Chapter 220 Adrian's Disappointment
Adrian was momentarily speechless.
Pearl looked at Oscar with a bit of surprise.
Why did he carry the marriage certificate with him?
She couldn't understand him!
Oscar held it in his hand, unwrapping layer after layer, until finally, the marriage certificate was revealed.
He had to make sure Adrian saw it clearly, raising it high and saying, "This is my marriage certificate with Pearl, Mr. Egan, do you see it?"
Adrian pressed his lips together, his gaze deepening.
He saw a hint of uncharacteristic pride in Oscar's eyes.
As if he was genuinely happy that the marriage certificate still intact.
However, if Oscar and Pearl were in a contractual marriage, wouldn't he be eager to pursue a divorce?
At first, Adrian thought that Oscar, as a man, might be unwilling to admit defeat, especially since he had never acknowledged Pearl as his wife all these years.
Now, he detected a level of immaturity in Oscar that was previously unseen.
No one would tightly hold onto a marriage certificate and then boast about it to others.
"Mr. Brown, this marriage is destined to end," Adrian said calmly.
Oscar retorted, "Who mentioned anything about divorce?"
Adrian fell into deep thought; it seemed Oscar didn't desire a divorce.
"I did," Pearl interjected, gazing at Oscar. "Haven't I been saying it all along? Even though the marriage certificate still exists, one day it will transform into a divorce certificate in your hands!"
Adrian looked at Pearl in confusion again.
Oscar stared at Pearl, his face darkening, as he tightly gripped the marriage certificate in his hand and said coldly, "Marriage isn't something you can enter and exit at will. Do you think it's a game? Or do you think you're playing a game?"
Pearl couldn't understand Oscar.
Those words should have been said by her.
Oscar was treating the marriage as a game, making Pearl unable to enjoy a single day of happiness as his wife.
Saying these words was pointless.
Anyway, Pearl no longer yearned to be Oscar's wife; she wanted freedom, to escape his control.
Pearl turned around, expressionless, and said, "I've made up my mind!"
Adrian was more surprised by their marriage than by Pearl's declaration.
Adrian knew Pearl liked Oscar.
He had seen it long ago.
Pearl marrying Oscar and staying by his side was something Adrian had anticipated.
Even if they divorced, it would be because Pearl was disappointed. As her classmate and friend, he would certainly support her. He then said to Oscar, "Mr. Brown, I think you should respect Pearl's feelings."
Oscar didn't care; he knew Adrian hoped they would divorce so he could win Pearl's affection. Oscar was determined not to let that happen, and he sneered, "If I give in today, wouldn't I be handing my wife over to you?"
"What are you talking about?" Pearl said unhappily. "Adrian Egan and I are friends. Please don't speak nonsense and ruin Adrian's reputation!"
Oscar was angry inside. She didn't defend him in front of others, instead standing up for someone else. He said coldly, "You care about his reputation, why don't you care about mine?"
Pearl felt Oscar was being unreasonable and couldn't continue the conversation. She stood up. "You two can finish the meal; I won't be joining you!"
Pearl grabbed her bag and walked out.
When Adrian was about to follow her out, Oscar stood up before him. Oscar coldly warning Adrian, "Mr. Egan, Pearl and I are married. You are nothing. Don't make it difficult for both of us!"
Adrian froze, his brows relaxing and then furrowing again, but he did not take another step forward.
Oscar, however, chased after her.
Adrian sat back down in his chair, looking at the untouched dishes on the table. His entire demeanor seemed desolate, and his face bore an uncharacteristic look of disappointment.
Adrian picked up a nearby glass of wine and drank.
Adrian had always been rational. Rationally standing behind Pearl, maintaining a friendship with her.
Even admitting that he liked Pearl was something he did only after drinking, using the alcohol to express his inner frustrations, but he couldn't take another step forward.
Adrian knew Pearl liked Oscar.
Adrian didn't want to make her feel troubled and wanted to give her enough respect.
Adrian was never as straightforward as Oscar.
Perhaps only the one being loved could be so bold. He envied Oscar for having Pearl's love.
Adrian let out a bitter laugh, filled his glass, and downed it in one gulp.
His phone beside his left hand kept vibrating.
He glanced at it sideways, then turned his head away, showing no intention of answering, just drinking in silence.
Pearl left the restaurant, intending to hail a cab home.
There were no available taxis nearby, and checking her phone, she saw there were over thirty people waiting for a ride.
t seemed she would have to wait at least half an hour to get a ride.
Seeing Oscar follow her, Pearl didn't pause, heading in the direction of her home.
Oscar looked around but didn't move forward to chase her. He knew it was impossible to get a cab at this time.
He waited for the driver to bring the car around.
The car followed behind Pearl, and Oscar rolled down the window, shouting, "Get in, I'll drive you home!"
Pearl didn't turn around. "No need!"
Oscar insisted, "It only takes twenty minutes to drive to your place from here. Walking will take you an hour!"
"I've called a cab."
"There are so many people here; how are you going to get a cab? Don't be stubborn."
"None of your business!"
Pearl was feeling a bit emotional, but Oscar wasn't upset. On the contrary, he had plenty of patience.
He honked the horn directly here.
People around couldn't help but glance over.
Then he honked twice more.
"If you don't get in, I'll follow you and keep honking," Oscar added.
Pearl glanced back. There were many cars behind him, and if he kept honking, it would disrupt traffic.
He really didn't consider other's feelings.
It was too conspicuous.
Surely, someone would take a picture, and they would become the center of attention!
Pearl had no choice but to get into his car.
The car stopped below her apartment, and Pearl got out and walked upstairs.
Oscar followed her without hesitation.
Seeing him following without any intention of leaving, Pearl said, "Mr. Brown, thank you for driving me home. I've arrived, so you can go back."
Oscar saw the elevator door open and reminded her, "Aren't you going in?"
Pearl pursed her lips and stepped into the elevator.
Oscar followed.
"You've lived here for so long, and I haven't seen it. It's not too much to take a look," Oscar said to her.
Pearl said nothing, just hoping he would really leave after a quick look.
She lived on the eighth floor, not very high, and the elevator arrived quickly.
It was a studio apartment, one bedroom, one living room, and one bathroom. It wasn't very spacious, but was very clean. It was a newly opened apartment, with brand new furniture inside.
However, compared to where Oscar lived, this place was certainly not as good.
Oscar had been accustomed to luxury since childhood and would never live in such a small place in his life.
She hoped Oscar would take one look and leave in disdain.
Pearl opened the door but didn't go in. Instead, she stood at the entrance and said to him, "This is where I live. It may be small, but it has everything one needs. You can see it all at a glance!"
