Chapter 119 I Thought I Knew You
"I'm just concerned about you!" Beatrice said seriously. "Arthur is no match for Evans for real! Money is everything. Look at how glamorous Pearl is and how many people praise her. Once it's mentioned, you know how outstanding Pearl is. As for Isabelle, even if she marries an old man, as long as he's wealthy, she won't have to worry for the rest of her life!"
"Mom!" Olivia disagreed. "I'm not as materialistic as you. Everyone says I'm vulgar. I know who I resemble: it's you. You've turned me into this, and now you want Isabelle to follow my path!"
"How can you say that? What's wrong with being like me?" Beatrice said angrily.
Olivia, in an agitated state, exclaimed, "How am I doing now? My husband is dead, and look at me, what's good about any of this?"
"That's because you're useless," Beatrice blamed her, showing no sympathy.
"If I'm useless, then leave. Go find your son. Don't come looking for me, your daughter!" Olivia felt chilled to the bone, not understanding why Beatrice was so cruel.
Pearl heard everything at the door while she didn't speak, only knocking on the door when they calmed down.
Hearing the knock, Olivia, worried about being seen as a joke, suppressed her anger and spoke politely, "Please come in."
Pearl pushed the door and entered.
Olivia's expression turned unpleasant when she saw it was Pearl.
On the other hand, Beatrice stood up and warmly greeted her. "Oh, it's Pearl, come and sit down." She was very enthusiastic, asking, "Would you like some coffee? Let me pour you a cup."
Olivia was even more dissatisfied with Beatrice's behavior. Beatrice knew there was beef between her and Pearl, yet she still tried to please her. Beatrice clearly didn't care much about her own daughter.
Pearl couldn't bear this warmth and calmly said, "I don't drink coffee, I'm here to see Olivia."
Pearl's words made Beatrice say, "Alright, you talk to Olivia."
Beatrice then reminded Olivia, "Olivia, Pearl is your niece after all. There's no difference between her and your daughter. Speak nicely, don't ruin the relationship."
Beatrice also looked at Isabelle and said, "Stop crying. We're all family, and everything's fine."
Beatrice said everything.
Isabelle didn't want to lose face in front of Pearl, so she wiped her tears and remained silent.
"What are you here for?" Olivia, already upset, had a bad attitude.
Pearl sat down, her gaze shifting to the sexy Isabelle behind her, and said calmly, "Your daughter did something like that, shouldn't I have come?"
At these words, Olivia's expression darkened even more.
Isabelle turned pale, instinctively covering her chest, afraid of being seen.
"Are you here to mock me?" Olivia frowned at Pearl.
Pearl sat upright and said, "No, I have something to say."
"What?" Olivia's tone was cold.
Pearl looked around the room; every brick and tile was built by Arthur's hard work. She said, "The car Arthur drove was tampered with, causing an explosion that killed him. This is what the police said. I'm here to investigate the mastermind behind it."
Bringing up this matter hit Olivia's weak spot. She sternly said, "Don't talk to me about this. If it weren't for you, Arthur wouldn't have had that accident. You're the culprit!"
Pearl looked at Olivia, understanding her emotions. Olivia blamed her for everything, refusing to believe the truth. Pearl knew very well that this person had contact with them.
After Olivia vented her emotions, Pearl calmly asked, "There was another person at the scene where Arthur kidnapped me, a woman who didn't want to be recognized and altered her voice. You framed me. I know someone is scheming behind the scenes. There was another person present during the kidnapping. I suspect it's the same person. To find out who killed Arthur, I need your identification!"
"Nonsense, it's all nonsense, impossible!" Olivia refused to accept it. "You're just trying to justify yourself, trying to lessen your guilt!"
And she was unwilling to face reality. Arthur's kidnapping of Pearl led to this outcome, which Olivia couldn't accept. She blamed Pearl for everything, shifting the blame away from themselves.
Pearl concluded, "Think it over yourself. Is Arthur's death worth it? If you think his death isn't worth it, tell me who that woman is. I won't let her get away with it!"
Isabelle overheard this conversation, pondering Pearl's words, her face pale and her demeanor abnormal.
Pearl left.
Olivia, enraged, flipped the table.
Isabelle jumped in shock. "Mom, what are you doing?"
Olivia, with red eyes, said, "She said the person who killed your father is someone else. She's trying to clear herself, not thinking about us at all. They have ulterior motives!"
After speaking, Olivia burst into tears again.
Isabelle hugged Olivia. "Mom, don't be like this. Dad wouldn't want you to be like this."
The day of the burial arrived.
It started drizzling, and the atmosphere was heavy. Everyone wore black. Arthur was buried next to Isabelle's grandparents' tombstone.
Kittie and Evans stood together. Evans's eyes were slightly red but he remained silent. Only Olivia and Isabelle cried uncontrollably, clinging to Arthur's tombstone, unable to get up. No one was more grief-stricken than them.
Pearl also felt touched. After all, he was her uncle, and they say when someone dies, they're gone.
After the funeral, people began to leave.
Olivia and Isabelle were too distraught to stand. Out of courtesy, Pearl bid farewell to the mourners one by one.
After seeing off the last group, she suddenly felt a chill down her spine, sensing someone's gaze fixed on her.
The gut instinct always came on strong. Pearl looked around and indeed saw a figure standing by the roadside.
She wasn't holding an umbrella, just smirking as she stood there. Despite the drizzle making things blurry, she could see the challenging look in her eyes aimed at her face.
Pearl's expression turned ugly, instantly cooling down. How dare she come here!
She quickly walked over and called out, "Seraphina."
Seraphina looked at Pearl, smiling. "Pearl, what a coincidence to meet you here."
Her demeanor was indifferent, and Pearl asked coldly, "A coincidence? You didn't come here on purpose?"
"Pearl, what are you talking about? I don't get it." Seraphina pretended not to know, then looked at the crying people inside. "Pearl, are they crying because someone died? Is this person your relative?"
Seraphina's lips curled slightly, deliberately saying such things in front of Pearl.
Pearl clenched her fists, unable to resist slapping Seraphina across the face. "I underestimated you. I didn't realize you were so malicious!"
