Chapter 741 Mutual Care
Pearl totally got where Louis and Jimena were coming from. She knew this was super personal for them.
It was their lives, after all, and they had to make the call. As a sister, all Pearl could do was be there for them when they were feeling down.
After a quick chat, Pearl broke the news to Louis about RavenWing. "Dad's got liver cancer. It's pretty far along."
"What? How did this happen?" Louis was in shock.
RavenWing seemed fine when he left the country, and now, out of nowhere, he was in the late stages of liver cancer. Pearl wished it wasn't true, but the hospital's report was clear as day.
"Dad wanted to skip treatment, just take some meds and avoid chemo. I finally convinced him to change his mind," Pearl said, hoping Louis would come to see RavenWing.
RavenWing might not say it, but he definitely missed Louis.
But given Louis's current situation, Pearl couldn't push it.
Hearing this, Louis said, "Please take care of him for a few days. I'll finish up my work ASAP and come over."
"You focus on your work. His condition is stable for now. I talked to the doctor, and as long as Dad sticks to the treatment plan, things should look up," Pearl reassured him.
After hanging up, Louis spent half an hour wrapping up his paperwork, then drove to the hospital. Meanwhile, Jimena stood alone by the window, watching the kids play below, tears streaming down her face.
"Jimena, I brought your favorite fruit," Louis said as he walked in.
He put the fruit on the table, then got out two clean containers, carefully washing and cutting the fruit.
Hearing him, Jimena walked over. Looking at the fruit, she didn't feel hungry. She said, "You have so much going on. Now that you're finally here, let's just sit and talk."
She felt bad, and Louis felt the same.
He had to juggle his work, run around, and still make time to see and care for her.
How could Jimena let him do all this?
"It's just cutting some fruit. It's no big deal. Let's eat together," Louis said, handing her a fork.
With him by her side, Jimena felt a bit better and ate a few pieces of mango.
"I plan to finish my work in the next couple of days and then go back to see Dad. He's in the late stage of liver cancer. Even with treatment, he might not have much time left," Louis brought up the topic.
Hearing this, Jimena had been thinking the same.
Even if a late-stage cancer patient could live longer, how long would that be?
As his kids, they should make more of an effort to visit RavenWing.
"But you have so much work, and it'll take several days to go back. What about your duties during that time?" Jimena voiced her concerns.Louis brushed her hair aside and said, "With all the tech we have now, we can handle things through video calls. We're mainly swamped because of the recent natural disaster. Once that's sorted, it won't be as crazy."
Though he wouldn't be completely free, it wouldn't be as overwhelming.
Hearing this, Jimena didn't say anything more.
She lowered her head, feeling a wave of sadness.
She had hoped to rest and do some prenatal education for the baby, but that wish seemed impossible now.
"Jimena? What's on your mind?" Louis noticed her mood and asked.
Jimena shook her head and replied, "Nothing. You go ahead. I'll be fine on my own."
Jimena didn't want to cry in front of Louis and add to his burden.
Once he left, she could cry freely.
"I'll stay with you a bit longer. I'm not too busy today," Louis insisted.
As a married couple who were even expecting a child, they knew each other inside and out.
Louis could tell Jimena had something on her mind, likely related to the baby.
He couldn't ease her physical pain, but he could offer comfort.
Jimena could tell he was trying to cheer her up. "I just want to sleep for a bit. You don't need to stay. Do you think I'd lie to you?" she said.
"I'm just worried you'll keep everything inside and hurt yourself. Talk to me, and you'll feel better," Louis said, holding her close.
At this, Jimena leaned on his shoulder.
Looking into his eyes, she noticed his concern. He truly cared for her.
"Louis," she said, "With you here, I'm not sad. I believe our baby will come back to us."
At that moment, she felt a sense of relief.
Losing a child was painful, but she couldn't live in sorrow forever. They had to move forward.
She had Louis, and that was enough. Besides, she believed that the child wouldn't want them to be stuck in sadness forever.
Louis nodded at her words, believing their child would return.
"If you're staying, let's rest together. I didn't sleep well last night and need a nap," Jimena said, taking off her top to reveal a tank top underneath.
She pulled Louis down, and they lay together, holding each other and breathing in each other's scent.
Soon, they both fell into a deep sleep.
It was the best sleep they'd had in days.
When Louis woke up, it was already evening.
"Louis, you're awake?" Jimena mumbled, trying to sit up, but Louis stopped her.
He said, "Sleep a bit more. I have to go. I'll see you tomorrow. Rest well, and when we go back, I'll need your help with my dad if I have video meetings."
Pearl had two kids, and Emily was just a few months old, needing constant care.
And Oscar was as busy as he was.
So Jimena would be the only one with some free time.
"Alright, make sure to get to bed early tonight, and don't stay up too late," Jimena said as she turned over, burying her head in the blanket and quickly falling back asleep.
Then Louis left quietly, turning off the lights and gently closing the door behind him.
