Chapter 597 Exposure
Harold looked up and said, "Alright, since you guys aren't into teaming up, let's wrap it up for today. Time to hit the road."
The factory manager's face tightened, and he scrambled to persuade them otherwise. "Hold on, we can still talk this out. How about crashing here for the night? You've had a rough journey and must be exhausted."
Harold was about to say no when Desiree coughed. He glanced at her and changed his mind. "Okay, we'll stay for the night."
Night fell.
As the night settled in, Harold turned to Desiree and asked, "Why did you want to stay?"
He doubted she was just tired. A mischievous glint appeared in Desiree's eyes. "No businessperson is squeaky clean. I found out this factory is up to some illegal stuff. I need to check it out tonight. If it's true, we can report them."
She seemed pretty excited about it. Harold quickly asked, "Are you sure you saw it right?"
If it was true, shutting them down wouldn't be hard with their connections.
"Absolutely. And I want to get back at them. We can't let today's trouble go to waste," said Desiree.
They decided to act right away and started investigating. While they were deep into it, a cold voice suddenly came from behind, "Mr. Lewis, Miss Sandvik, what are you doing here in the middle of the night?"
Hearing the familiar voice, Harold's body tensed up. He turned around to see the factory owner holding a flashlight, his face looking pale in the light.
Desiree immediately felt a bit scared. Harold gave her a reassuring look and said calmly, "Just taking a walk. We're a bit tired now, so we'll head back."
He was about to take Desiree and leave when the factory manager blocked their way, smiling. "Leaving already? You found this place with such effort, and you're planning to leave so easily?"
Harold explained, "We just stumbled upon this place by accident. We didn't see anything."
In fact, Harold had already sent the evidence out.
The factory manager squinted at him, asking, "Really?"
Desiree's palms were sweating with nervousness. She regretted her desire for revenge and should have taken Harold away immediately. If anything happened to Harold here, she'd carry that guilt with her forever.
Harold remained calm and nodded, saying, "Mr. Brown knows where we are. If we disappear, he'll tear this place apart looking for us."
The factory owner sneered and no longer hid his contempt. "Just a little assistant like you? Mr. Brown would care that much about you?"
His disdainful look made Harold's heart sink. It was difficult to talk to silly people.
Desiree immediately said, "We are Mr. Brown's trusted aides. If we go missing, it won't be good for you either. Why not let us go, and I'll pretend I didn't see anything."
As she spoke, Desiree nervously clenched her hand. The man seemed to be thinking it over. Harold seized the opportunity, grabbed Desiree's hand, and said, "Run!"
They immediately started running.
The factory manager, realizing something was up, yelled, "Go after them! Don't let them get away!"
Cold sweat dripped down his forehead as he cursed his own stupidity.
Harold and Desiree sprinted ahead, but Desiree quickly started to lag. Despite her best efforts, her heavy breathing showed she was reaching her limit.
"Harold, you go on. Don't worry about me," she panted.
"No way. Get on my back," Harold shot back.
Desiree was taken aback and shook her head. "No."
"Hurry up, or we'll get caught," Harold said anxiously.
Hearing this, Desiree didn't hesitate any longer. She wrapped her arms around Harold's neck. "Am I heavy?"
She felt guilty, thinking if she had exercised more, she wouldn't be a burden now.
Desiree's body was soft, but Harold had no romantic thoughts at the moment. He adjusted her position and said, "You're as light as a feather, no problem at all."
Hearing his exaggerated words, she couldn't help but laugh.
Harold glanced at her and joked, "If we die together now, would it be considered a romantic death?"
Both of them were stunned by his words. Harold coughed and fell silent.
Suddenly, he heard a soft voice above, "Actually, that wouldn't be so bad."
Harold laughed. "Don't worry, you'll be fine."
As soon as he finished speaking, he stopped abruptly. The sudden halt caused some loose stones to tumble off the cliff.
The pursuers were closing in, and the cliff was right in front of them, putting them in a tight spot.
The cliff didn't seem too high. If they jumped, they might survive, but if they got caught, it wouldn't end well.
Thinking of this, Harold looked up and asked, "Desiree, are you scared?"
His question was firm, and Desiree instantly understood his intention. She replied confidently, "Of course not."
As soon as she finished speaking, Harold jumped off the cliff with Desiree. The pursuers were stunned by the sight.
Someone said, "What now? How do we explain this when we get back?"
"They jumped off a cliff. Even if they survive, they'll be injured. Let's just go back."
With that, they turned and left. After all, they weren't paid enough to risk their lives.
At the bottom of the cliff, Harold tried to shield Desiree as they rolled down. While Desiree sustained only minor injuries, Harold fared far worse.
Desiree tried to stay conscious and called out, "Harold, wake up. Harold?"
After a while, Harold slowly came to. He had multiple abrasions and coughed. "Stop shouting."
Hearing his voice, Desiree was overjoyed and hugged him. "I'm so glad you're okay. I was terrified."
If Harold had died because of her, she would never forgive herself.
"I'm lucky guy. Nothing will happen to me." He tried to get up but found he had no strength.
"Let me help you." Desiree immediately stepped forward.
She supported Harold as they walked, sweat forming on her forehead.
Harold wanted to say something but stopped. He had no other options now.
Suddenly, a snake slithered into view, prompting a scream from Desiree that startled the reptile. It hissed menacingly and then lunged towards them.
