Chapter 567 I Know Nothing
"No, I'm just not used to it," Magdalen muttered, still baffled why Oscar wanted her, an ad department gal, to chat with Archie.
She racked her brain but couldn't think of any ad gig with the Davies Group. Then, it hit her like a ton of bricks, and she freaked out.
Heart pounding, she headed to the reception room only to find out Oscar wasn't even in the building. Magdalen was fuming.
"Ms. Brown, want some tea first?" Archie knew Magdalen had been duped into coming back but played it cool.
Oscar must've known what he was doing with this setup, so Archie didn't bother hiding it.
After sipping some tea, Archie felt woozy, like he'd downed a few shots. If he didn't know Oscar better, he'd think the tea was spiked.
"Mr. Davies, what's the deal here?" Magdalen wanted to cut to the chase. If it wasn't her job, she was ready to bail.
Archie got up, chugged a glass of water, but still felt dizzy. He squinted, pissed off.
He stepped closer to Magdalen, leaning on the table right next to her. "What's the Brown Group after? Did I overestimate you?"
"I have no clue what you're talking about," Magdalen snapped, shoving him away. "If there's no business, I'm out. Got stuff to do, can't waste time."
"You spiked the tea, didn't you? What's your game?" Archie sneered, cornering her against the wall, his face inches from hers. "If something happens between us, I wouldn't mind. But I'd see you and the Brown Group differently."
Magdalen was floored. Oscar wouldn't betray her like this. The Brown Group didn't need to stoop this low. It made no sense.
The more she thought about it, the more lost she felt. She stared blankly at Archie, who was now way too close.
She was stuck. If she didn't go along, she'd be playing into Oscar's hands. If she did, Archie might think she was playing hard to get.
Tears streamed down her face, landing on Archie's chest. He wiped them off, frowning. "You're not into this? Feeling wronged?"
"It's not me. I didn't know. I don't know anything," Magdalen sobbed, feeling utterly betrayed.
She was genuinely upset. At the matchmaking event, she was almost drugged and taken by Marvin. Now, she was being drugged and betrayed by someone she trusted. How could she not feel wronged?
"I'm sorry, Mr. Davies, please let me go. I don't know anything," she pleaded, avoiding his gaze. After a moment of silence, she looked up and met his intense eyes, stunned.
The pain and struggle in his eyes gripped her, making her feel for him.
Her hand almost reached out to touch his face, causing him to step back.
"I believe you, but I was drugged. Please leave. I might lose control and hurt you," Archie said, turning away.
Magdalen bolted out and asked the secretary about the tea.
The secretary was clueless, not knowing what she was talking about.
Magdalen, frustrated, demanded, "Where's Oscar? Does he think avoiding me will make me forgive him? Tell him using these tactics makes him no better than Alfonso."
The secretary was freaking out more than Magdalen and frantically tried calling Oscar, but no luck.
"Alright, just call 911 and tell them someone's been drugged," Magdalen ordered.
"Who? What's happening? I made the tea myself, I swear I didn't do anything. You gotta believe me," the secretary pleaded, grabbing Magdalen's hand, but she shook her off.
A loud crash came from the reception room. Magdalen rushed over, flung the door open, and saw Archie on the floor, a chair knocked over. "Stay back, Oscar used some strong stuff," he groaned.
"I'll call an ambulance, hang in there," Magdalen said, trying to comfort him. She shut the door and told the secretary to call for help.
The ambulance showed up, and so did a swarm of reporters, snapping pics like crazy as the medics wheeled Archie out.
"Mr. Davies, were you drugged? Who did it?"
"Mr. Davies, why were you at the Brown Group if there's no business between you two?"
"Mr. Davies, what kind of drug was it?"
Archie couldn't get a word out. He wanted to explain but was torn.
If he defended the Brown Group, he'd be pissed. If he didn't, Magdalen would be upset.
In the end, he said nothing and urged the medics to get him out of there.
The news blew up fast. Oscar got a call from Pearl and found out. By the time he got back to the office, the medics were gone.
Magdalen was waiting for him.
"Magdalen," Oscar said, walking over and sitting down.
Magdalen looked up and sneered, "Oscar, haven't I been good to you? Why are you trying to screw me over like this?"
Oscar tried to explain. "I don't know what you're talking about, Magdalen. I tricked Archie into believing you were present, but I wanted him to come see me. The Davies Group has a client wanting to work with us, and I thought something was off, so..."
"So you drugged Archie's tea, hoping he'd hook up with me, and then blackmail him, right?" Magdalen was livid, glaring at Oscar. "Isn't that right, Mr. Brown?"
"No, that's not it," Oscar said, calling the secretary to get the details. He found out she made the tea, which confused him even more.
The secretary wouldn't dare do something like that. Someone else must've been in the reception room.
"I'll get to the bottom of this, Magdalen. Go home and rest. I'll let you know what I find," Oscar said, planning to check the security footage. The cameras would show who messed with the tea.
Magdalen was pissed but knew how ruthless Oscar could be, so she didn't push it.
"But you need to handle the PR. If this keeps up, it'll hurt the Brown Group," she reminded him at the door.
Oscar went silent. After she left, he sat at his desk, entered his password, and booted up his laptop.
He opened the surveillance software and, after a moment, pulled up the footage from an hour ago.
