Chapter 60 She Was Pregnant
She shouldn't hold on to any more expectations but rather reset their relationship to the starting point.
That was what she needed to do.
Oscar felt that everything was normal, yet at the same time, not quite right. As he looked at her pale face, he couldn't bring himself to interrogate her too much. Instead, he said, "Don't be so headstrong and run off alone next time. At the very least, bring your phone and bring someone along. That way, I can find you immediately if something happens."
Pearl gave a bitter smile. What was he playing at?
Was he pretending to care about her to make up for feeling guilty?
Should she play along with his act?
"I got it. I'll listen to you," Pearl answered meekly.
Oscar took a chair and sat across from her. His deep-set eyes scanned her several times, making sure she was otherwise okay.
He then asked, "Pearl, do you remember what happened the other night?"
Pearl asked uncertainly, "Which night?"
"The night I was out at a party and got drunk."
Oscar's tone was casual, but it put Pearl on edge.
Her gaze was fixed on Oscar, wondering why he would suddenly bring up the topic after so long. Did he know something? Or was he out to accuse her of something?
Pearl's hands clenched tightly, probing, "What about it?"
"That night, we haven't found the woman yet."
Pearl's hands relaxed. "You're still thinking about that?"
Oscar frowned. "Shouldn't I?"
Pearl quickly said, "No, it's nothing."
After this incident, Pearl was even more worried that Oscar was only using her and that he might suspect her.
If he found out it was her, the consequences would be unimaginable. She added, "When I went to the hotel that night to find you, it was indeed that woman who came out. No one else was there. If you suspect something, Mr. President, I don't know what to say."
"Don't you find that strange?" Oscar asked again.
Pearl was on edge again and scarcely dared to meet his gaze, afraid that a single look would unravel everything. "What's strange about it? Of course, you would know better, Mr. President. If it wasn't that woman, it's only natural to assume she must have run off by now. If you want to find her, I promise to do my duty and carry out a thorough investigation to meet your expectations."
She kept calling him "Mr. President," putting such a distance between them.
It was as if the fact that he had slept with another woman meant nothing to her.
Yet she was still willing to help him investigate.
This chilled Oscar, and he said with a cold tone, "I've had you looking into it for a while now, and you haven't turned up anything!"
Pearl offered a formal explanation, trying to absolve herself of any wrongdoing. "I thought President Oscar had forgotten about it, and with his busy workload, naturally, he might have neglected it. It's all my fault. I should have found her sooner."
Oscar's lips pursed, a displeasure settling in.
With her indifferent attitude, it was clear she had no personal stake in the matter.
"Uh-huh," Oscar replied coldly. "I'm giving you one month."
Pearl clenched and unclenched her fists, bewildered by his concern. "President Oscar, perhaps that woman doesn't care. Why are you so persistent?"
Had he not brought it up, she would've likely forgotten all about it.
Oscar's face was a picture of cold indifference, his icy gaze fixed on Pearl. "How do you know what that woman is thinking?"
His question instantly knotted Pearl's stomach, and she quickly explained, "If she saw any advantage with President Oscar, she would have shown up already. If she hasn’t, maybe she was just drunk and didn't want President Oscar to feel obligated."
"Pearl," Oscar called her name.
She looked up, "Yes?"
"The woman that night was you."
Pearl's body tensed, unable to react normally, but she managed a laugh. "President Oscar, you're quite the joker. I arrived at the scene the next day. I even had Queenie bring you clothes. If it had been me, you'd have noticed long ago. I wish it were me; we might even have a child by now."
Her casual demeanor made Oscar uncertain.
Yet, her nonchalance was unsettling. Despite being his wife, the thought of him sleeping with another woman seemed not to faze her.
He spoke with an icy tone, "Then go and figure it out!"
After speaking, Oscar left the hospital room.
Pearl's smile faded as soon as he was gone.
She plunged into self-doubt.
Before she could ponder further, a doctor walked in. Noticing she was alone, he asked, "Where's your family?"
Pearl collected herself and replied, "Doctor, you can talk to me."
The doctor glanced at the medical report with a slight frown and said, "Miss Pearl, are you aware that you're pregnant?"
The news struck Pearl with disbelief as she stared at her abdomen.
Pregnant?
Impossible.
For Pearl, the reality seemed surreal.
She and Oscar had been intimate just once; how could it have happened on that one occasion?
"Doctor, are you sure there's no mistake?"
The doctor said, "You're pregnant, just one month along, and it's still not stable. Miss Pearl, haven't you felt anything?"
Pearl pondered for a moment; she realized her period had been delayed for several days.
A delay of a few days was normal for her, but she hadn't expected to be actually pregnant this time.
"Your actions yesterday were very risky for both you and the baby. You can't do that again. I'll also have to remind your husband to keep a closer eye on you..."
"Doctor," Pearl looked at the physician, "please don't mention my pregnancy to anyone. I want to surprise my husband with the good news."
Seeing this, the doctor didn't press further, "Alright, then you must take good care of yourself and not overexert."
"I understand," Pearl replied with a slight smile.
The doctor handed Pearl the examination report and left.
Pearl put the report away carefully, but her thoughts were heavy.
Her hand gently caressed her stomach as she debated whether or not to tell him.
What if he saw it as a burden and asked her to terminate the pregnancy?
They were on the brink of divorce, and this child had come at a challenging time. It was probably pressure for Oscar.
She wasn't sure but still clung to a sliver of hope.
After finishing her IV treatment, Pearl was ready to be discharged from the hospital.
As she stepped out, she saw Harold, but Oscar was nowhere to be found, so she asked, "Where did President Oscar go?"
Harold responded, "President Oscar had to attend to something and asked me to take you home."
Pearl thought of Oscar at the company and said, "Take me to the company instead."
Harold was uncertain, "Are you sure you’re up for it?"
"Yes, I'm not seriously ill."
Harold obliged.
While in the car, Pearl, the CEO, occasionally touched her belly.
Although the child's arrival was unexpected, perhaps due to a surge of maternal instinct, she was beginning to look forward to it.
As soon as Pearl arrived at the company, she saw Haley coming down in the elevator wearing sunglasses, followed by her young assistant.
She stopped in her tracks, wondering if Oscar's rush back to the company was to see Haley.
The two exchanged glances; Haley, as ever, was cheerful as if basking in the warmth of spring. She removed her glasses and greeted her with a smile, "Pearl."
