Chapter 721 The Truth Revealed
Desiree wasn't just laughing at Daryl; she was laughing at herself for trusting the wrong people over and over again. She said, "Trust isn't something others give you; you earn it yourself. You should go. Don't beg people so easily. Seriously, don't do this."
"Desiree!" Daryl reached out again, grabbing the hem of her coat tightly. He held on so tight, not daring to relax even a bit. He was scared that if he let go, he'd lose Desiree forever. And that loss would be permanent.
"Go back. From now on, you have your life, and I have mine. I made it clear before; we can't even be friends." With that, Desiree just took off her coat.
And all Daryl had in his hand was a coat, nothing else. He watched as Desiree walked away with her parents.
During this time, Tessa turned her head several times, wanting to say something but ultimately saying nothing. She quickened her pace and disappeared from Daryl's sight.
After getting home, Desiree didn't talk about Daryl but instead brought up the company. "I want to start working at the company this afternoon. Have you set up a position for me?"
"There's no need to rush. Take a couple of days to rest at home," Liam said. He had everything arranged, but when it was time for Desiree to join the company, he started to feel sorry for her.
Right now, Desiree enjoyed a great deal of freedom, but once she joined the company, she'd have to clock in every day like other employees and couldn't just take time off whenever she wanted.
Liam thought it would be better to let her have a few more days of fun before starting work.
"Dad, you have gray hair." Desiree reached out to pluck the gray hair from his head.
Liam chuckled and responded, "Just a few strands. I saw them when I looked in the mirror. It's normal for someone my age to have gray hair."
"No, it's not. If you take good care of yourself, your hair should still be blonde at your age. I know you're worried about me, but I can't live under your protection forever. It's time for me to take care of you." Desiree's voice was gentle but firm.
Under her strong insistence, Liam didn't object anymore.
After lunch, Desiree found the oldest car in the garage and drove to the company. Liam had already instructed the manager not to reveal her identity, so she would be treated like any other intern.
The supervisor, who had been working for three years, showed her around the company and then forwarded a few files to her computer. "Ursa Sandvik, your task this afternoon is to format these documents and send them to me."
"Okay, I'll get started right away." Ursa, or Desiree, sat at her desk and began working.
She didn't want to use her real name at the company, so she chose a pseudonym.
The afternoon was busy but fulfilling. After finishing the documents, the supervisor gave her a few more tasks, all of which Desiree completed successfully.
She even stayed late with everyone else before driving back to her apartment.
That night, Daryl did not knock on her door, and no one was waiting downstairs. She slept very well.
The next morning, she quickly got ready and went to the company to continue working. Since it was her family's company, she took on additional tasks in addition to her main job.
Desiree crushed it in just one week, and her go-getter attitude got the supervisor's nod of approval. The supervisor said, "We've got a client meeting tomorrow. Come with me."
"Meeting a client? Can I really do that?" Desiree's eyes lit up.
She had worked as a secretary for Oscar before, so she knew she could handle meeting clients on her own. But she had only been at her family's company for a week and hadn't even finished her internship. Getting to meet clients so soon showed the supervisor really believed in her.
"Of course. I've seen your skills and attitude. Honestly, I think you're better than me. You can definitely meet clients." The supervisor was all in.
There was a lot to prep before the client meeting, and the supervisor sent all the project materials to Desiree's email. It had been a while since Desiree checked her email.
Besides the files from the supervisor, she saw an email from Harold. She was about to delete it, but her hand slipped, and she accidentally opened it. Since it was already open, she figured she might as well see what he had to say.
With that thought, Desiree read the email carefully from start to finish, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw the last part. So the person who was with her that night was Harold?
Then what was Daryl's statement all about?
Filled with confusion, Desiree wanted to remove Harold from her blacklist, but before she could act, Liam called her to his office. When she opened the door, she saw an angry Liam.
She asked, "Dad, what happened to make you so mad?" Desiree walked behind him and started massaging his shoulders. "Don't be mad. I'll cook a big dinner for you and Mom tonight."
"Your mom and I were really out of our minds, deceived by a junior. Thank goodness you didn't end up with that Fields guy. Otherwise, it would have been one disaster after another." Liam was so furious at the mention of Daryl that he wouldn't even say his name, referring to him only as "Fields."
Desiree was puzzled until she saw him throw a stack of documents on the table. "This is what I've found out recently. Take a look at how many 'good deeds' he's done behind our backs."
Desiree picked up the documents and read them, growing more shocked with each page.
Daryl had not only been stalking her but had also played a part in the online smear campaign against her. He had been causing her trouble while pretending to care and help her solve problems.
All this scheming was just to make Desiree think she owed him a big favor and then be with him because of it. It was all so calculated.
"This is infuriating. From now on, I don't care about social status when you choose a partner. As long as the guy has good character, that's all that matters. These well-off but scheming types are the worst. Thank goodness you didn't marry him. If you had, it would have been a nightmare." Liam continued to rant.
Desiree initially tried to comfort him, but soon she felt increasingly dizzy and had to hold onto the table for support. Then, her vision blurred, and she collapsed to the floor with a thud, causing Liam to hurriedly look up.
