Chapter 327 She Was Poisoned
Lauren almost fainted when she heard the news.
"Lauren," Rachel said, catching her.
"Eldorians? What's that place?" Pearl asked.
Rachel snapped, "It's dangerous! Why would he go there? He asked me weird questions. Did you push him to go?"
Pearl was baffled. "What questions?"
Rachel's eyes welled up. "He asked about Eldorians, drugs, and poisons. I told him everything. If I'd known, I wouldn't have said a word. Why did he go? He knows it's risky!"
Pearl's heart sank. 'Drugs and poisons. Is there a link?'
Pearl felt dizzy with worry, but Emma steadied her.
They must be hiding something!
Lauren started crying. "I only have one son. What if something happens to him?"
"It'll be okay. I'll have Dad find Adrian. It'll be fine," Rachel reassured.
Pearl tried to calm down. Things had been too weird lately.
'Not just Adrian. Even Jeffery and Oscar have been acting strange.'
"I need to go back," Pearl said, sensing something. She just hoped it wouldn't get worse.
"Pearl, I'll take you," Emma offered, seeing her pale face.
Pearl just wanted to find Jeffery quickly.
Maybe he had answers.
"You can't leave!" Rachel blocked her. "You are the last person he visited and he told you he was going abroad. You must know where he is."
"I don't," Pearl said. "I've told you everything. I need to check something now!"
Lauren, frantic, lashed out at Pearl. "It's your fault. Adrian never agreed to the engagement because of you, right? Now he's in danger. I should've stopped him from seeing you. When has he ever been so impulsive? It must be because of you!"
The harsh words hit Pearl hard.
She had been uneasy but hadn't asked more questions.
If Adrian went to such a dangerous place because of her, she'd feel guilty forever.
"The priority is finding Adrian. Blaming me won't help. I'll find a way to locate him!" Pearl said firmly.
"Finding Adrian is the most important thing," Rachel agreed.
Pearl left for Jeffery's studio.
Jeffery opened the door and saw Pearl's anxious face. He took off his gloves and handed her a tissue. "What's wrong? Why are you so anxious?"
Pearl, still catching her breath, asked, "Are you all hiding something from me?"
Jeffery's face tensed. "What could we be hiding?"
"Adrian went to Eldorians!" Pearl said. "You know how dangerous it is. He's missing, and his phone's off. You, Adrian, and Oscar have all been acting strange. What are you hiding?"
"He did?" Jeffery was stunned. He didn't expect Adrian to actually go.
Pearl grabbed Jeffery's sleeve, her eyes serious. "I know you won't lie to me. Tell me, why did he go to Eldorians? Is it because of me?"
Jeffery's eyes grew complicated, then dimmed. "Carol."
"Tell me," Pearl said, gripping his sleeve tighter. "Is something wrong with me? Did he go to get medicine?"
"Carol," Jeffery's voice wavered.
He had planned to keep it from her until she got better. He wanted her to be carefree, but now she knew.
Pearl got her answer from his hesitation.
She let go of his sleeve, eyes red, a bitter smile on her lips. "No wonder I felt off. Always tired. So, there really is something wrong with me. That's why you've been by my side."
Her voice choked up. "No wonder Oscar left me. It's because of my health."
"Don't say that," Jeffery said, guilt in his eyes. He reached out to touch her but stopped halfway. "You'll get better. I won't let you die."
"Die?" Pearl looked at him. "Is it that serious? Why am I fine now? Tell me, what's going to happen to me?"
Jeffery put his hands behind his back. "It's not very serious yet. We'll find a solution before it gets worse."
Pearl asked again, "What's the worst outcome? Will I die?"
Jeffery pressed his lips together. "I won't let it happen."
It was his most resolute answer. He would die before letting Pearl die.
Pearl laughed bitterly. "Stop comforting me. Why didn't you tell me? Do you think I'm not strong enough? If you'd told me earlier, I could've stopped Adrian."
"You couldn't have stopped him. He wants you to live too," Jeffery said.
Pearl felt helpless. "Why are you all doing this? It's not worth it. Does Eldorians have a cure for my illness?"
"There's hope."
"But it's not guaranteed. Is he crazy? Isn't it dangerous there? He's risking his life!" Pearl's emotions were all over the place.
Jeffery repeated, "Where there's hope, there's life."
Pearl felt overwhelmed. She hadn't expected this. It was hard to accept and deepened her guilt. She felt utterly useless.
She couldn't just sit and wait, nor let Adrian risk his life for her. "I need to find him!"
Jeffery grabbed her arm. "He's taking a big risk for you. You can't be impulsive. Going there won't solve anything!"
Pearl looked at him again. "So I should just wait?"
"You have to wait," Jeffery told her. "Don't you have unfulfilled wishes? You still have TV series to shoot, a career to reach the top of. You have more important things to do!"
Pearl stared at him. "What about Adrian?"
"He'll come back," Jeffery said. "He wouldn't want you to take risks. If you go after him, everything he did would be in vain!"
Pearl clenched her fists tightly. Accepting this reality was excruciating.
"What illness do I have? Is there no cure? Does Adrian have to go to Eldorians?"
"You've been poisoned. It's not something an ordinary person can cure."
"Poisoned!" Pearl was shocked. "When? How did I not know?"
She thought about it and felt terrified. She hadn't felt anything at all. She guessed it was related to The Crimson Eclipse Society and felt they were terrifying.
She suddenly remembered the injection she got when Barbara kidnapped her.
'Could it have been then?'
Just then, the studio door sounded again, and Pearl's fearful gaze turned towards it.
