Chapter 283 You're Not a Doctor at All

"Haley's doing well," Mae said. "She's been swamped with work, so she couldn't come see you."

"Busy with work," Hathaway said, a bit disappointed. "That's good. Being busy means she's got a bright future. I'm happy for her."

"Well, Mrs. Brown, I need to get back to work," Mae said.

"Alright." Hathaway, unable to see Haley herself, looked at the thermos in her hands and handed it to Mae. "This is chicken soup I made. She's probably too busy to eat properly. Take it to her for a break."

Mae took it. "Okay. Haley will appreciate this."

Mae went inside.

Hathaway stood at the door for a while, hoping to see Haley. When she couldn't, she got in her car and left.

Mae went to the lounge, where Haley was sitting and doing nothing.

"Haley, I sent Mrs. Brown away. She left this chicken soup for you," Mae said, placing the thermos on the table.

Haley glanced at it, indifferent. "Got it."

"Do you want to drink it?" Mae asked.

"No need," Haley said, showing no emotion. She wasn't moved by Hathaway's gesture at all. She didn't even want to meet Hathaway in person, let alon being touched by some chicken soup, which ended up in the trash.

Mae was surprised. Usually, Haley was fond of Hathaway.

Haley said, "I don't like it anymore."

Mae didn't think much of Haley's unusual behavior, assuming she really didn't like it anymore.

Hathaway didn't go home but went to the prison to visit someone.

After a while, she finally saw him.

They looked at each other through the glass. Hathaway's eyes showed some emotion but quickly returned to calm. She sat down and picked up the phone.

Kevin, about the same age as Hathaway, had ordinary features. Maybe because he'd been in prison for a long time, he looked worn, with many wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. He was shackled at the hands and feet, walking heavily, but his eyes were sinister, making people uneasy.

He looked at Hathaway with a smile.

He picked up the phone and said, "Didn't expect you to come see me."

Hathaway said, "It's been a long time. I never thought I'd see you again, especially in prison."

"I didn't expect to end up here either," Kevin paused. "But it doesn't matter. I'll be out soon."

Hathaway was angry. "I asked you to take care of Haley, and you ended up in prison. She hasn't had a good life all these years!"

"How do you know I didn't take care of her?" Kevin said with a cold smile. "If it weren't for me, she'd be dead by now."

Hathaway said, "I gave her to you along with a lot of money. You promised to raise her. You're her father. How could she possibly be okay? She's a big star now. If people find out her father was in prison, what will they think of her? Why can't you think more about her?"

Hathaway was close to being infuriated.

If she had known this would happen, she wouldn't have given Haley to him.

It had caused Haley so much suffering.

"You're her mother. Why didn't you take care of her yourself?" Kevin said calmly, ignoring her anger. "To please your rich husband, you abandoned your daughter. And now you question me. She's not even my biological daughter. If she were, I might have considered it!"

"You bastard!" Hathaway's eyes were red, and she gritted her teeth. "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have married into the Brown family. Kevin, you owe me for life!"

Kevin remembered this favor. "I know."

He paused and continued, "But when I get out, it will be good for you and your daughter."

Hathaway's face turned cold. "When you get out, live your life. Don't come looking for me or Haley. Don't disrupt her. That's the best thing you can do!"

She no longer held any expectations from him. All she wanted was for him not to cause harm to others. Haley had worked hard to get where she was. It hadn't been easy, and she wouldn't let him ruin it.

She knew giving Haley to Kevin hadn't given her a good life. Over the years, she had wronged Haley. This thought only increased her sense of guilt.

Kevin smiled without saying a word, looking at Hathaway meaningfully.

Hathaway had come to warn him, and that was it. After saying what she needed to, she angrily hung up the phone and left without looking back.

Kevin's gaze followed her, a cold smile playing on his lips.

"Did you bring everything for your check-up today?" Janetta asked Pearl before leaving.

Pearl had gotten up early. She needed to go to the hospital for a check-up.

"I've got everything," Pearl said, everything was in her bag.

She no longer wore high heels, dressing comfortably every day in sweaters, long skirts, and flat shoes, without makeup.

Janetta drove her to the hospital.

When Pearl arrived, the hospital had just opened, yet there was already a long queue. It might have been the weekend, and the obstetrics and gynecology department was quite busy.

Pearl waited in line, her number was towards the back, and she estimated it would be around eleven before her turn. While waiting, she saw pregnant women with big bellies coming out. Although it was tough, they still had happy smiles on their faces.

She touched her belly, thinking that in a few months, the baby would be born and grow up. She couldn't help but smile.

Around eleven o'clock, a nurse called out, "Pearl, it's your turn."

Janetta said to Pearl, "You go ahead. I'll wait for you outside."

Pearl nodded and followed the nurse's directions to the innermost room.

It was very quiet inside. Barbara, wearing a hat and mask, pointed to the seat in front of her. "Pearl, right? Please sit."

Pearl sat down and asked, "When can I get an ultrasound?"

"In a moment," Barbara looked up at Pearl. "According to your medical history, you had signs of a miscarriage before?"

"I did, a little."

Barbara said, "Lie down first. I'll draw some blood for a detailed check-up."

Following instructions, Pearl reclined on the nearby bed. After a while, Barbara came over and touched Pearl's belly a couple of times.

Observing Barbara's expression, Pearl asked, "Is everything alright?"

Barbara let go. "Nothing, I'll draw your blood first."

Barbara took a syringe and was about to draw Pearl's blood.

Staring at Barbara's hand closely, just as the needle was about to pierce her skin, Pearl grabbed Barbara's hand. "You're not a doctor at all!"
