Chapter 488 You Are Like a Mom

Christopher nodded and took the sweet potato, eating it slowly. Pearl poured him a glass of water.

"If you need more, just let me know."

Christopher shook his head.

Pearl knew he wasn't much of a talker.

She couldn't just watch him eat, so she started tidying up the tent. Suddenly, the assembly call sounded.

Something was up in the army.

To her surprise, Christopher put down the sweet potato, stood straight, and saluted her.

Pearl was stunned.

'He's only five, but he does this so well. Could he be a soldier's kid?'

Pearl decided to contact the embassy.

If he was a martyr's descendant, they couldn't leave him stranded in a foreign land.

"Christopher, you're not a soldier, but you know this stuff. Do you remember who taught you?"

Pearl pulled Christopher over and squatted in front of him.

Christopher looked at her silently but noticed her eyes shining like stars.

"Grandpa," he said. Pearl understood.

It seemed his grandfather had passed away; otherwise, he wouldn't be wandering around in such a state.

"You should rest now. I need to go out. Don't wander off while I'm gone." Pearl patted his head.

Christopher nodded obediently.

Pearl headed to the embassy first.

She reported to Raymond, "The kid you asked me to look after is named Christopher. He hasn't seen his parents, but he stood at attention when he heard the assembly call. He said his grandfather taught him. He might be a soldier's descendant. Can you get someone to talk to him soon for a better future?"

The embassy would investigate and give Christopher an answer.

Pearl's findings could be important.

But the embassy couldn't just take her word for it. Raymond said, "It won't be quick. It takes at least three days. Meanwhile, talk to Christopher. He seems to trust you. Try to get more info from him."

"I'll do my best," Pearl replied.

She couldn't promise anything, but she couldn't just walk away.

After leaving the embassy, Pearl went to the market.

Due to the war, the market was in an underground bomb shelter. It was hot, stuffy, and crowded, and it took over two hours to get there.

She bought two sets of clothes for Christopher and some food.

By the time she got back to the army, it was already 8 PM.

From a distance, she saw Christopher standing at the tent entrance. When he saw her, he ran towards her quickly.

He didn't say anything but hugged her tightly.

Pearl didn't expect Christopher to get so attached to her.

She was just helping because the army found him first, and he was a poor kid from Tranquiloria.

"Let's go inside the tent. I got you some things."

She had bought stuff for Christopher and also some food and medicine for the army.

She often helped the poor and injured, bringing them supplies and extra food, which everyone knew.

Christopher held her hand tightly, his palm sweaty.

"Check out these outfits. Do you like them?"

Pearl showed him the clothes. Because of the war, white clothes weren't practical, so she got a camouflage set and a sky-blue set.

The distance was too far, and she couldn't carry much. Once she sent Christopher to the embassy and they found out his identity, she'd leave more things for him.

Christopher didn't even look at the clothes; his eyes were red and filled with fear.

Pearl hugged him. "Don't be scared. These are all Tranquiloria soldiers. They won't treat you as an enemy. I won't break my promise. Try on your clothes."

She helped him put on the clothes. Christopher didn't speak but cooperated.

Pearl placed him on the camp bed. "From now on, when I go out, don't wait for me outside. It's dangerous. If you hear any noise, hide under the table or bed, okay?"

Even with a temporary ceasefire, war could break out anytime. If something happened, she was afraid Christopher would be scared, and it would be too late.

Christopher held her hand tightly.

He shook his head. He wasn't afraid of the war but was more afraid of not seeing Pearl.

He didn't like talking to or interacting with others, but Pearl made him feel special.

Especially when she hugged him, hearing her heartbeat made him feel at ease.

He didn't want to lose Pearl and wanted to stay with her forever.

Pearl patted his shoulder. "As long as you're with me, I won't break my promise."

Christopher's eyes showed panic. "No, don't leave me. I want to stay with you forever, please."

His voice was slow and hoarse.

Pearl couldn't bear it.

She stroked his head. "Let's see what the embassy says."

If Christopher had any family left, she'd send him to them. If not, and if he wanted to stay with her, she wouldn't refuse.

"I don't have family. You are like a mom."

His voice was hoarse, like something was stuck in his throat, making it hard to speak. His eyes were bloodshot.

What he said deeply touched Pearl's heart. Barbara once told her that her child was still alive, and she had been hoping ever since.

For five years, with no news of Oscar, she had erected a tombstone for him. And during her five years in Serenea, she had always been looking for her child.
