Chapter 827 Healing
Saskia stayed by her side throughout the entire examination.
When the results came back, the doctor adjusted his glasses, his expression particularly complex. "It looks like her brain's been seriously damaged by drugs. Do you have any idea what she went through?"
Saskia fidgeted with her fingers. "My mom disappeared for years. We really don't know."
Seeing that they seemed sincere, the doctor finally dismissed his doubts.
"It seems someone injected her with drugs during those years."
"Is my mom gonna be like this forever?" Saskia asked, her worry evident.
The doctor's words made Saskia anxious. She couldn't imagine if Heidi would remain like this for the rest of her life.
Seeing her so tense, the doctor softened his tone. "Don't worry. If you take good care of her, there's a chance she could recover."
Saskia breathed a sigh of relief. Just like Jeffery had said, that was good news. Otherwise, even if she could take care of Heidi forever, the latter would likely be in constant pain in her subconscious.
After all, no one wanted to see themselves in a state of madness.
Heidi was also Benjamin's grandmother. Benjamin was still young, and Saskia feared he wouldn't be able to handle it.
Thinking of this, the relief she felt earlier was replaced by worry again.
Yesterday, she had specifically avoided Benjamin and sent him to Jade's place.
The next two days were the weekend, so she didn't have to worry. He could stay at the Egan Estate for those two days, but what about after that?
She couldn't keep him from seeing his grandmother forever.
Saskia remained silent as they left the hospital, lost in her thoughts.
Nathaniel glanced at her.
The next moment, Saskia felt a hand grasp hers. She looked up.
"Benjamin's a smart kid. If you explain it to him properly, he'll get it."
"Okay."
Saskia felt a bit better. Maybe she was just overthinking it. Benjamin had such a good temperament, and they hadn't even met yet. How could she jump to conclusions?
"Take the next couple of days off to take care of your mom. You don't need to come to the office." Nathaniel suggested.
Saskia hesitated. "But the Flower Coast District project..."
"Nola's already contacted Marcus. There'll be a breakthrough soon, thanks to your efforts." Nathaniel interrupted her, a slight smile on his lips.
This was one of the few good things that had happened recently.
Hearing his confidence, Saskia felt much more at ease, and her guilt lessened.
Thankfully, it was like this. Otherwise, it would have been bad to keep taking time off just a few days into her job.
So, Saskia stayed home to take care of Heidi.
Under her careful attention, Heidi no longer reacted like a frightened bird when she saw strangers.
This was evident when she interacted with the housekeeper.
At first, Heidi would be scared when she saw people. Now, even when the housekeeper approached her, Heidi didn't react and even curiously observed her.
"Ms. Fuller, the meal is ready. I'll be heading out soon." The housekeeper said, bringing in the food.
Saskia smiled. "Thank you. You can take tomorrow off. You've worked hard these past few days. I'll pay you extra."
The housekeeper's face lit up with joy, but then she noticed Heidi staring at her curiously.
"Um..."
"Sorry, my mom is like this with strangers." Saskia quickly apologized but didn't stop Heidi.
The doctor had said to encourage her reactions to the outside world, as long as they weren't too overwhelming.
Fortunately, the housekeeper was only momentarily surprised. "It's okay. Looking is fine. Would you like some soup? I'll get you some."
Heidi nodded.
The housekeeper went to get the soup, almost like she was taking care of a child.
When the housekeeper left, Heidi seemed a bit reluctant.
Saskia reassured her, "It's okay. She'll be back in a couple of days."
Heidi didn't seem to fully understand, but she continued eating. Despite her mental state being like that of a five-year-old, her actions were still mostly those of an adult, perhaps due to muscle memory.
Saskia watched Heidi eat with a sense of relief.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
After telling Heidi, she got up to answer the door and was stunned when she opened it.
Benjamin, not noticing his mom's surprise, cheerfully greeted her from Jade's arms. "Mom, I missed you."
Saskia looked at Jade.
Jade smiled and explained, "Benjamin really missed you. He was so distracted at the Egan Estate that I thought I'd bring him back to see you."
Saskia felt a bit flustered, standing frozen at the door.
Jade seemed to sense something was off.
But Benjamin was too excited. He jumped down and hugged Saskia, then ran inside without waiting.
Just like that, he and Heidi saw each other.
Jade looked at Heidi holding a bowl, then at Saskia, noticing a slight resemblance between the two but unsure.
Benjamin, however, had no such reservations. "Mom, who's this old lady?"
Seeing Benjamin's innocent curiosity, Saskia didn't know what to say.
She had always kept things from Benjamin, whether it was about his father or Jade.
Saskia felt a pang of guilt, almost suffocating her. She took a deep breath and made a decision. "Benjamin, this is my mom, your grandmother. Understand?"
Benjamin was even more curious. "Grandma?"
Saskia patiently explained.
Benjamin had never met any relatives other than Nathaniel and the others.
So it was normal for him not to understand the concept of a grandmother. Now, she had to explain it to him bit by bit.
"But why haven't I seen Grandma before?"
"Because your grandma had an accident..."
Saskia's eyes dimmed as she thought about how to explain it to Benjamin.
Benjamin, sensing her sadness, said, "I understand, Mom. Don't be sad. I'll get along well with Grandma."
He wiped away Saskia's tears with his small hands.
Saskia hugged him, feeling a mix of pain and relief.
Benjamin and Heidi got along surprisingly well. The two, in their own ways, quickly started playing together.
Meanwhile, Saskia and Jade talked in the living room.
"Sorry, I just wanted to bring Benjamin back to see you. I didn't mean to cause any trouble." Jade said, glancing at the room.
Saskia was actually grateful to Jade and smiled. "It's no trouble. If it weren't for you, I might still be too scared to let Benjamin meet my mom."
It turned out to be a mistake that led to the right outcome.
Jade smiled slightly but there was a hint of sadness in her eyes that wouldn't go away.
Saskia sensed that Jade had something to say.
Sure enough, Jade soon spoke up. "I actually came today because I need your help with something."
She paused, seeming a bit hesitant.
