Chapter 32 Candlelight Dinner

Night fell quietly, and the street lights outside Maple Peak Resort Hotel lit up. Oscar was about to leave the hotel when he suddenly saw a familiar figure appear at the entrance. He looked closely and realized it was Magdalen.

Magdalen quickly walked up to Oscar with a serious expression on her face. She spoke, "Oscar, where are you going?"

Oscar was puzzled and replied, "Magdalen, I'm going home. What's wrong?"

Magdalen shook her head and said firmly, "No, you can't leave. Pearl is here alone now, and you need to stay to take care of her."

Oscar hesitated for a moment and said, "But Magdalen, I..."

Interrupting him, Magdalen's tone left no room for doubt. "Oscar, you know Pearl's current situation. She needs someone to be with her, and you are the most suitable person. I hope you understand my request."

Looking at Magdalen's determined gaze, Oscar understood that this was not just a simple request, but a matter of trust and expectation. He took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright, Magdalen. I understand. I will stay to take care of Pearl."

Magdalen's expression softened slightly, and she patted Oscar on the shoulder. "Thank you, Oscar. I believe you will take good care of her. Remember, what Pearl needs now is understanding and companionship."

With that, Magdalen turned and left Maple Peak Resort Hotel, leaving Oscar standing there with a myriad of thoughts.

Taking a deep breath, Oscar collected his thoughts and headed to the front desk of Maple Peak Resort Hotel. He asked the receptionist, "Excuse me, can I order some food now? Please bring me the menu."

Upon hearing the inquiry, the receptionist immediately put on a warm smile and took out a exquisite menu from under the counter. "Sir, we have a variety of home-cooked specialties here at Maple Peak Resort Hotel. Our team of chefs comes from all over the country, offering you a range of flavorsome dishes. Do you have any specific preferences?"

After a moment of consideration, Oscar decided to choose food that Pearl might like. "Let's go with barbecue."

The receptionist nodded and then added, "Sir, we also have some seasonal specialties. For example, now is the best time for lobster, would you like to try some? It's our signature dish and very popular."

Intrigued by the recommendation, Oscar nodded. "Alright, let's have both."

The receptionist noted down the order and said with a smile, "Certainly, sir. Please wait a moment, we will prepare it for you right away."

Returning to the lounge, Oscar found Pearl sitting by the window lost in thought. He gently knocked on the door, and Pearl turned around, looking at him with a hint of confusion.

"I've ordered some food, are you hungry?" Oscar asked gently.

Pearl hesitated for a moment, then nodded slightly. "I'm a bit hungry."

Soon, the waiter wheeled in a food cart. Oscar helped to arrange the dishes on the table, filling the room with the aroma of delicious food. Pearl looked at the table full of dinner, her eyes lighting up, seeming to be in a better mood.

The waiter also brought two bottles of red wine and glasses, placed them on the table, and then smiled as he left the room.

Oscar walked over to Pearl, whispering, "Let's enjoy the food."

Pearl stood up and sat down at the table. Oscar poured her a glass of wine and started serving her food.

"This looks good, try it," Oscar offered the lobster to Pearl.

Pearl watched Oscar's actions, a hint of complex emotions flashing in her eyes, but she softly said, "Thank you."

The two of them began to dine quietly, with only the sound of utensils clinking echoing in the room. Oscar occasionally looked up at Pearl, noticing her gradually relaxing expression.

"This barbecue is really tender," Pearl suddenly spoke up. "You should try it."

Surprised by Pearl's words, Oscar looked at her and nodded with a smile. "Alright, I'll give it a try."

As the dinner progressed, the atmosphere between them became more relaxed. They started chatting about everyday topics, occasionally sharing a smile over some amusing incident.

"Do you remember the first time we met?" Pearl suddenly asked, a hint of nostalgia in her eyes.

Oscar paused for a moment, then smiled as he replied, "Of course, I remember. That day, you were wearing a white dress, standing in the sunlight, and I thought I had seen an angel."

Upon hearing this, Pearl blushed. "Is that what you thought back then?"

Oscar nodded. "Yes, that image is still vivid in my mind."

They shared a smile, the atmosphere becoming warmer.

As the night grew darker, the candlelight flickered in the room, adding a touch of romance to this special evening. Oscar and Pearl sat by the window, looking out at the night scene, engaging in a quiet conversation.

"Oscar," Pearl suddenly spoke, her voice trembling slightly. "Thank you for being with me tonight."

She gently picked up her utensils and said, "Do you know what I was thinking when I was looking at you just now?"

Oscar took a sip of wine, feeling puzzled. "What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking how lucky I have been all these years, never really experiencing any hardships in life or work." Pearl smiled. "My family wasn't wealthy before, but my parents never let me suffer too much. They even put me through college. After meeting you, everything went smoothly, you helped me repay my father's debt, and I married you successfully. I haven't had anything unbearable, even when I almost died once, I was saved. I am indeed very lucky, luckier than many others."

So, she was content.

Oscar listened attentively. After so many years of being with her, he knew a bit about her family background. She was the apple of her parents' eyes.

"Almost died? You never told me about that." Oscar asked, "What happened?"

Pearl stared at Oscar, took a deep breath. "Kidnapping, I was kidnapped once."

Oscar gazed back at her.

Pearl's demeanor softened. "During that time, I was on the brink of death, and I wasn't the only one who was held captive." She appeared somewhat melancholic. "But I was the sole survivor."

"Someone came to your rescue?" Oscar inquired.

A glimmer of hope shone in Pearl's eyes. "Yes, someone saved me, like a hero descending from the heavens. Without him, I wouldn't have made it." That moment was etched in her memory.

It marked the most significant turning point in her life, an event she would always carry with her.

However, Oscar's expression shifted. Placing his glass down, under Pearl's expectant gaze, he icily interjected, "That individual's name is Magee, isn't it?"
