Chapter 284 The Chase
Barbara tensed up. "Ms. Harris, what are you implying? Are you doubting my skills?"
Pearl gripped Barbara's hand tightly. "A real doctor wouldn't have long nails and smell so fragrant. How can you be a doctor?"
Barbara felt a twinge of guilt and quickly pulled her hand back.
Seizing the moment, Pearl dashed for the door.
Barbara lunged to stop her. "Where do you think you're going?"
Barbara grabbed Pearl by the hair at the door.
With swift, brutal moves, Pearl, aware of Barbara's martial arts training, knew she couldn't escape.
"Help!" she shouted, but Barbara choked her and injected her with a needle.
Barbara used the same syringe she had used to draw blood earlier.
Pearl winced, gripping her thigh as her consciousness blurred.
Seeing Pearl calm down, Barbara relaxed and let her collapse to the ground.
Pearl looked at Barbara and realized she seemed familiar. The driver and the doctor were the same person. But there was something more than that.
Barbara smirked. "If you hadn't figured it out, you wouldn't be in this mess. You can't blame me."
The drug worked fast, making Pearl lose consciousness.
Pearl fought to stay awake, digging her nails into her flesh and the pain helped.
"Stop struggling," Barbara said. "The drug works quickly."
Barbara lifted Pearl, placed her under a cart, and covered her with a white cloth.
After everything was set, Barbara opened the door. There were still people waiting outside.
She lowered her head and pushed the cart out.
Janetta was still waiting outside, unaware of what had happened inside.
Barbara took the cart down in the elevator.
Janetta checked the time and realized Pearl had been inside too long, which was unusual.
She couldn't wait any longer. Remembering Pearl's previous kidnapping, she quickly checked the consultation room.
When she opened the door, no one was inside.
Janetta's face changed. She found the doctor unconscious behind the counter.
She quickly woke the doctor. "Wake up! Where's Pearl?"
The doctor gradually woke up, eyes wide, shouting, "Help, someone attacked me!"
Janetta understood. The doctor had been knocked out, and someone had impersonated the doctor to take Pearl.
Frantic, Janetta called the police. "911? I need to report a kidnapping!"
Meanwhile, in the underground parking garage, Barbara discarded her disguise—mask, white coat, and hat. Her red hair fell loosely around her shoulders.
She took Pearl out of the cart and stuffed her into the trunk.
Pearl, barely conscious, grabbed Barbara's pants.
Barbara pried her hand open and shut the trunk, plunging Pearl into darkness.
In the confined space, Pearl felt terrified.
Her consciousness was blurry, but her heart grew colder. She felt like she was suffocating and wanted to take deep breaths but lacked the strength. Even a sliver of light would have helped.
'When will this end?' Pearl wondered, feeling a sense of déjà vu.
'When will it end? When will I see the sunlight?' Pearl closed her eyes, memories flashing like a movie.
The cries of many girls, her own despair, and screams.
Warm hands held her, whispering, "Don't be afraid, I'll get you out."
Then cold hands held her, asking, "Have you ever seen the sunlight? What does it feel like?"
In that dark house, she couldn't see their faces, only hear their voices.
"Carol, I'll show you the sunlight."
"Haley!"
Pearl suddenly opened her eyes in terror, gasping for breath. Her hands clenched tightly, and she was drenched in cold sweat. She realized she was still in the small, dark space.
She trembled, holding her head, and screamed, "No!"
The car screeched to a halt.
Pearl's scream reached Barbara, who instinctively stopped the car.
She thought she had misheard.
"Did you hear that?" Barbara asked.
"It sounded like it. Could she be awake?" her assistant Patrick Nelson said.
Patrick was tall and thin, with an ordinary appearance and dark skin, speaking awkward English.
"Impossible." Barbara didn't believe it. "I gave her a heavy dose; she shouldn't wake up so soon!"
The car started moving slowly again, but suddenly, five military vehicles approached from the front.
Seeing this, Barbara realized something was wrong and said, "Quick, turn around!"
Patrick stepped on the gas, sharply turned the wheel, and drove in the opposite direction.
There was no one on the road except for their car and the five other vehicles.
She had to suspect they were here to rescue Pearl!
Having finally caught her, Barbara couldn't give up. If Pearl didn't die, she and Jeffery would.
"What's going on?" Patrick asked. "It's just one woman. Do they need so many people?"
They had never been this tense and excited during their previous crimes.
Barbara thought of Jeffery's indulgence. "Pearl might be special."
She didn't know much about Pearl.
She only knew Pearl was very special to Jeffery, but she didn't know the reason.
It was the first time she had seen Jeffery care so much about someone.
"They're getting closer. What do we do?" Patrick was flooring the gas pedal.
Barbara frowned. "You keep driving, I'll deal with them!"
She pulled out a gun from her waist.
Seeing this, Patrick reminded her, "Are you crazy? Those are five military vehicles. If you shoot, we'll be riddled with bullets!"
"We have no choice. We have to take her back!" They had to take a chance, even if it meant risking their lives.
Barbara opened the car door and fired a shot at the pursuing vehicles.
The military vehicles were bulletproof and sustained minimal damage.
Then, several shots were fired at their car windows.
Patrick said, "We can't win against five vehicles. Call for backup!"
"I know, I already did."
Facing the situation, Barbara didn't dare to act rashly. She was just buying time.
Suddenly, a shot hit their car tire.
The car skidded and almost flipped over, but Patrick's driving skills kept it steady.
"What do we do?" the assistant asked.
Barbara had to take a gamble, gripping the handle. "Drive, keep going fast!"
The military vehicles followed closely behind.
"Oscar, we blew out one of their tires, and they still won't stop," said Elijah Wilson, who was wearing camouflage.
Oscar, sitting inside, looked ahead with a serious expression at the car in front.
These people were all Oscar's former battle buddies.
