Chapter 271 Character Interview
Pearl saw Barbara looking a bit messy and assumed they were having a wild time. But the noise seemed too loud for that.
Barbara crossed her arms, catching on. "Oh, you live next door. That explains it."
"Everything okay?" Pearl asked, realizing something was up. "Was everyone alright?"
"Was it loud?" Barbara asked.
"A bit."
"Sorry for the disturbance," Barbara said with a smile. "All good now, you can sleep peacefully."
After a brief chat, Barbara gave Pearl a knowing look and walked away.
Once the noise stopped, Pearl shut the door. Jeffery had hurt his hand earlier, and now this woman showed up making a racket. Something felt off.
But it wasn't her problem, so she went back to bed.
The next day, Pearl got an assignment from Harper for a character interview, usually a field reporter's job.
Harper was waiting for Pearl early in the morning. "You know the president of HarborView Holdings Group, right? Big deal. He finally agreed to an interview with Horizon Network. It's at noon, and you and Emma are on it."
Pearl knew of HarborView Holdings Group. They were big in the restaurant industry, though they hadn't worked with the Brown Group. The CEO was in his fifties and had built the company from scratch.
"Just Emma and me?" Pearl was unsure. "I've only been here a short time and lack experience. Maybe someone more seasoned should go."
She wasn't avoiding it; she just didn't want to mess up or damage the Network's good name as an employee .
"Don't worry, everyone has a first time," Harper said. "This is your chance. Do well, and there will be more opportunities. I believe in you."
Harper's confidence meant a lot, so Pearl nodded. "Alright, I'll do it."
Harper patted her shoulder. "Don't let me down. Completing this task is my expectation."
When Pearl committed to something, she gave it her all.
She started researching the CEO of HarborView Holdings Group. Being a journalist was like being a secretary; you needed to know your stuff.
Emma was excited. "Pearl, we're finally getting a field job!"
Pearl, organizing her notes, replied, "Yeah, isn't this what you wanted?"
"Absolutely," Emma said, grinning. "Who wouldn't want to be like Chloe? She was a star before she got fired. I want my moment too. Once we're out there, we'll be real reporters, doing on-site news. People will see us on TV. Isn't that awesome?"
Emma wanted to build her name and make her family proud.
Pearl said, "I hope you get there."
Emma, resting her chin on her hand, asked, "Pearl, don't you have any ambitions? Don't you want to be on TV for everyone to see?"
Pearl paused, considering Emma's question. She'd never really thought about that goal. Maybe Emma had a pure heart, wanting to make a name in journalism. Pearl was in it to give people a voice. She didn't have big ambitions.
Seeing Emma's innocent look, Pearl smiled. "I haven't thought about it yet. We're different."
"Yeah, we are. You've done so much already. You were Oscar's senior secretary at the Brown Group. You even quit that job, so you must have big plans," Emma said, clearly admiring her.
Pearl was good at everything and could help Emma improve. Emma needed to learn from her.
"We're all just regular people. Don't put me on a pedestal," Pearl said. "I've been working for years, while you're just starting. When I was your age, I was probably in a similar spot. As you gain experience, you'll surpass me."
"You're just being modest," Emma said with a smile. "Honestly, working with you is my good fortune. I feel like my luck has improved."
"Then I hope you always have such good luck," Pearl said warmly.
Emma, smiling brightly, hugged Pearl's shoulder, showing their close bond.
Pearl had gathered enough information. With a good understanding of the CEO of HarborView Holdings Group, they set off.
This was Emma's first field assignment, and she was nervous. When they arrived at HarborView Holdings Group, she adjusted her attire and checked herself in the mirror.
As they got out of the car, she asked, "Pearl, do I look okay? I hope I won't hold you back."
"You look very elegant and appropriate."
With Pearl's reassurance, Emma felt more confident and nodded. "Alright."
She held the microphone and entered with Pearl.
HarborView Holdings Group wasn't large, maybe because the restaurant industry didn't need a big headquarter. It was half the size of the Brown Group.
At the front desk, Pearl introduced them, "We're from Horizon Network and here to interview your CEO."
The receptionist checked the appointment and said kindly, "It's scheduled for noon. The CEO is upstairs. I'll take you there now."
"Alright."
They took the elevator to the twentieth floor. When the doors opened, Pearl was surprised. There were no offices, just a spacious area that didn't look like a work environment.
"Please wait here, I'll inform him."
Pearl nodded.
"Pearl, this is strange. There's no one on this floor," Emma remarked.
"Maybe this floor is a private area," Pearl guessed.
"The CEO of HarborView sure knows how to enjoy himself," Emma said. "Reserving an entire floor for personal space."
Pearl paused. From her research, the CEO seemed down-to-earth and frugal. It didn't fit that he'd reserve a whole floor for himself.
"Ms. Harris, the president will see you now," the receptionist said with a smile.
Pearl stopped thinking about it.
"Miss, please stay here. The president only wants to see Ms. Harris," the receptionist said, stopping Emma.
Pearl turned back. "She came with me."
The receptionist continued to smile. "That's the CEO's request."
Emma said, "You go ahead. Maybe he values his privacy."
There was only one door. As Pearl turned the handle, she was surprised to find a vast swimming pool inside the room!
