Chapter 291 It Does Feel a Bit Uncomfortable
"I don't know," Pearl said. "Go to sleep."
Janetta, exhausted, quickly fell asleep again, but Pearl couldn't stop overthinking.
She kept thinking about the cross bracelet in Jeffery's hand. She knew it well.
In the morning, Janetta woke Pearl up, looking anxious. "Pearl, wake up! Oscar's critically ill!"
Pearl's eyes widened. "What?"
Her heart raced as she jumped out of bed. "When did this happen?"
"Just now, Elijah called!" Janetta said.
Pearl checked the call log; it was indeed from Elijah.
'Could Oscar really not wake up?' she thought, tears welling up. The idea of life without Oscar was unbearable.
As long as Oscar was alive, there was hope. If he died, she'd never see him again, and that was true pain.
Her heart felt like it was splitting open.
Pearl wanted to cry but knew she needed to get to the hospital. She forced herself to get dressed and rushed over.
On the way, Janetta tried to comfort her. "Don't be too sad."
Pearl thought, 'How can I not be sad? If Oscar dies, what will I and the baby do?'
She couldn't imagine life without Oscar. Even if they divorced, even if he didn't love her, it was better than him being gone.
Pearl held back her tears, too sad to speak. She couldn't hear what others were saying. Her mind was only on Oscar's critical condition.
At the hospital, Pearl rushed to the ICU. She saw his comrades looking serious, and Oscar was still in a coma.
Pearl couldn't hold back anymore. Trembling, she hoarsely called out, "Oscar!"
She walked in, seeing his tightly closed eyes and pale face. She had never seen him so weak.
"Ms. Harris," Elijah called her.
Pearl, dazed, walked to Oscar's side. Her legs gave out, and she knelt by the bed, grabbing his hand. Tears streamed down. "How could this happen? Didn't you say you wouldn't die? Keep your word. If you die, what will I do?"
She flopped by the bed, crying bitterly.
She couldn't imagine receiving such news.
But then, Oscar's fingers moved.
Pearl thought she was imagining it.
Oscar's fingers moved again.
Pearl, so downcast, thought it was a hallucination until Oscar's hand rested on her head.
"If I die, you won't have a husband. How can I let you be a widow?" Oscar's hoarse voice said.
Pearl's sobbing stopped abruptly. She looked up in disbelief.
Oscar's eyes were open, looking at her tenderly, a smile on his lips.
She was stunned. 'Didn't Elijah say he was critically ill? How could he speak? Was Elijah lying to me?'
Oscar wanted to embrace her, to feel at ease.
But Pearl, both sad and angry, pushed his arms away and stood up, looking at his triumphant face. "You lied to me."
She then looked at Elijah and his comrades. "You all conspired to lie to me, didn't you?"
Elijah looked innocent. "Oscar wanted to see you, so he wanted you to come quickly."
"Stop talking!" Pearl's emotions fluctuated as she stared at Oscar. "You're despicable, lying to me even now. Did you ever think about my feelings?"
Oscar grabbed Pearl's hand and weakly said, "I was wrong. I missed you so much and was afraid you wouldn't come, so I came up with this idea."
Pearl shook off his hand. "I don't accept it. If you want to die so badly, go ahead!"
She turned to leave.
"Pearl!" Oscar tried to get out of bed to chase her but pulled his wound and fell back heavily, coughing.
Pearl stopped and looked back, seeing him in pain. She couldn't help but care. She ran over and asked, "Are you okay? Did you pull your wound? Should I call a doctor?"
Despite the pain, Oscar grabbed her hand. "As long as you don't leave, I'll be fine."
Pearl saw the deep desire and plea in his eyes. She couldn't harden her heart. "Lie down properly and let the doctor check you."
Oscar lay back down, not forgetting to ask, "So you're not leaving?"
Pearl said, "You got hurt because of me. If I leave now, that would be ungrateful. I still owe you this favor."
A smile appeared on Oscar's lips. "As long as you stay, that's all that matters."
Pearl felt moved. She never thought they'd end up like this. She had already thought they would end up divorced. But now, she couldn't leave him.
The doctor came to check on Oscar and said he would recover with proper rest.
After the doctor left, Oscar looked at Pearl. "I'm hungry."
Elijah, being perceptive, immediately said, "I'll go buy something."
He quickly left with the remaining comrades.
With only two ofthem in the room, Oscar beckoned her. "Come here."
Pearl walked over, and Oscar grabbed her hand, pulling her into his arms. Pearl leaned on his shoulder, still a bit worried. "Will I touch your wound?"
"It doesn't hurt."
Oscar added, "If you kiss me, I'll recover faster."
Pearl gave him a push.
Oscar gasped in pain.
Pearl got nervous again. "Did I touch your wound?"
"You're so strong, be careful, or I might really be in critical condition." Oscar was in so much pain that he broke out in a cold sweat.
"Don't say that." Pearl was still quite scared. "I'll be more careful in the future."
Oscar eased his pain and asked her, "Did you not sleep well last night?"
"How did you know?"
"You don't look well." Oscar touched her face. "You were too worried about me, right?"
Pearl bit her lip and lowered her eyes, honestly saying, "Don't do this again. You nearly gave me a heart attack!"
Oscar now knew she cared and worried about him. "Pearl, stay with me and take a nap."
"How can one bed fit two people?" Pearl said.
"It doesn't matter." Oscar moved to the side and patted the bed. "Come on, I'll lull you to sleep."
Pearl gazed at his face, which had lost its aloofness and coldness, replaced by tenderness.
She didn't know what she was thinking, but she went along with him and lay down.
She lay on her side.
Oscar extended his arm and held her in his embrace. "Go to sleep."
"Okay."
Lying there, Pearl still couldn't fall asleep quickly.
She kept moving in his arms.
Oscar endured it without making a sound.
But Pearl heard his heavy breathing and thought something was wrong, so she asked, "Are you uncomfortable?"
Oscar's hoarse voice carried a bit of helplessness. "I am a bit uncomfortable."
