Chapter 274 He is Your Husband
Oscar stared at Pearl.
Feeling uneasy, Pearl asked, "Done swimming? I want to go out."
Oscar's eyes darkened. "Are you lying to me?"
Pearl's heart skipped a beat, as if her body was constricted by a thread, making her unable to move freely. She looked up and stared into his eyes, "No."
Oscar frowned slightly, then let her go. "You lied once. Don't do it again."
Pearl stayed quiet. In their current situation, whether she lied or not was no longer important. Lying was her way of protecting herself now.
Oscar didn't push her. He directed her to the changing room where he had new clothes ready.
Pearl went in, and soon Nancy brought her a comfy tracksuit. "Ms. Harris, Mr. Brown asked me to bring this."
Pearl, soaked and her hair half-wet, was about to dry herself. "Alright, you can leave."
Nancy suggested, "Want to take a shower? It might help."
Pearl replied, "No need, I'll just use the hairdryer."
"Okay, I'll get it." Nancy left.
Pearl sat, drying her hair. She was about to change when the door opened. Thinking it was Nancy, she said, "Just leave it. I'll change first."
As she stood to remove her wet clothes, she heard a hairdryer. Then her hair was lifted, and the warm wind blew them apart. Turning, she saw Oscar drying her hair.
She was stunned.
Oscar's fingers brushed through her hair. "Is this temperature okay?"
Pearl snapped back. Under the light, Oscar looked flawless, his damp hair and tracksuit making him seem less severe, even tender.
She thought, 'What am I thinking? Men are the best actors!'
She looked away. "I can do it myself."
She reached for the hairdryer, but Oscar raised his hand. "Change your clothes first."
Pearl hesitated, seeing the tracksuit identical to his. Oscar's voice turned cold. "If you don't change, you'll catch a cold. Don't make me force you."
His tone implied he'd undress her if she refused.
Pearl reluctantly took the tracksuit to change.
She entered a private changing room.
Meanwhile, Oscar's phone rang.
He stepped out, answering coolly, "Investigate that man named Magee in the military."
"Another investigation? In the military?"
Oscar was thorough. "Start there. Pearl might have lied, but we can't overlook anything. We must find Magee!"
"Oscar, what are you worried about?"
Oscar paused, clenching his hand, frowning. "I'm worried she'll be deceived."
"She's not a child. How could she be deceived? Maybe they're in love."
Oscar sneered, "Have you ever seen such love?"
The other person fell silent.
After all, they were adults and should be responsible for themselves. It wasn't that easy to be deceived.
He thought Oscar was overreacting, but on second thought, worry can cloud judgment, and Oscar's concerns weren't entirely baseless.
Oscar drew back the curtains and looked outside, deep in thought. "She hasn't interacted with many men. What if someone deceives her with a few sweet words? It's possible."
Anything could happen. He couldn't let his guard down.
After hanging up, Oscar returned to the changing room.
Pearl had already come out. Seeing Oscar, she reached for the hairdryer. "I'll do it myself."
Oscar didn't insist but watched her. "I have something to attend to later. You can come back next time."
"Alright." Pearl dried her hair with her back to him, avoiding eye contact.
After drying her hair, Pearl walked out with Oscar.
"Pearl!"
Emma had been waiting outside for a while and finally saw them come out.
Seeing them in matching tracksuits, like a couple's outfit, she was stunned. Then she realized it was Oscar, which shocked her even more.
"How could it be Mr. Brown!" Emma covered her mouth.
She looked at Pearl, excited. "Pearl, you mentioned it before, but seeing it today, you really are married! Mr. Brown is really your husband!"
Emma was thrilled. She had a good relationship with Pearl, which gave her a rare chance to meet Oscar.
With Oscar as Pearl's husband, Pearl's career at Horizon Network would surely flourish, and Emma could benefit from her connection with Pearl.
Hearing this, Oscar's mood lifted. He walked forward, saying, "Hello."
Emma looked at the distinguished man before her, realizing it was indeed Oscar, and he was speaking to her. She had never imagined she would get to talk to Oscar.
It felt unreal.
She was both excited and happy. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Brown!"
"I'll have someone send you back later," Oscar said, looking at Pearl and then nodding at Emma before heading to the elevator.
Emma was still in a daze, but Pearl said, "Don't tell anyone about me and Oscar."
Emma grabbed Pearl's sleeve. "Why not? He's Oscar, your husband!"
Pearl replied, "I'm divorcing him."
Emma's expression turned to disappointment. She didn't understand. "Why? Everyone dreams of marrying into a wealthy family. He's so rich and handsome. Finding a man like him in Willow Creek is harder than finding a needle in a haystack."
Pearl looked at Emma. "But if you were in my position, you'd feel it's all the same."
"Really?"
"Yes."
The sorrows of humanity are never shared.
Emma and Pearl had just left HarborView Holdings Group when they received a new assignment from their department.
Pearl saw the message; it was a task assigned to her. She put away her phone and said to Emma, "A reporter on the way to the runway show had a car accident. There's no one available to replace them, and since we're heading in that direction, the TV station wants us to go there quickly."
"Alright, let's go then," Emma said enthusiastically.
Pearl and Emma hurried to the runway show.
Many celebrities and models were there. They weren't too late and still had seats available.
When they arrived, the photographer was already there.
"Ms. Harris, hurry up, don't miss the best spot."
The photographer had also rushed over from the accident scene.
"Alright."
