Chapter 681 See You in Court
"Don't sweat it about him. I'll handle it," Pearl said, not wanting to drag Christopher into the mess.
He was still just a kid, and he deserved to enjoy his childhood without worries.
But Christopher had other ideas. "Mom, Dad, we're a family. Is there anything I can do to help? I want to pitch in."
"Just take care of yourself, that's the best help you can give us. I'll keep you both safe," Pearl said, giving his cheek a playful pinch.
She was determined to protect the kids. As for the guy in black, Oscar would figure out who he was.
Time to head home.
"Yeah, I believe in you! You got this!" Christopher said, grinning wide.
Once he buckled up, Oscar started the drive home.
Over at the Sandvik place...
Since the last time Liam and Tessa persuaded her at the hotel, Desiree had moved back home.
Tessa told the housekeeper, "Please prepare some nutritious meals and make sure Desiree gets well-nourished."
"Mom, it's not necessary. I'm fine," Desiree said, feeling a mix of gratitude and regret.
Liam and Tessa really did love her the most. She'd been so dumb before, causing all that drama over one guy.
"Look at you, you're so thin. Trust me, whether it's childbirth or a miscarriage, it's important to ensure proper nutrition. Now that you're home and we have the means, why not take care of yourself?" Tessa said, holding her hand.
Their family wasn't like the Lewis family. They had money and a stash of medicinal herbs.
Desiree couldn't turn down Tessa's kindness. "Thanks, Mom."
"You're welcome. If you really care about us, think about what we've said. Daryl's a good guy," Tessa said, bringing up the topic again.
Desiree felt stuck.
Sometimes she just couldn't follow Tessa's logic. She and Harold were having issues, but they weren't divorced yet.
Plus, she had just had a miscarriage and wasn't even fully recovered, and they were already pushing her towards another guy.
She knew they meant well, but she couldn't move on that fast.
"Mom, you promised to give me more time. At least let me recover and sort things out with Harold," Desiree said.
"Recovering is important. But what are you going to do with Harold?" Tessa's worries flared up again. "Don't make the same mistake twice. I can tell he's not good for you."
A good match wasn't just about money; it was about a lot of other things too.
Desiree had been well-educated from a young age. She became a secretary to sharpen her skills.
After gaining experience, she came back as the Sandvik Family's daughter. Whether she wanted to join the family business or start her own thing, the family had her back. But what about Harold? His family was pretty average. Sure, he climbed his way up to an assistant position and then started his own business, which showed he had some skills.
But as parents, who wouldn't want their daughter to find someone with better prospects?
Now Harold's business was doing well, partly thanks to Oscar's help. But what if Oscar stopped helping, or if Harold made it big and then ditched Desiree?
That would be a nightmare for her.
Tessa had always worried about this, but their relationship seemed so solid that she couldn't say anything—until this fight confirmed her doubts about Harold.
"It won't come to that. I saw him with another woman. It's impossible for us to get back together." Desiree shook her head.
Tessa had only known about their argument, so hearing this made her face darken.
"Well, he's so outrageous. Already cozying up to another woman. You two should get divorced tomorrow," she said firmly.
Desiree nodded.
Back in her room, she looked at the calendar and realized tomorrow was the weekend.
The court was closed on weekends, so it would have to wait until Monday.
She took out her phone and sent Harold a message: [Let's meet at the courthouse next Monday.]
[Desiree, why do you want to go to the courthouse?] Harold replied instantly.
He stared at the screen.
He knew deep down that going to the courthouse meant divorce.
But he couldn't accept it and wanted to make one last effort: [How about we meet first? We have a lot of misunderstandings. Even if you want a divorce, let's clear them up first.]
[There's nothing to discuss. I told you last time to register for divorce, but you didn't show. If you don't come next Monday, I'll come find you. I don't want to drag this out.] After sending the message, Desiree put down her phone and lay on the bed, feeling empty inside.
She hadn't expected the marriage to be so short.
Neither of them slept well that night, both thinking about their happier times.
The next morning, Desiree got up, washed, and heard a knock on the door.
She opened the bedroom door and saw Daryl. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to check on you. Don't forget, we agreed to act in front of our parents. If we don't even see each other, how can we act convincingly?" Daryl said, glancing around the cozy bedroom.
He suddenly felt an urge to go in for tea. "Desiree, how about inviting me in for a cup of tea?"
"Let's just have tea in the living room. I didn't make my bed this morning, and the bedroom is a mess," Desiree said, finding an excuse to refuse him.
The bedroom was her private space, and she didn't like others intruding.
Daryl nodded. As long as he could be with her, it didn't matter if it was in the bedroom, the living room, or anywhere else.
