Chapter 413 Counterattack
Paloma, a girl with bronze skin in a brown dress, stood nearby, glaring.
Pearl smirked. "Trying to scare me?"
Throwing a mouse—so childish.
Paloma crossed her arms and walked up to Pearl. "No, I'm warning you! Stay away from Mr. Mitchell. Don't even think about seducing him!"
Paloma's English was just a bit better than the local kids'.
Pearl laughed. "You're wrong. I don't care about Mr. Mitchell."
"I don't believe you!" Paloma snapped, her face hostile. "You're not from here. You must have bad intentions!"
She got angrier. "You got close to Mr. Mitchell right away. If that's not seduction, what is?"
Pearl found it funny, but her smile made Paloma even madder.
As Paloma stepped forward to push Pearl, Pearl dodged and spotted a snake in the grass, which she knew was non-venomous. An idea hit her.
She grabbed the snake and tossed it at Paloma.
Paloma screamed, pointing at Pearl. "You're so mean. Just wait!"
She ran off crying.
Pearl went back to pulling weeds.
When Paloma threw the mouse, Pearl didn't plan to retaliate, but Paloma's insults and attack changed her mind.
She wasn't one to be bullied.
What Pearl didn't anticipate was Paloma's return, accompanied by villagers who had armed themselves with sticks, hoes, and sickles, swiftly encircling her.
Paloma pointed at her, shouting in Eldorians, "She seduced Mr. Mitchell and threw a snake at me. We can't keep such a vicious woman here!"
"Get out!" The villagers waved their tools.
Pearl wasn't scared, but before she could speak, Louis's voice cut through, "What's going on here?"
Louis pushed through the crowd.
The villagers pointed at Pearl. "Mr. Mitchell, we let her stay out of goodwill. But she has bad intentions. She threw a snake at Paloma!"
Another villager added, "That snake is the most hated creature here! We can't let her stay! We need to drive her out!"
Louis glanced at Pearl, who stood calmly.
"Has anyone asked why she threw the snake?" Louis's question turned the focus to Paloma. "Why were you at the school, and why did you two fight?"
Paloma lost her confidence.
Louis said quietly, "Everything has a reason. She's on the run. What good would it do her to be driven out for this?"
Outside, there were either allied troops or war zones.
The villagers started to see the problem.
Pearl seized the moment. "Thanks to Juan for letting me stay. I came to help and earn some food. I just talked to Mr. Mitchell and got accused of seducing him. I'm innocent. She threw a mouse at me and tried to hit me. Why can't I defend myself?"
Paloma was speechless.
The villagers, realizing the truth, started scolding Paloma and apologizing to Pearl. "We're sorry, we misunderstood and almost hurt you."
"Please don't hold it against us. You can stay here if you want."
"Paloma, admit your mistake and apologize," the villagers said in Eldorians, which Pearl half-understood.
Paloma was reluctant.
She liked Louis but was too scared to confess. Now, with Pearl exposing her, she didn't know how to face him. Being lectured by everyone made her want to disappear. She couldn't bring herself to apologize.
Louis's gaze was cold. "Paloma, apologize to Pearl."
Paloma's heart sank. Louis's tone left no room for argument.
She lowered her head and walked to Pearl. "I'm sorry. It was my fault. I apologize and hope you can forgive me."
"I hope this doesn't happen again. I just want to live peacefully," Pearl said calmly.
"Okay." Paloma lowered her head, her nails digging into her palms.
She wouldn't forget this day.
Louis looked around and said, "Starting tomorrow, Pearl will be teaching the children."
"Okay, Mr. Mitchell. Don't worry. We'll make sure the kids listen to Pearl."
The villagers all assured Louis.
The drama ended.
Pearl knew that without Louis, the villagers wouldn't have believed her.
She said, "Thank you, Mr. Mitchell."
"It's okay. But you're brave to catch a snake with your bare hands." Louis noted Pearl's calmness.
"She bullied me, so I couldn't just sit there, right? Besides, it was a non-venomous snake."
If it had been venomous, she wouldn't have dared.
Louis nodded, a faint smile on his lips.
That night, Pearl's phone was fully charged.
She turned it on but had a weak signal.
Messages couldn't be sent, and calls couldn't be made.
She went outside to try again, but no luck.
Juan saw her with her phone and said, "Don't bother. The only signal tower around was bombed and hasn't been fixed."
Pearl felt frustrated.
Before this, she was either in a place with no signal or her phone was out of battery. Now she was in a safe village, but still no signal!
Juan added, "Don't go out at night. The allied troops aren't friendly. It's safer during the day, but at night, it's risky."
He sensed the village was being watched.
