonight," Desiree said, waving to them.
She turned back to the ward. Harold's wounds were already treated. This kind of pain was nothing to him. But in front of Desiree, he pretended to be in pain.
"Should I ask the doctor to give you a painkiller?" Desiree was about to leave when Harold pulled her back.
He cherished the time with Desiree, "If you stay with me, I won't feel the pain."
"So you were lying to me," Desiree said, laughing and teasing him, "Aren't you afraid I'll get mad?"
Harold thought for a moment, "If you get mad, you can hit me or scold me, but you can't ignore me."
"You're quite the charmer," Desiree said, unable to get angry.
She felt too sorry for Harold.
They were alone in the room and couldn't stay quiet. They began talking casually and enjoyed it more as they continued.
They had a lot to say. They talked until Daryl woke up and was taken back to the police station by the police. Only then did Desiree stand up, "We need to go to the police station too."
