Chapter 476 The Child Did Not Die
Jeffery grabbed Pearl's arm and said, "Carol, it's been days. You've searched the river over and over, and still no sign of Oscar. Even Nicholas, who's more experienced, hasn't found him. We need to face the truth."
He was implying that if Oscar hadn't been found by now, he was likely dead.
Death is final. Pearl had to accept reality, even if she didn't want to.
Pearl wasn't listening. "Don't tell me that. Until I see his body, I won't believe he's dead."
"Everyone go back! Even if I die, I have to find him!" Pearl was frantic and on the edge of breaking down.
As long as she hadn't seen Oscar's body, she clung to the hope he was alive.
Given the situation, she didn't want to drag others down. If Kevin targeted her, she didn't care if she lived.
With no other option, Jeffery reluctantly knocked Pearl out and took her back to camp.
Louis was waiting there, planning to take Pearl back to the Eldorians, but Jeffery refused.
"Mr. Mitchell, in her current state, I can't let you take her. She's been searching for Oscar for days. If she wakes up and finds herself taken away, she might do something drastic."
Despite the faint hope in Pearl's heart, as days passed, she would have to face reality.
Pearl loved Oscar so much that if she felt restricted, she might go to extremes.
Louis thought about Pearl's attitude and what she had said before, and eventually, he stepped aside for Jeffery.
When Pearl woke up, the first thing she did was try to get out of bed to look for Oscar, but Jeffery held her down. "In your condition, where can you go? Pearl, you have to face reality. Tranquiloria has already issued an obituary."
Pearl was in disbelief.
'The military confirmed it, so Oscar was really gone. No way! How could Oscar leave me behind?'
She couldn't accept it.
She wanted to ask Oscar why he broke his promise to her.
Why did he always make decisions without consulting her—like with their child, coming here for peacekeeping, and even their divorce?
At that moment, Pearl broke down.
She thought about ending her life, but with Jeffery there, he wouldn't let her.
Pearl struggled and broke down. "Why are you stopping me? I've lived so long as Pearl. Now you're telling me I'm not Pearl, and that Oscar is dead. What meaning does my life have now?"
Her child was gone too.
She couldn't accept this life. She had once dreamed of a beautiful future with Oscar, being together and having several children. But now, all those dreams were shattered.
Oscar would never come back.
Jeffery patted her shoulder. Besides this kind of comfort, he had nothing else to offer.
Until a familiar and urgent female voice sounded in Pearl's ear. "Pearl."
Pearl froze in shock.
It was Barbara's voice, but ever since Barbara lost her memory, her tone when calling Pearl had changed. Had Barbara regained her memory?
Pearl quickly looked up and saw Barbara, tears in her eyes.
Barbara's clothes were torn, and her face was dirty, showing signs of battle.
As soon as they locked eyes, Barbara ran to Pearl, grabbing her hand. "Pearl, I'm back. I heard about Mr. Brown."
Barbara had been fighting with the soldiers when she was bombed. Another soldier shielded her with his body, and she was unconscious for days. When she woke up, she had regained all her memories.
Returning to camp, she found out Oscar had died.
Knowing how much Pearl loved Oscar, she rushed to her side.
Pearl froze at the sight of Barbara, tears streaming down her face.
Pearl wasn't one to cry, but she couldn't help it. The person she loved most was gone forever.
Overwhelmed with grief, she started coughing violently, even coughing up blood.
Barbara was terrified, but Jeffery quickly handed her a tissue.
Jeffery gave Barbara a look, signaling her to comfort Pearl.
Barbara bit her lip and sat beside Pearl, holding her hand. "Pearl, I know you're hurting. But you have to pull yourself together, or how will you face your child in the future?"
"What did you say?" Pearl was stunned, utterly incredulous.
'Child? Wasn't my child already dead? Why would Barbara say that?'
Pearl's throat hurt as she spoke, "Barbara, what do you know?"
Even Jeffery was shocked. Barbara had initially followed Donald, unaware of Pearl's identity, and had poisoned Pearl. Later, upon learning the truth, she deeply regretted it and joined Oscar, dedicating herself to protecting Pearl. If Oscar had made any moves, Barbara would have known.
But the child had died back then. Pearl had even asked Barbara later, and Barbara had denied knowing anything. Now Barbara was bringing up the child again.
Pearl wouldn't believe it. "Barbara, I know you want me to live. But you shouldn't lie to me about this."
The child had been declared dead at birth. Even Oscar had confirmed it.
Barbara felt a pang in her throat.
To ignite Pearl's will to live, she had to say this.
She had long suspected that the child might not be dead, but only Oscar knew the truth.
To stay by Pearl's side and make up for her past mistakes, she became one of Oscar's people, protecting Pearl.
Previously, she wasn't sure enough to tell Pearl. But now, in this situation, if she didn't speak up, Pearl would lose all hope to live.
Barbara's throat hurt, and she said hoarsely, "Pearl, I'm not lying to you. I suspect your child might still be alive. Don't you find it strange? You need to hold on, for your child's sake."
She just wanted Pearl to stay alive.
Pearl's eyes were already filled with tears. She grabbed Barbara's hand tightly, as if it were her lifeline.
"Barbara, what do you know? Tell me, where is my child?"
