Chapter 661 Unexpected Incident

With that thought, Christopher spoke up, "Dad, maybe we should just stay in. You need more rest. I'd rather you catch some extra sleep."

Oscar's smile widened. "I've got plenty of time to rest, and I can still go out with you. No big deal. Since Harold and Desiree left, I had HR hire another assistant. We finally got someone yesterday, and she starts today. I can pass off some of my tasks to her, which will make things easier for me."

"That's awesome," Pearl said, feeling relieved.

She didn't blame Oscar for being busy; he was working hard to give them a better life. But still, who wouldn't want their husband to be more involved at home?

Their current setup was just perfect.

"Alright, I'll pack up after dinner, and we'll head out early tomorrow. Should Emily come with us or stay home?" Pearl hesitated.

Emily was so young and slept most of the time. Taking her out might mess with her rest, and the noise could scare her.

Pearl preferred to leave her at home.

Oscar agreed. "After dinner, I'll ask Desiree to help look after Emily, along with the nanny. We'll be back soon, so it should be fine."

Getting a few days off was rare, so he chose a nearby city for their trip.

Pearl trusted Desiree, who loved kids and was super patient.

After dinner, she went upstairs to pack, and Christopher helped. He grabbed his clothes and the toys Oscar bought. "Mom, can I take this toy on the trip?"

"Of course," Pearl said, placing the toy in the suitcase. "As long as it fits, you can bring whatever you want."

They were going out to have fun, so she was happy to grant Christopher's small wishes.

They quickly filled the suitcase to the brim.

To make it easier to leave in the morning, Pearl pushed the suitcase to the living room and saw Oscar soothing Emily.

He held Emily like she was a rare treasure, bottle in hand. "Come on, just one more sip."

Emily fussed, wanting to play instead.

Oscar put the bottle down, supporting her head with one hand and her bottom with the other, gently rocking her.

He rocked her for several minutes. Pearl wanted to help, but Oscar waved her off. "I'm not tired. You should rest early."

"Got it," Pearl said, heading to the bedroom. She told Christopher a few stories until Oscar came back.

It was still early, and they wanted some quality time together, but Christopher showed up with his blanket. "Mom, Dad, can I sleep with you tonight?"

Oscar couldn't say no, so he moved aside to make room for him in the middle. They all slept well that night. The next morning, they dropped Emily off with Desiree and hit the road to the nearby city.

By the time they got off the highway, it was already noon. Oscar took them to the biggest mall in the city, where they wandered around and planned to eat on the top floor.

Suddenly, a loud fire alarm blared through the mall.

"There's a fire. We need to get out, now!" Oscar quickly scooped up Christopher and grabbed Pearl's hand.

They rushed towards the emergency exit.

When they got there, it was already packed with people, all trying to get out first.

Oscar held Christopher even tighter.

They couldn't afford to get separated, especially with Christopher being so small. He could easily get lost in the crowd.

Christopher clung tightly to Oscar's neck, understanding the seriousness of the situation.

Suddenly, they heard a child crying nearby.

Pearl, always sensitive to such sounds, quickly looked over and saw a little girl in a floral dress, about Christopher's age, crying helplessly.

She was alone in the crowd, which was dangerous.

Seeing the girl about to fall, with a large foot already stepping on her shoe, Pearl made a quick decision. She let go of Oscar's hand. "You take Christopher out first. We'll meet outside."

Leaving those words, she squeezed through the crowd to the little girl and picked her up. "Where are your parents? Where did they go?"

The girl cried even harder.

She reached out to hug Pearl's neck, revealing bruises on her arm.

Pearl's face darkened. 'Are her parents abusing her?'

But now wasn't the time to check.

She pushed forward and finally made it out of the emergency exit.

Once outside the mall, the first thing she did was look for Oscar and Christopher. Fortunately, they were standing not far away, easily visible.

"Christopher, are you okay?" Pearl ran over and checked him from head to toe, relieved to find no injuries.

Christopher curiously looked at the little girl in Pearl's arms.

He reached out and asked kindly, "What's your name?"

"I... I don't know," the girl blinked, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Pearl felt her heart ache seeing this. Such a cute little girl, how could her parents be so cruel?

She put the girl down. "Do you remember your parents' phone numbers? I can call the police, and they can tell them. Then they won't dare to hurt you anymore."

The girl cried even harder, and after a while, she said, "But I don't have parents."

This answer surprised both Pearl and Oscar.

No matter how they asked, the girl insisted she had no parents and was alone on the streets.

"You don't have to worry about me. I'm used to this life," she said, wiping her tears and trying to leave.
