Chapter 624 No One Wants You Except Me
A month flew by without any drama, and it was time for Pearl's prenatal checkup.
After breakfast, she asked Christopher to head upstairs and pack their stuff, planning to hit the hospital and wait for Oscar.
With her big belly, everything was a hassle. Pearl plopped down on the sofa, using her phone to guide Christopher on what to pack, walking him through it step by step.
Lately, Oscar had been buried in work, wanting to be there for her but just couldn't find the time.
Pearl got it and decided to go to the hospital on her own.
Half an hour later, Christopher came bounding downstairs with a backpack. "Mom, I'm a big kid now, I can help you, right?"
Pearl ruffled his hair and nodded, feeling relieved. "Yes, you've grown up."
Christopher beamed, slung on the backpack, and ran to grab the wheelchair. After Pearl settled in, he pushed her out the door.
Luckily, the wheelchair was electric; otherwise, Christopher wouldn't have been able to manage it.
The driver saw them and quickly got out of the car to help. "Mrs. Brown, you should've called me."
Pearl didn't want to bother anyone and smiled. "It's okay, Christopher's got me."
Christopher looked up and told the driver, "Dad's not home, I can take care of Mom."
The driver praised Christopher, making him even happier and more attentive to Pearl on the way.
As soon as they got to the hospital, Oscar showed up too.
Christopher proudly told Oscar how he had taken care of Pearl, and Oscar praised him right there, not wanting to kill his buzz.
They headed to the prenatal checkup room, did the paperwork, and then waited for their turn.
Just then, Damian and Janetta came out of the ultrasound room. Pearl thought Janetta was pregnant and quickly called out to them.
Janetta didn't recognize Pearl and looked up at Damian.
Damian didn't really want to talk to Pearl, nodded at her from a distance, and tried to leave with Janetta.
Pearl urged Oscar, "Push me over there. I need to ask Damian what's going on. If Janetta's pregnant, she deserves proper status."
Over the past month, Pearl had seen how Damian took care of Janetta. She couldn't say if she accepted it or not.
But it was what it was, and she couldn't change it.
Oscar didn't push Pearl to chase after Damian; instead, he ran over and brought Damian back.
Standing in front of Pearl, Damian greeted her with a smile.
Pearl ignored him and looked at Janetta, carefully reaching out to touch her hand.
Janetta, scared, hid behind Damian, her timid eyes tugging at Pearl's heart.
Pearl sighed and looked at Damian. "Is she pregnant?"
Damian was caught off guard and shook his head.
Pearl frowned. "If she's not pregnant, why'd you bring her here? She just had a kidney transplant?"
Pearl always felt responsible for Janetta's situation and wanted to make it right, but Janetta insisted on staying with Damian.
She had no way to take Janetta away from Damian.
Given Janetta's current state, she couldn't tell right from wrong. If Damian let her get pregnant, Pearl would definitely kill him.
Oscar gently comforted her and then warned Damian, "Mr. Clark, don't forget what I just said."
Damian smiled. "She's not pregnant; I just brought her for a checkup. You know, she's like a one- or two-year-old now. I'm worried she might hurt herself when I'm not looking."
Pearl, feeling a bit uneasy, asked straight up, "Did something happen?"
Damian cursed Pearl a hundred times in his head. He had his reasons for bringing Janetta here, and now he was the one taking care of her. Pearl had no right to butt in.
But he kept a smile on his face and said, "Nothing happened. I just had some free time today, so I brought her over."
Then Damian turned to Janetta and asked gently, "Are you hungry? Let's go get something to eat."
Janetta's eyes lit up, and she eagerly nodded, asking for something delicious.
"Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown, let's catch up another day. I need to get her something to eat." Damian's act didn't fool Pearl one bit.
As soon as he left, Pearl voiced her suspicion that Damian was up to no good.
She asked Oscar to use his connections to dig into Damian's intentions.
Just then, it was her turn for the checkup, and Oscar wheeled her into the examination room.
While Pearl was getting checked, Oscar called the hospital director directly.
In these matters, no one was more effective than the director.
By the time Pearl finished her checkup, the director had informed them that Damian intended to have Janetta's uterus removed.
Pearl was livid and wanted to confront Damian right then and there.
Oscar gently calmed her down, reminding her that Christopher was watching.
Pearl took a deep breath, calmed down, and suggested, "Maybe we should have Dad come and take Janetta back. I'm scared she'll get hurt."
Oscar nodded and whispered in her ear, "I'll handle it. Don't worry, I promise everything will be taken care of."
Pearl realized that given her current situation, she needed to be more thoughtful, so she tried to keep her emotions in check.
Damian quickly got wind of the hospital's news. Knowing that Pearl was onto him, he holed up in his study for an hour.
When he finally came out, he called Janetta over, holding her hand and asking, "Janie, will you leave me?"
Janetta shook her head. "No, I won't leave you."
Damian's face darkened, and he asked, "What if someone wants to take you away?"
Janetta looked at him blankly, not understanding.
Damian thought she wanted to leave and angrily grabbed her chin, making her look into his eyes.
He shouted, "Do you want to leave? You wanted to leave before, and now that you're not well, you still want to leave, right?"
Janetta was terrified by his outburst and cried, shaking her head.
"Speak!" Damian roared, dragging Janetta to the sofa in a fit of rage.
He glared down at her. "Don't even think about leaving me. No one else will want you but me."
Janetta was scared out of her mind, clutching his pant leg and crying loudly.
She didn't know why Damian was angry or what to do, so she just cried.
Damian ignored her, letting her cry while holding onto his leg.
At that moment, his phone buzzed with a message. Oscar had invited him out for a drink.
Damian sneered, pulled Janetta up, and wiped her tears.
Forcing a smile, he said, "Janie, I'm going out for a bit. Be good and stay here. Don't go anywhere, understand?"
Janetta nodded.
Damian left but thought for a moment and came back to lock the study door.
The night was quiet, with only the occasional sound of the wind.
Janetta curled up on the sofa, looking out the window, her tears falling silently.
She murmured to herself, "Janie is not afraid. Janie is brave. Janie doesn't cry. If Janie behaves, Damian won't scold me."
Muttering this, she eventually fell asleep.
