Chapter 895 I'll Handle It
Jace was taken in by the police for questioning, and it didn't take long for the truth to come out—the girl's illness wasn't a coincidence.
Jace had secretly swapped out the liver donor.
The originally matched liver was replaced, causing the rejection.
Afterward, the hospital paid a large sum of money for Jace's actions, but it couldn't heal the pain of the families involved. Death was final, and no amount of money could bring someone back.
Lyra and her friends could only feel sorrow; they couldn't help.
Once Jeffery cleared his name from suspicion, he kept his promise and arranged for Lyra to join the hospital's latest important research project.
Many people were unhappy about it.
They thought Lyra was too young and couldn't handle the responsibility.
But Jeffery vouched for her, saying, "I chose her. If anything goes wrong, I'll take responsibility. Besides, she's here to be my assistant."
His choice didn't need anyone else's approval.
Jeffery stood firm against the opposition and got Lyra into the project.
Lyra learned a lot of specialized knowledge, and her skills grew daily. Her gratitude towards Jeffery couldn't be expressed in just a few words.
"Mr. Gray, do you have a moment?"
She gathered her courage and knocked on Jeffery's office door.
Jeffery's lips parted slightly, "Come in."
Seeing Lyra enter, his gaze swept over her, noticing the obvious change from a few days ago—she had gained confidence.
Lyra had always been competent at work but lacked self-assurance, as if her efforts were insignificant. Now, her eyes and every gesture exuded a newfound confidence and composure.
Jeffery's eyes showed a hint of admiration, though his voice remained calm, "What is it? Speak directly."
Lyra hesitated for a moment, "Mr. Gray, you've helped me a lot. I'd like to invite you to dinner as a thank you. Are you available?"
Jeffery frowned, ready to refuse.
Since he joined the hospital, many had hinted at wanting to meet him, but Jeffery never agreed. He had no interest in lifelong companionship.
Also, he had someone in his heart—Davide.
But Lyra's clear eyes didn't seem to have that kind of intention, making him hesitate.
Lyra lowered her eyes, trying to hide her disappointment. "If you're not available, just forget I asked. Sorry to bother you."
At that moment, Jeffery suddenly spoke, "Alright."
Lyra's eyes lit up with surprise, the brightness almost making Jeffery want to look away.
Too bright a light could be painful.
Just as Jeffery wondered if he should have declined.
Lyra quickly regained her composure, "I'll wait for you, Mr. Gray. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll be waiting."
After she left, Jeffery sat quietly for a long time, his fingers tapping on the desk.
Like a disrupted heartbeat.
Lyra spent a long time choosing an outfit before going out for dinner with Jeffery.
She didn't know why she felt so excited.
She just couldn't hide her emotions, thinking it was simply her eagerness to thank Jeffery, not considering anything else.
Just as she was feeling happy, her phone rang.
As soon as she answered, familiar curses greeted her, "Lyra, you've got guts, not coming back! Are you trying to abandon me? You better watch out, or I'll post everything you've done online!"
It was Aaron.
Lyra's excitement vanished, replaced by a heavy weight that made it hard to breathe. "Aaron, what do you want now?"
"Send me $200,000. I need a better wheelchair."
Lyra frowned. "Didn't you just get a new wheelchair? You're probably planning to waste the money elsewhere."
Caught off guard, Aaron exploded in anger. "Cut the crap. Just tell me if you'll give me the money. Send me $200,000, and I promise I won't bother you for a while."
Listening to the voice on the phone, Lyra gripped her phone tightly, filled with regret.
No one knew how much she regretted it. If she hadn't gone out that day, hadn't gotten into that car, maybe it would have been better if she had died.
At least she would be free, instead of being drained by this family like a leech, not stopping until they sucked her dry.
Lyra felt deeply powerless, her voice filled with defeat. "I told you last time, I don't have any money left. No matter how many times you ask, it's the same. Post whatever you want, I don't care."
She believed she hadn't done anything to wrong Aaron over the years.
Those were just things Aaron thought he could use against her.
So, Lyra easily hung up the phone, and when Aaron called back, she blocked him.
She didn't want to waste any more time with this family. Lyra was truly exhausted.
She lay on the sofa, covered in clothes, staring blankly at the ceiling, her eyes lifeless, the joy from a few minutes ago gone, like a puppet without a soul.
Until Jeffery's call came through.
"Are you ready? I'm here to pick you up."
Lyra's eyes moved, and she sat up. "Almost ready, I'll be right down."
One phone call reignited her spirit.
Lyra got ready and went downstairs, quickly spotting an Audi 911 on the nearby lawn.
Inside the car, Jeffery looked at his phone. Hearing movement, he glanced over, his deep eyes landing on Lyra's champagne-colored dress, pausing.
"That dress suits you."
Lyra's heart raced as she sat in the passenger seat. "Thank you."
Jeffery glanced at her, noticing something, and suddenly leaned forward.
The masculine scent intensified, making Lyra's heart race uncontrollably, her whole body tense with nerves.
The next moment, she heard a soft click, and Jeffery casually sat back, explaining, "You forgot to buckle your seatbelt."
Lyra's hands suddenly felt cold, unsure if she was disappointed or embarrassed.
Meanwhile.
Aaron angrily threw his phone, panting. "That bitch dares not give me money and even blocked me. Doesn't she realize she wouldn't be where she is without us?"
Elowen Hill picked up the phone, timidly trying to calm him. "Don't be too angry. Maybe the hospital is just busy."
Aaron moved his unfeeling legs, like wooden logs.
His face fell, staring at his legs with a terrifyingly sinister look. "Too busy to even care about family? Mom, stop fooling yourself. She despises me for being disabled and thinks our family can't give her a better life. That bitch doesn't realize I'm like this because of her!"
The more Aaron thought, the angrier he got.
He snatched the phone from Elowen's hand and dialed a number. "I'll do what you said. I have dirt on Lyra, let's expose it together!"
Lyra showed no mercy, so he wouldn't either!
