Chapter 259 She Was Fired
"Why am I feeling sad?" Pearl wondered but couldn't figure it out.
"How long was I out?" she asked.
"Half an hour," Emma said. "You must be exhausted. You fell asleep at your desk."
Pearl thought it might be her pregnancy. "Maybe I didn't sleep well last night."
Emma looked concerned but felt relieved once she saw Pearl was okay.
"I've got great news," Emma said. "Our article got over a million clicks! The internet is slamming Haley, and even Chloe's getting heat. We did it!"
"I can't wait to see Chloe's reaction. She's dragged Horizon Network into this mess and will definitely face consequences," Emma added.
Pearl's main target was Haley. "We've made progress, but since it affects Horizon Network, we need to be careful."
Emma reassured her, "Don't worry. We exposed Haley, not Chloe. Chloe messed up on her own. A smart leader will see we did it to protect Horizon Network's reputation."
Pearl agreed. This time they might get rid of Chloe for good, since her credibility had been ruined, which would cost her career. Besides, she was the one who dragged Horizon Network into this mess.
Just then, Chloe stormed in, looking furious. "Pearl, Emma, you're sabotaging my work again!"
Pearl stayed calm.
Emma stood her ground. "We're just doing our jobs, finding news and speaking up for others. You're not that important."
Chloe snapped, "I've been trying to interview Haley, and you ruined it. Let's go see the editor-in-chief. I was about to secure a big collaboration, and now it's ruined because of you!"
Pearl found Chloe's accusations laughable. "Do you think you're the only one who can find news?"
Chloe sneered, "Everyone knows my abilities! Don't question me!"
"Everyone here is capable, not just you," Pearl said. "You've violated journalistic integrity. You're not fit to be a journalist anymore."
Chloe laughed. "Who do you think you are? You're just stuck here typing manuscript. You'll be doing that forever if I have my way!"
Pearl knew Chloe was desperate.
Emma jumped in, "Let's go see the editor-in-chief. Everyone knows who's at fault!"
"Fine," Chloe sneered. "Let's see who gets punished!"
"Stop arguing!" Harper suddenly appeared behind them, looking grim.
Seeing them argue in front of their colleagues, she was even more displeased.
Chloe quickly said, "Harper, you're just in time. They sabotaged my work and ruined my reputation. I was about to secure an exclusive interview with Haley, a promising newcomer. If I got her interview, it would bring us great benefits, but..."
"Enough!" Harper cut her off, glaring at Chloe.
Chloe tried to stay calm but felt panicked. "Harper, I'm telling the truth."
"Do you know what you're doing?" Harper asked. "Haley's reputation is terrible right now. Her actions have caused public outrage. She might even get blacklisted. And you're still talking about this. Those false reports were published by you, right? You've jeopardized Horizon Network's reputation for personal gain. Do you know how serious the consequences are?"
Chloe's face turned pale. "No, it's not true. It's all their fault..."
"You still don't repent!" Harper said coldly. "Because of you, I got scolded by the station manager, who said my department harbored a traitor! If Pearl and Emma hadn't exposed Haley's misdeeds in the name of Horizon Network, and if another station had uncovered her actions, the consequences would have been very severe. Are you trying to ruin the entire Horizon Network?"
Chloe's legs went weak with fear. "Harper, I didn't. I was doing it for Horizon Network. I wanted to catch breaking news and get high ratings!"
Harper, thoroughly disappointed, said coldly, "You're fired!"
Chloe's eyes widened in disbelief. She was the most capable person at Horizon Network.
She grabbed Harper's hand and pleaded, "Harper, I can't be fired. Even if I made a mistake, I've contributed to the station before. I have those previous reports! I won't do it again. Please don't fire me!"
Harper let her hold her hand, her gaze still cold. "I already gave you a chance. This time, it's not my decision. The station manager specifically said they don't need you anymore. You've violated professional ethics. If I keep you at Horizon Network, how can I explain it to the audience? Pack your things and leave!"
She pulled Chloe's hand away.
Chloe never thought she would end up like this.
She used to be in the limelight. How did she suddenly fall into hell?
Chloe couldn't accept such a fate. She continued to plead, "Harper, don't fire me. I'll change. I won't do it again. Please give me another chance. I promise I'll change. I'm begging you!"
Harper no longer looked at her and called out, "Security, take her away!"
Security guards came in, dragged Chloe out, and cleared her belongings.
"Harper!" Chloe was still struggling, unwilling to leave.
But no matter how much she cried and made a scene, it was useless.
She shifted her gaze to Pearl, filled with resentment, glaring at her and saying, "It's all because of you, scheming against me behind my back. I won't let you off, I will definitely not let you off!"
