Chapter 838 Business Trip
Saskia had originally thought everything was settled.
That was until she overheard someone mention that Caleb was also going to take over the project.
Saskia frowned, "Wasn't the project already assigned to Mr. Egan? How can one project have two people in charge?"
Her assistant glanced outside nervously before leaning in closer, "It was Mr. Robbie Egan's request."
Saskia's frown deepened, her mind flashing back to Nathaniel's indifferent demeanor over the past few days.
She couldn't believe she hadn't noticed anything.
Was Nathaniel really that unconcerned, or was he hiding it so well that even she couldn't see through it?
Saskia was increasingly puzzled by Robbie's intentions.
Feeling uneasy, Saskia decided she couldn't let things continue like this and went to see Nathaniel.
As soon as she walked in, Nathaniel looked up, his narrow eyes scanning her briefly before he lowered his gaze. "You're here just in time. I need to tell you something. Tomorrow, we're flying to Majestic City for a business trip. It'll be two days. Make sure Benjamin is taken care of."
"So soon?"
"The Pearl Harbor project's partner is in Majestic City."
Saskia knew Nathaniel well enough to understand that when he said something like this, it meant he had already made up his mind.
She didn't react much to the fact that Nathaniel wanted to bring her along.
If Nathaniel hadn't wanted to bring her, Saskia would have objected. As his secretary, especially for such an important project, she definitely needed to go.
Arranging for Benjamin was easy enough.
Saskia pondered for a moment before saying, "I'll let Mrs. Egan know and ask her to look after Benjamin for a few days."
After speaking, she frowned with some concern.
"What's wrong?" Nathaniel noticed Saskia's mood.
Saskia hesitated, "I was just thinking about my mom."
In the rush, she had only thought about Benjamin, forgetting that there was now another person at home who needed care—Heidi. Benjamin had Jade to look after him, but what about Heidi?
She couldn't possibly ask Jade to take care of both of them.
The thought of Jade having to care for two people made her feel awkward.
"That's also what I wanted to talk to you about. Jeffery spoke to me. After thinking it over, he believes that moving your mother to a specialized care facility might be better for her."
"But that would mean..."
Saskia was reluctant.
Sending her mother to a care facility would mean professional care, more time than she could provide. But it also meant Saskia would have even less time to spend with Heidi.
Heidi had already been away for so many years, missing out on enough time with her. Now that she was finally back, how could Saskia be willing to let her go?
Even if she took a step back and let someone else care for Heidi, could she really trust them?
"I'm not asking you to send her right away. If you're unwilling, you can have someone else help look after her." Nathaniel softened his tone, his eyes reflecting helplessness.
Saskia nodded gloomily.
She called Pearl and asked her to help look after Heidi.
Pearl agreed readily.
But Saskia's mood didn't improve. Her mind was filled with Nathaniel's recent words.
Pearl could help for a while, but not forever. This issue would need to be resolved eventually, and maybe it was time for her to learn to let go.
That night, Saskia was unusually quiet.
She thought she had hidden it well.
Even Benjamin didn't notice her low spirits, but surprisingly, Heidi did.
"Saskia, don't cry. Mommy's here." Heidi placed a piece of candy in her hand, her gentle eyes filled with love.
For a moment, Saskia thought Heidi had recovered.
But upon closer inspection, she realized it wasn't the case. Heidi was still the same, just trying to comfort her because she sensed her sadness.
Saskia's nose tingled, fighting the urge to cry.
Heidi didn't understand why her words made Saskia more upset, becoming flustered and repeating, "Don't cry, Saskia, don't cry."
Saskia remembered how her mom used to say that to her when she was little, tears welling up as she smiled, "I'm not crying."
Then she quickly wiped away her tears.
Seeing Saskia stop crying, Heidi let go of her hand.
"Mom, if I send you somewhere, you won't be able to see Benjamin and me often. Would you be okay with that? Would you blame me?"
"Where are you sending me?"
Heidi became more anxious.
Seeing her reaction, Saskia immediately abandoned the thought, quickly reassuring her, "It's nothing, I was just joking. Go back to playing with Benjamin."
Heidi happily played with Benjamin, their laughter occasionally reaching Saskia.
Saskia sighed helplessly.
Forget it, I'll think about it when I get back.
Early morning, at the airport.
They had an early flight, with plenty of luggage, though others were handling it, so it wasn't too troublesome.
Soon, the plane took off.
Before takeoff, Saskia spent a long time on the phone with Benjamin.
Although she had told him yesterday that she would be away for two days on a business trip to Majestic City, Benjamin had been upset but accepted it.
Still, Saskia worried about Benjamin feeling sad.
After the video call, knowing Benjamin wasn't too upset, Saskia finally felt at ease.
Looking out at the blue sky and white clouds from the plane window, Saskia rubbed her forehead uncomfortably, catching a glimpse of Nathaniel doing the same.
Except he was rubbing his stomach.
Saskia suddenly remembered something.
Oh right, how could she forget, Nathaniel had a stomach condition.
Saskia's brows furrowed as she searched through her bag, recalling that she had packed stomach medicine before leaving.
"Excuse me, could I get a cup of warm water?" Saskia asked the flight attendant.
The flight attendant in business class was very attentive, quickly bringing her a cup of warm water.
Saskia took the water and medicine over to Nathaniel, "Nathaniel, take some medicine."
Nathaniel, enduring the pain, raised his eyebrows slightly, trying to hide his discomfort, his face cold to keep others at bay.
But as soon as Saskia approached, the coldness on his face dissipated, "You prepared this? I didn't know you carried stomach medicine with you."
Saskia's arm was getting tired, "You have a stomach condition, don't you? Do you want it or not?"
Nathaniel glanced at her, the last trace of coldness disappearing from his eyes. He took the water and medicine, setting them aside, and first held her hand.
Saskia was taken aback.
He quickly let go, as if the warmth had never existed, but Saskia was sure it wasn't her imagination, "Since my secretary insists, I'll take it."
The medicine was mild, taking effect slowly.
But Nathaniel seemed to feel a bit better.
Saskia, still worried, spoke to the flight attendant and switched to the seat next to Nathaniel.
Their seats had been random, in the same cabin but not together, which had displeased Nathaniel at the time.
Now, he got his wish.
As Saskia sat, a heavy weight fell on her shoulder. She nudged Nathaniel's forehead away, "Mr. Egan, wake up."
Her tone was deliberately cold and distant.
They had been pretending to be just a regular boss and secretary at the company for months, and even on a business trip, Saskia felt they should continue the act.
