Chapter 914 Simply Let It Go

"Starting today, you're officially back as my assistant. I know you'll get the hang of it quickly."

Lyra's eyes widened in surprise. "Mr. Gary, really? I'll give it my all."

Jeffery stood up, walked over to Lyra, and patted her shoulder.

"First, get familiar with the recent work schedule and related materials. If you have any questions, just ask me. I believe in you."

Lyra hesitated, staring at Jeffery. "This doesn't feel right."

Jeffery already had an assistant. If she took the job, wouldn't the current assistant cause trouble for her? Plus, so many people at the hospital were infatuated with Jeffery. She had already been spending a lot of time with him, and becoming his assistant would make her a target.

Lyra just wanted to distance herself from the Hill family and live a peaceful life.

Jeffery squinted slightly. "What's not right?"

"Mr. Gary, you know how popular you are at the hospital. If I accept, your previous assistant and others... I don't want to become a public enemy."

"Aren't you short on money?"

Jeffery didn't seem to hear Lyra's concerns. His eyes were fixed on her.

"Yeah..."

The Hill family was like a bottomless pit, and she had no savings. She wanted to save some money for herself.

Jeffery's lips curled into a cold smile. "Since you're short on money, isn't it good that I'm giving you a chance to earn some? My assistant is just an assistant. You have clinical experience, and I have a lot to handle."

"But..."

"No buts."

Before Lyra could finish, Jeffery interrupted her, his expression stern.

Seeing Jeffery's serious demeanor, Lyra knew he was not to be argued with. But she really didn't want to become the hospital's enemy.

Jeffery seemed to read her mind and chuckled. "You don't want to be their enemy, so you want to offend me instead?"

Lyra was at a loss for words.

She didn't want to offend anyone, but it seemed impossible to please everyone.

Jeffery gave her the impression that if she offended him, she might as well kiss her job goodbye.

Without Jeffery, she wouldn't be able to stay at the hospital.

She had no choice but to compromise. "If you want me to be your assistant, you should make an official announcement. I don't want any misunderstandings."

Jeffery's lips twisted in a mocking smile. "I don't have the right to decide who works by my side?"

Lyra quickly explained, "That's not what I meant. I just..."

"Enough. You can go now. I'll take care of everything." Jeffery cut her off, not wanting to hear more.

Lyra didn't linger.

About three days later, Jeffery made the official announcement.

As expected, the hospital staff immediately saw her as a public enemy, especially one particular intern who confronted her.

"Didn't expect you to be so capable, becoming Mr. Gary's assistant. Did you spend all the money I gave you?"

The female intern's smile was icy, making Lyra feel ashamed. "I tried my best with what you asked me to do for Mr. Gary, but he found out. The money..."

"I don't want it back. Either you pay me triple, or you can kiss your career goodbye."

The intern's eyes were fierce.

Lyra hadn't expected her greed for money to cause such a big problem. If she couldn't be a doctor, she would have no income.

"What do you want? I'll keep helping you. But using WhatsApp is out of the question. How about I drug him again or set up another opportunity?"

Lyra grabbed the intern's hand, feeling desperate.

The intern didn't lack money; otherwise, she wouldn't have given Lyra so much.

She just wanted to stay at the hospital.

"Set up another opportunity? Do you think Jeffery will fall for it again? Dr. Cole, do you take Mr. Gary for a fool?"

Jeffery wasn't a fool, and ordinary drugs didn't seem to affect him much.

Lyra felt helpless.

One wrong step had led to another, and now she didn't know what to do.

The intern hooked her arm around Lyra's shoulder. "Dr. Cole, you must be really talented to get Mr. Gary to make you his assistant. You have so many chances to be close to him."

"But honestly, your face..." The intern suddenly stopped talking and pinched Lyra's cheeks hard.

Lyra noticed her cold and provocative gaze.

She felt like a commodity being inspected.

She didn't know what the intern would say next.

Unexpectedly, the intern laughed. "Lyra, I'm not as crazy as you think. And stop looking at me like that. I have a name. It's Alice Lee."

"Got it."

Taking someone's money made you their servant. In front of Alice, Lyra felt utterly humble.

Alice laughed heartily. "Lyra, look at you. I don't know what Jeffery sees in you. Is it your weakness?"

Alice looked at her like she was a joke, and Lyra hated it, but she had no choice.

"I don't know what Mr. Gary sees in me either. But I can't refuse what you ask. However, there has to be a limit." She couldn't let Alice control her forever. If word got out, how could she survive in the hospital?

Alice squinted, her beautiful eyes looking at Lyra with disdain. "Oh, that's the funniest thing I've heard. You think you can negotiate with me? Do you have the right?"

Lyra felt a sense of powerlessness.

The Hill family had always controlled her, and now Alice wanted to as well. She had a temper, too, and she knew that agreeing would lead to endless demands.

Lyra took a deep breath, stepped back, and put some distance between them. "I know I don't have the right, but you only gave me a little money. I can pay you back double; that's my limit. Don't think you can threaten me. If you like Jeffery, go after him yourself. Asking me to do these illegal things, I can't do it."

With that, Lyra turned to leave, deciding to let things be.

Unexpectedly, Alice rushed in front of her.
