Chapter 426 Impulse

She thought Oscar wasn't back yet.

She planned to drop off the belt and leave, but then she saw the scene.

Her face froze; she realized she came at the wrong time.

Seeing Pearl enter, Valentina seized the moment and confessed to Oscar, "If you don't mind, I can be your woman. Even if it's just as a nameless lover, I'm willing."

She was desperate for protection.

Oscar was the best choice.

In this war-torn place, they never knew when they might die.

If Oscar could take her to Tranquiloria, she and her child would be safe.

Even as just a lover among the Eldorians, it would be enough.

Oscar would surely send someone to protect her.

The Eldorians were nothing special; with the right backing, you were no longer just an ordinary citizen.

In times of civil strife, it was the common people who suffered the most.

When Oscar saw Pearl, he was stunned; he hadn't expected her to come at that moment.

He instinctively pulled his hand away from Valentina.

Pearl felt no need to stay; she hadn't even stepped inside. She said coldly, "Sorry, I come to deliver something. I'll leave once it's done."

She didn't go inside but hung the belt on the nearest rack.

"Pearl," Oscar called out.

Pearl didn't turn back; she quickened her pace.

On the surface, she appeared calm, but inside, she couldn't accept it and could only escape.

Oscar immediately wanted to chase her, not wanting her to misunderstand his relationship with Valentina.

Valentina, unwilling to give up, quickly grabbed his hand. "Mr. Brown!"

She looked at him with pleading eyes, hoping he would protect her again.

She thought she was special. But Oscar's expression turned cold, and he said, "I saved you out of respect for Isaac. If you don't know your place, you can leave immediately!"

His words were harsh.

Valentina's face turned pale; she hadn't expected such a heartless response from Oscar.

Oscar had kept Valentina in the troop because of Isaac, who was from Tranquiloria and had died in the war.

Isaac was overjoyed to meet them; he hadn't been home in ten years.

Isaac was happy to help them with language barriers, daily inconveniences, and even instances of soldiers being poisoned.

So, sending Valentina to a safe place was a debt of gratitude they owed.

But if Valentina had any inappropriate thoughts, it would only incur Oscar's disdain.

Because the only thing Isaac couldn't let go of before he died was her and Javier.

Valentina finally let go of his hand.

Oscar quickly chased after Pearl. "Pearl!"

Pearl quickened her pace, but she couldn't walk faster than Oscar; within seconds, he had grabbed her arm.

Pearl turned around, forcing a calm smile. "What is it, Mr. Brown?"

Oscar said, "It's not what you think."

"What do you mean by that?" Pearl replied coldly. "Isn't it just you and Valentina hugging? We're divorced; you're single. It doesn't matter. I have no right to interfere in your private life."

Oscar frowned but explained, "There's nothing between Valentina and me. She's just someone I rescued along the way."

Pearl let out a bitter laugh. "Yeah, I've heard it all before. There are so many distressed women here, and you just happened to save her. You must think she looks pretty good. But she has a child. If you get involved with her, you'll be a stepfather. But if you like it, nothing else matters!"

"I didn't know she would come into my tent," Oscar said. "But it's definitely not what you think. I saved her because her husband was from Tranquiloria and had helped us. That's all."

Pearl struggled to shake off his hand and said coldly, "Why are you explaining to me? We're already divorced. I'm not interested in your affairs!"

Oscar's hand grasped nothing but air.

In his urgency, he had forgotten they were already divorced.

He didn't want her to misunderstand and couldn't help but move closer to her.

But he had to restrain this impulse.

"Sorry," Oscar said softly. "I offended you."

Pearl pressed her lips together.

She didn't understand.

'What was he afraid of?'

She was the only one so angry.

"You should get some rest," Oscar said. "Don't stay up too late."

Pearl stared at him, wanting to see who would lose their composure first.

Seeing her not speak, Oscar could only remain silent and head back toward his tent.

Pearl just watched him leave. Why was he so hesitant?

This was not like him at all.

She would rather he be the old Oscar who completely ignored her.

At least he was his true self.

Now he was living so unrealistically.

In the end, it was Pearl who lost her composure. She shouted, "Oscar, are you even a man? Can you face me properly? You try to get my attention and then avoid me. What do you want? Ask yourself why you came to explain to me! The best thing for us is never to see each other again."

She practically screamed, trying to vent all the frustration she felt because of him.

She could feel his concern for her, but she also saw him retreat, not daring to take a step forward.

Wasn't he torturing her?

Pearl's eyes reddened, and her breathing became rapid.

With that, Oscar paused, his eyes deep and obscure like a tranquil lake.

Oscar, completely driven by emotion, took three steps back before turning around and quickening his pace towards Pearl.

Pearl was stunned.

She thought it was just her hysterical outburst, and Oscar would still calmly accept all her negative emotions without any reaction.

She watched Oscar approach, forgetting what she was supposed to do.

It wasn't until Oscar stood before her, slightly out of breath, his head bowed, that he cupped her face in his hands and kissed her deeply without a word.
