Chapter 691 Sensing Something

Pearl took slow, deliberate steps toward Lonnie. He pushed himself up with his hands, instinctively scooting back, fear etched in his eyes.

Pearl was a beast in a fight, and she didn't hold back.

Lonnie's whole body ached, with a sharp pain radiating particularly from his waist. He was pretty sure she'd busted the bones in his lower back. "Don't come any closer. If you touch us, our organization won't let you off the hook."

Pearl smirked, "Do you think I'm dumb? Even if I let you go, your organization wouldn't spare me. Besides, are you really that important?"

They were just the organization's grunts, doing the dirty work. If they succeeded, they'd get a pat on the back. But they'd failed.

"Even if I let you go, do you think you'll make it?" Pearl pressed.

Lonnie went quiet.

He clenched his teeth, making a big decision. "Mrs. Brown, you're right. So if you let us go, we won't go back. In return, I can spill the organization's secrets."

"Lonnie!" The others were freaking out.

If they could move, they'd be all over him, shutting him up.

'You can talk crap, but you can't betray the organization.'

Failing the mission meant punishment, but at least they'd live. Betray the organization, however, meant certain death—not just for them, but for their friends and family as well.

"Looks like your crew isn't too loyal." Pearl stopped a few steps away. "There's a police station nearby. If I call them, they'll be here in five minutes. I bet you don't even have IDs, do you?"

She didn't know much about the organization, but Lila was a foreign kid, so their base had to be abroad.

No IDs and attempted murder? They were screwed.

"What's the name of your organization and why you're after my family?" Pearl was baffled.

These guys were ruthless, even willing to hurt a baby, which meant they really wanted her family gone.

"Our organization is called the Shadow Organization." Lonnie looked like he was ready to die. "We're after you because the Brown family is loaded. You took business from our boss, so he wants revenge."

"For that?" Pearl frowned, then kicked him again. "Do you know how many lives you've ruined?"

"I know. If I had a choice, I wouldn't do this. But we're all orphans, taken in by the organization young and trained endlessly. If we disobey, we're tortured to death. Mrs. Brown, I've told you everything. Can you let us go now?" Pearl didn't say a word.

She just stood there, deep in thought.

Lonnie waited, getting more and more impatient. "I can tell you another secret, about a treasure. Whoever has it will be filthy rich. Mrs. Brown, come closer. I'll only tell you."

Who could resist that kind of fortune?

Sure enough, Pearl was intrigued.

She walked toward him, step by step.

Lonnie timed it perfectly and suddenly whipped out a small syringe from his pocket, aiming for Pearl's arm.

No way was he really going to betray the organization.

No matter how tough Pearl was, she was just a woman, and women were gullible.

He made up the treasure story to bait her.

Once the drug was in her, it would kick in within five minutes. Then the tables would turn.

Oscar adored Pearl, right? With her in their grasp, they wouldn't fear his refusal. Mission accomplished, and they'd get a sweet reward.

Just as he was dreaming of the future, something unexpected happened.

With lightning speed, Pearl yanked her hand back, stomping on his injured toe and snatching the syringe from his grip. Before he could even register what had happened, Pearl had plunged the needle into his arm and depressed the plunger.

The whole move was smooth as silk.

He stared at her, stunned. "How could this happen? You never trusted me!"

No one could react that fast.

There was only one explanation: Pearl had been on guard from the start. She probably didn't believe a word he said.

"How could I trust you guys?" Pearl sneered, "Before you spoke, they were so tense. But after you started talking, they suddenly relaxed. There's only one reason: you were lying."

Subconscious micro-expressions didn't lie.

And the story about the treasure was a joke. If he really knew about a treasure, he'd keep it to himself and find a way to get it. Why would he tell anyone else?

"The organization's name you gave is probably fake too. Doesn't matter if you don't tell me. I'll find out. And this syringe." Pearl shook it.

When she injected it, she didn't use all the drug, leaving a bit.

When the lab analyzed it, she'd know what they were up to.

"You're a vicious woman! Bitch, I curse you to die!" Lonnie completely lost it.

His last trick had been foiled by Pearl. Now he couldn't even stand and was at her mercy.

Pearl ignored him.

She'd rather stand here and be called ruthless than lie on the ground begging for mercy.

While waiting for the cops, she took a bag from her purse, wrapped the needle in several layers of tissue, and carefully placed it in the bag, making sure she wouldn't get pricked.
