Chapter 294 I'm Afraid You Won't Like Me Then

Pearl was stunned. "How did you know I wanted strawberry cake?"

Oscar smirked. "Magic."

Pearl was skeptical. No way it was just a coincidence.

She glanced at the wardrobe, then at Oscar, and walked over to open it. It was packed with snacks, fruits, cakes—everything.

She looked back at Oscar.

Oscar shrugged. "All for me."

Pearl laughed. "You really went all out to impress me."

Oscar's face turned a bit awkward, and he glanced at Elijah by the door, who looked away, embarrassed.

Half an hour earlier, Oscar and Elijah had been brainstorming ways to surprise Pearl.

Elijah suggested, "Fill the wardrobe with snacks and make her favorite foods appear. Girls love that!"

Oscar was doubtful. "Really?"

"Trust me, I've done it. They love it!" Elijah assured him.

So, Oscar followed his advice, but got caught in seconds.

When Oscar looked at him, Elijah felt guilty and stared at the wall.

Pearl was still thrilled; getting to eat what she wanted made her day.

She dug in with a spoon, smiling.

Oscar walked over to Elijah and whispered, "You said all girls like this."

Elijah replied, "I didn't know Ms. Harris wouldn't fall for it. My little nieces loved it!"

Oscar's eyes narrowed. "Nieces?"

Elijah admitted, "Oscar, honestly, the only girls I've dealt with are my nieces."

Oscar's face darkened. He shouldn't have trusted him, thinking he was experienced.

'Not reliable at all.'

Ten minutes later, Elijah was doing push-ups downstairs at the hospital.

Sweating, he counted, "Ninety-nine, one hundred, one hundred and one."

He regretted giving advice.

Pearl noticed Elijah from the window. "Is Elijah working out this late?"

Oscar said, "He likes night workouts."

"Really?" Pearl said, "He's disciplined. Soldiers must be, right?"

"Yeah," Oscar replied. "Quick, the best part of the show is on!"

Pearl went back to watching TV.

The next day, Harper called Pearl, needing an important document.

Pearl remembered it was at home, and Harper needed it urgently, so she had to go back.

Oscar was worried but didn't want to delay her work, which she loved a lot.

He sent Elijah to take her home.

Elijah was exhausted from yesterday. Despite regular training, he had run fifty laps and done five hundred push-ups.

On the verge of tears, he complained to Pearl, "Ms. Harris, sometimes you should tell Oscar not to be so hard on us. Even a bull would be worn out."

Pearl was puzzled. "What's wrong? How is he harsh?"

Elijah sighed. "Yesterday, Oscar made me work out until midnight, and I had to get up super early today."

"Didn't he say you like working out at night?" Pearl was surprised.

"Oscar said that?" Elijah felt pitiful but accepted it. "Alright, I like night workouts."

When they reached Pearl's floor, she said, "Wait here, I'll be right back."

"Okay."

Elijah would ensure her safety but also respect her privacy.

They had checked the apartment, and it seemed safe.

Pearl paused at Jeffery's room door.

She had many questions but didn't know why Jeffery wouldn't see her.

'Maybe he had his reasons. Is he home now?'

After a moment, Pearl pressed his doorbell, and she did it three times.

After waiting a bit, Jeffery didn't open the door, so she thought he wasn't home.

Just as she was about to leave, the door suddenly opened. "Jeffery!"

He leaned weakly towards her.

Pearl was stunned and hurried to catch him.

Jeffery held onto the door, not putting all his weight on her. "What's wrong with you?"

"Carol," Jeffery called weakly.

Hearing this name, Pearl didn't deny it and pushed him inside.

Once inside, she smelled blood.

She saw the trash can full of bloody gauze.

Pearl quickly placed Jeffery on the sofa and found his abdomen stained with blood, which scared her.

She had seen a lot of blood lately, so she quickly re-bandaged his wound.

"Carol." Jeffery's blue eyes looked at her. He resisted but didn't dare touch her hand. "Don't touch me, I'm dirty."

Pearl stared at him.

Jeffery avoided her gaze, feeling a sense of inferiority. "Don't touch me, I'm dirty. Don't make yourself dirty."

Maybe it was this sense of inferiority that made Pearl move closer to him.

It made her feel pity for him, along with a bit of bitterness.

She felt he shouldn't be like this.

'He should be clean. He was a doctor, the most sacred profession in the world; how could he be dirty?'

Her hand covered his.

When she did that, Jeffery's body trembled slightly.

"You're not dirty, I don't think you're," Pearl said, looking at his almost peeling hands. "Give me your hand, I'll bandage your wound."

Jeffery looked at her with sadness in his eyes and asked, "Are you not afraid of me anymore?"

"I'm not."

Jeffery's eyes welled up, a faint smile on his lips. "That's great, you're not afraid of me anymore, that's great."

Pearl pulled his clothes open and found his body covered in scars.

She couldn't believe it and looked up at him. "How did this happen? Why do you have so many wounds? Last time I saw your arm was also injured, why?"

Jeffery's lips had lost their color, and he smiled bitterly. "You know I won't lie to you. Don't ask; I'm afraid you won't like me anymore."
