Chapter 908 I Didn't Mean for You to Hurt Yourself

The researcher wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking at Jeffery with a mix of fear and hesitation. After a long struggle, he finally chose to compromise. Only then were they able to see the patient.

As the researcher hurried away, Lyra turned to Jeffery. "You mentioned Dr. Larson and Dr. Adams earlier. Who are they?"

Jeffery explained calmly, "Ruben, the guy you just met, is a dual-specialty doctor with a ton of overseas training. Dr. Adams is a big deal in the medical world; he's given lectures at Cambridge and other top places."

"Ruben is his last and most important student."

Lyra's heart raced. "You mean Orion Adams, Dr. Adams?"

Jeffery glanced at her. "Yeah, that's him. Are you his fan?"

Realizing she might have been too excited, Lyra wondered if Jeffery had some history with this mentor-student duo, given the earlier tension.

As she pondered, Jeffery turned away, seemingly indifferent. "It's normal to admire him. He's pretty famous."

He took a few steps ahead, widening the distance between them. He seemed upset.

But Lyra wondered if it was just her imagination. Jeffery didn't seem like the type to get upset over a few words. Besides, she hadn't said anything offensive. Why would he be unhappy?

Shaking off her thoughts, she followed him.

Even though she had observed the patient through the monitor, seeing him in person was still a shock. The young man, probably around eighteen or nineteen, sat quietly on the bed.

His skin was pale, almost bloodless, and his eyelashes and hair were white. He looked like a snow elf.

"Are you... an albino?" Lyra asked.

The young man looked at her, and Lyra quickly waved her hands. "I didn't mean to offend! It's just that you're so beautiful, I couldn't help but ask."

The young man was momentarily stunned, then put down his book with an elegant gesture, like a true elf. He smiled slightly. "Thank you. You're the second person to say that."

Lyra was surprised. "Who was the first?"

She expected it to be a friend or someone close to him, but he slowly looked at Jeffery standing beside her.

"Mr. Gray," the young man answered.

Lyra was taken aback.

Jeffery stepped forward to draw the young man's blood. His chiseled features were serious, but his actions were gentle.

For the first time, Lyra saw the softness beneath his cold exterior.

The young man hadn't had his blood drawn recently, and the results they had were from a long time ago. When the new results came in, Jeffery's brows furrowed deeply.

The young man saw this and smiled bitterly. "Is it worse?"

"Yeah, the cell division is too fast to control," Jeffery said, rubbing his temples—a habitual gesture he made when faced with difficult or exhausting situations. Clearly, this was both.

With the surgery looming and the situation looking grim, it was bad news for both the patient and the doctors.

There was no immediate threat to life, but those people wouldn't give up on using him for research.

Sensing the tense atmosphere, Lyra tried to lighten the mood. " There's always a way. Don't lose hope. You've lived with albinism for so many years; you'll get through this, too. Think about your classmates and family."

The young man smiled again. "Do you know how old I am?"

Lyra was taken aback.

Though unsure why he asked, she guessed, "Twenty?"

The young man, who looked no older than eighteen, smiled more deeply. "I'm thirty-five."

He explained that he was the CEO of a listed company. Because he was over thirty and didn't age, he wanted to find a cure. He couldn't live like this forever, not knowing if he would turn into a monster.

Lyra felt dazed. He didn't look thirty-five at all. He looked like a high school student!

Leaving the research facility, Lyra felt heavy-hearted. The situation was more severe than she had imagined.

"The surgery has been rescheduled for two weeks from now," Jeffery said, putting down his phone, his eyes cold and distant.

Lyra knew he had been on his phone since earlier. "Did you manage to get that time?"

Jeffery didn't deny it. But he could only buy them that much time.

Originally, the surgery was scheduled for a few days later. This surgery was crucial. Officially, it was a surgery, but behind the scenes, it was a battle between Jeffery and those people.

If successful, they would let him go. They couldn't really do anything drastic. If it failed, they would keep him under close watch, hoping to find a better solution.

Hearing this from Jeffery, Lyra was furious. "They just want to keep him here!"

But it was true. Because of his condition, he could no longer serve as CEO. The surrounding rumors were increasing.

All this was immense pressure for someone who just wanted to be normal.

Lyra said nothing more, but silently vowed to find a solution.

Back home, Lyra worked even harder, poring over medical records and test results, and gathering information from the internet and hospitals. She found the first case.

The first case was a girl from abroad who had died many years ago, but her cells and tissues were still growing because they had been collected.

It was terrifying. The albino patient's condition was better than hers, both in terms of cell division speed and the people helping him.

But Lyra neglected her own health. She worked tirelessly, and one day, she fainted from low blood sugar and anemia.

When she woke up, Jeffery was standing in front of her, taking all the documents from her hands. "You need to rest for two days. I gave you this opportunity, not for you to harm yourself."
