Chapter 385 I Might Reconsider Our Relationship
"Yeah, Haley hasn't shown up at the company. She's missing."
The employees didn't seem to care much about her.
Pearl had planned to use her memory recovery to scare Haley into revealing something.
But the company said Haley hadn't been around for days, which was odd.
Pearl remembered Haley getting out of prison and attending an event.
Even though the event flopped and Haley's reputation tanked, it shouldn't have led to her disappearing. Maybe she was trying to create some buzz?
That was typical of her, and Pearl was suspicious.
But the company didn't know anything, so it probably wasn't just a publicity stunt.
Pearl asked, "Haley's missing, and she's still your employee. Aren't you going to report it to the police?"
"We're not her family. Company rules say we can't act without orders from the higher-ups to avoid hurting the company's image."
Pearl thought that was pretty heartless.
Oscar had founded the company for Haley. Now she was missing, and no one seemed to care.
At first, Pearl was thinking about how cold-hearted capitalists could be, but something felt off.
'Haley got out of prison and returned to the industry. No one knew she was out, so her reputation shouldn't have been affected. It was that report that hurt her. If the company wanted, they could have buried the report. But it seemed like Haley had been abandoned. No PR, getting attacked online, and the company wasn't helping. Oscar cared about Haley, so why wasn't he doing anything? Where was Haley?'
As she was thinking, someone called out, "Mr. Brown."
Oscar walked in, tall and imposing in the sunlight, but his face was cold and distant. His eyes were intense and authoritative.
Pearl instinctively avoided him since their relationship was strained.
This let her overhear Harold saying, "From now on, block all news about Haley. She doesn't exist. If anyone asks, say nothing."
Pearl was stunned.
"Yes, Mr. Lewis," everyone responded quickly, not daring to question.
The person who had just talked to Pearl looked panicked. She had just spoken, and now this order put her in a tough spot.
Pearl thought long and hard and concluded that Haley's disappearance was linked to Oscar.
She didn't think Oscar was hiding Haley for romantic reasons; it was unnecessary. This news was too sudden, so it could be imprisonment or something else.
Either way, it was illegal!
Oscar wouldn't do something like that, right?
Pearl started to panic. 'If things were that bad, wasn't Oscar risking everything?'
She even wondered if Haley's release from prison was part of Oscar's plan for revenge.
That would make sense.
Pearl's face grew more serious. Seeing Oscar and the others about to enter the elevator, she called out, "Oscar!"
Oscar's indifferent face showed a flicker of reaction as he turned toward her voice.
Sure enough, he saw Pearl.
Pearl quickly walked over, worried she'd miss him if he got in the elevator.
Seeing Oscar not moving, she felt relieved.
Harold greeted her, "Ms. Harris."
Pearl frowned, staring at Oscar.
Oscar didn't speak, but his eyes questioned why she was there.
Pearl stepped into the elevator and said, "You come in, the others stay out. I need to talk to him!"
Her tone was firm, and no one dared to enter except Oscar.
Oscar looked confused but followed her under her cold gaze.
The elevator ascended and opened on Oscar's exclusive floor.
Pearl walked toward the office, knowing Oscar would follow.
Once inside, she closed the door and confronted him, "Did you kidnap Haley?"
Oscar, trapped between the door and her, couldn't move and faced her intense gaze.
His eyes narrowed, and instead of answering, he stepped out of the confined space.
"Don't make wild accusations," Oscar said. "Do you have any proof that I did that?"
Pearl stepped in front of him and continued, "I heard everything. Are you planning to make Haley disappear? She's a public figure. How could she just vanish? What did you do? You're not just the CEO of the Brown Group. Are you planning to break the law? Don't do anything stupid!"
Pearl was anxious, speaking quickly. She didn't want Oscar to do anything illegal.
Oscar stared at her anxious expression, remaining silent for a long time, as if only she was worried.
Oscar seemed different now.
Pearl lost her patience and raised her voice. "Did you hear me?"
"I heard you," Oscar said, smirking. "But I don't think I did anything wrong. Pearl, you've made a lot of accusations, and you'll have to answer for them."
His tone and gaze made Pearl feel distant.
After a few days of not seeing him, he seemed like a different person.
If he really kidnapped Haley, she thought it was to take revenge for her.
There was no other reason she could think of.
If it was for her, she wouldn't feel good about it.
She also didn't want Oscar to go down the wrong path.
"Stop lying to me!" Pearl's eyes were almost red with urgency as she pleaded, "I know everything. Putting aside our differences, I truly don't want you to do something foolish, and I don't want you to gamble with your life!"
"You're worried about me?" Oscar narrowed his eyes, the smirk never leaving his lips as he moved closer.
Pearl tried to discuss the matter, but she sensed the atmosphere was off.
She was discussing the issue, but Oscar's mind was elsewhere.
As she looked up at him, she was caught off guard when his hand slid to her waist, his fingers tracing circles. He whispered in her ear with a strange tone, "Pearl, if you want to get close to me, you could find a better reason. Using Haley as an excuse is too far-fetched. Why don't you say you can't let me go and found an excuse to come back, so I would take you seriously? Maybe then I'd reconsider our relationship."
