Chapter 670 First Aid
"Mom, I wanna go to the hospital with you!" Christopher yelled, running after Pearl.
Lila tried to grab him, but he was too quick and slipped right past her.
Pearl, already at the door, turned around. "Christopher, we're super busy right now. We can't look after you. Stay home with Calliope. It'll make things easier for us."
Even though Christopher was a good kid and wouldn't cause any trouble at the hospital, and he'd even help with Emily, the place was just too crowded and chaotic. What if something happened?
So, it was safer for him to stay home.
"Okay, Mom. If Emily's fever goes down, let me know right away," Christopher said, waving at Pearl.
He really hoped Emily would get better soon.
"Christopher," Lila said, holding a Barbie doll as she walked over after hearing the door close, "Wanna play with toys together?"
"Sorry, Lila. I'm not in the mood right now. I can't play," Christopher shook his head.
Lila bit her lip and tugged on his arm, asking softly, "Do you really like Emily a lot?"
"Of course, I love her so much. She's the most important person to me in the world, besides Mom and Dad," Christopher answered without a second thought.
He took care of Emily not just to help his parents, but because he genuinely liked her.
Lila didn't say anything, just looked down silently.
At the hospital.
Since Emily was so young, they took her straight to the emergency room.
The doctor told Pearl, "We need to do a blood test to figure out what's causing her fever so we can treat it."
"Okay, please hurry," Pearl nodded.
Emily was almost unconscious from the fever, not reacting to anything, not even the needle for the blood draw.
Seeing her flushed little face, Pearl couldn't stop her tears from falling.
Her poor Emily, suffering so much at such a young age.
"Emily will be fine," Oscar gently patted Pearl's back to comfort her, "You're her mom, you have to be strong."
But his eyes showed his worry.
As parents, seeing their daughter suffer so much, who could stay calm?
Worrying was just natural.
While waiting for the results, Pearl put two fever patches on Emily, and Oscar was busy wiping her limbs with alcohol.
They tried everything, but Emily's temperature kept going up instead of down.
If it kept rising, it could be really bad.
Pearl couldn't bear to think about it.
Finally, the doctor rushed into the room with the test report, looking serious. "Has your child eaten anything special recently?"
"No," Pearl shook her head.
The doctor continued, "Do you two take care of the child yourselves, or does someone else help?"
"Neither. We just hired a new nanny to help out." Pearl felt a chill run down her spine.
The doctor wouldn't ask these questions for no reason.
Then, the doctor handed her the test report. "Your daughter's high fever is due to poisoning. Luckily, you brought her in time. If you'd waited another hour, it would've been too late."
Pearl couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Oscar quickly grabbed the report, which clearly showed that Emily's blood had a lot of toxic substances.
"Our hospital has seen cases where nannies drug kids, but it's usually just sleeping pills to keep them quiet. This is the first time we've seen someone try to kill a child," the doctor said, shaking his head in disbelief.
What could a nanny gain from killing a little kid?
Of course, there was another possibility: someone was out for revenge.
"Doctor, please detoxify my daughter first. We'll figure out the rest later," Pearl said, looking at Oscar.
They'd been together long enough to understand each other with just a glance.
"You stay with Emily. I'll be right back," Oscar said, striding out of the room.
Pearl stayed with Emily.
Seeing her tiny body covered in tubes broke her heart.
If a life could be exchanged for a life, the hospital rooftop would be full of mothers. She wished the poison was in her instead.
She'd rather endure a thousand times the pain than see Emily lying there.
Suddenly, a nurse rushed in. "Dr. Cooley, the hospital's blood supply is critically low. We've contacted other hospitals, but with the current traffic, it'll take at least fifteen minutes for them to get here."
"Why so long?" Dr. Cooley frowned.
Emily's blood was full of toxins, so she needed a complete blood transfusion. Once they started, they couldn't stop.
"Go push them again. This is a matter of life and death," Dr. Cooley demanded.
"Got it, Dr. Cooley. I'll go right away," the nurse said, hurrying out.
Pearl quickly walked over. "Emily and I have the same blood type. I can donate blood to her."
Typically, the max blood donation was 600cc, but this was about Emily's life. Pearl insisted, "I'm healthy. Please take a little more."
"Ma'am, these two 400cc bags are full. If we take more, you'll faint from blood loss," the nurse said, looking worried.
Pearl didn't care about that now.
She might faint, but she wouldn't die. But without blood, Emily would die!
"I'll sign a waiver. I'll take all the risks. Just do everything you can to save my daughter," Pearl said firmly.
Given the urgent need for blood, the nurse reluctantly complied until the ambulance from the nearby hospital arrived with several blood bags.
