Chapter 676 Beyond Control
"It's not happening. She's the only wife I'll ever have. I won't even look at another woman," Harold said firmly.
He figured that by saying this, even if Wesley and Ember stayed stubborn, Isolde would change her mind to some extent.
But he was wrong.
Isolde's eyes were locked on him. "Harold, I don't care if you can't forget her right now. We're young, we've got time. I believe you'll come around. And honestly, it's good you can't forget her. It shows you're loyal. Once you accept me, you'll treat me the same way, and we'll have a great life together."
Wesley and Ember were really feeling Isolde's words. Ember held Isolde's hand, feeling more and more pleased with her.
Even though Desiree was from the Sandvik family, the Lewis family wasn't so broke that they needed to sell Harold's marriage for money.
Ember just wanted Harold to find a wife who truly loved him, so they could have a stable life together.
As for Desiree, who was so reckless now, it wasn't even clear if the child she lost was Harold's or not.
Luckily, it was a miscarriage. Otherwise, if the child had been born, Harold would have ended up raising someone else's kid for life!
As a mother, Ember couldn't let that happen.
"Now that the child is gone, you two should just get divorced. It's better this way, without any burden," Ember said, sharing her thoughts.
She didn't realize this was the last straw for Harold.
He was livid. "What do you mean by burden? That was my first child, the one I longed for. I even had a name picked out and had prepared so much for the baby. Now, there's nothing left. Do you know how much pain I'm in?"
He didn't expect Wesley and Ember to understand his pain. But at least they shouldn't make it worse by calling the child a burden.
Just moments ago, he had desperately hoped Desiree would stay. Now, he was relieved she had left. If she had heard these words, she would have been devastated.
And she would have completely hated him, which would have killed any chance for their relationship in the future.
"Can you guarantee that child was yours? Do you know why Desiree came to you? But I know it very well. She just wanted you to be the father of her child," Ember said, not holding back.
This time, Natalia spoke up. She was about the same age as Ember and also had a son. She had become a grandmother the year before.
She couldn't stand Ember's words. "Mrs. Desiree Lewis is a good person. She's not a loose woman."
"Is it your place to speak?" Ember snapped back.
She instinctively lumped Natalia in with Desiree.
Natalia was just someone Desiree had hired to help deceive Harold.
It was understandable to take money and do the job for Desiree.
But watching Harold get deceived was something Ember, as a mom, just couldn't stand.
"It's not your place to speak either. It's my fault for being soft-hearted and hoping you'd understand me. Now I've lost my child, and you want me to lose Desiree forever," Harold said with a bitter smile.
If he kept listening to Wesley and Ember, he'd be a real fool.
He wasn't going to let them hurt him and Desiree again.
"Natalia, show them out," Harold said.
"Harold! I'm your mother. How can you just kick me out?" Ember's face twisted in anger.
Isolde's eyes filled with tears as she played the victim. "If you don't want to see me, I'll leave. But don't take it out on your parents. They really love you and care about you. Otherwise, they wouldn't interfere in your life."
Harold had never denied this before, but ever since he drank that drugged tea, he had changed his mind.
They loved him, sure, but not enough. More than love, they wanted to control his life.
Otherwise, how could they do this to him?
"Natalia, I said show them out," Harold repeated before turning and heading back inside. Only Natalia was left to face the three of them.
She took a few steps forward. "Please, you should leave."
"Natalia, how much does Desiree pay you each month?" Wesley, who had been quiet, finally spoke.
He saw clearly that Harold trusted Natalia. Even his own parents couldn't compare to her in his heart.
So if they could buy off Natalia and have her help bring Harold and Isolde together, wouldn't that solve everything?
"My salary is paid by Mr. Lewis. The amount doesn't matter. I have one principle: I must be true to my conscience in my work," Natalia said firmly.
Ember wanted to say more, but Isolde shook her head at her.
On the way back, Wesley drove while Ember and Isolde sat in the back seat.
Ember spent the whole time wiping her tears. "I don't know how that woman bewitched him, making him like this. Even we can't compare to Natalia in his eyes."
If word got out, wouldn't their friends and family laugh at them?
She really regretted not drugging Harold before he married Desiree. If she had, they wouldn't have even gotten married, which would have been better than this.
"Mrs. Lewis, don't worry. We shouldn't push him too hard, which will only backfire," Isolde gently advised.
She didn't just want Harold, she wanted his love.
If it was just an empty marriage, Desiree could come back and take Harold away at any time, and she wouldn't let that happen.
"Yes, I understand, but seeing him entangled with that woman, I just can't help it." Ember sighed.
She thought to herself, 'Harold has grown up and doesn't listen to me anymore. But with the drug being so strong just now, there's no way nothing happened between Harold and Isolde, right?'
Ember asked Isolde, "It's just us in the car. Tell me the truth, did anything happen between you two?"
